DF General Discussion / Re: Terrified to try DF!
« on: September 16, 2012, 12:13:23 pm »
That fear about losing work is your only weakness.  It's a learning experience.   After you finally nail the basics, everything else will eventually go tits up.  Then you will start to realize just how inefficient it is.  Then you will learn how to effectively initiate multiple industries, a military, and elegant layout simultaneously while besieged by goblins.

I've never actually encountered obsidian, even around the magma sea...

So I'm jealous.

Hi everyone. Someone linked me to look at this study and I, having nothing better to do, typesetted it in LaTeX. Then someone suggested me to show this to the author, so here it is!.

(I also did the last one by OP) I like your style, keep it up!

Hahaha!  Journal should be !!SCIENCE!!

Oh dear-  I had about 100 migrants in three seasons which choked my fort before I could get my dining/housing complex dug.  Dormed everyone, and they turned the tiny dining hall into a straight up mosh pit.  When I flipped open the social tab- holy crap!

Try establishing a meeting hall from the dining room menu.

I have not extensively used burrows beyond the alert system.  However, an alert burrow is simply a standard burrow that everyone goes in based on alert status.

I was quite annoyed to see my brave citizens, usually legendary something or others, go run for the map edge as soon as the alert goes up.  After being burrowed for a while, I tend to see everything normal.  Since alert burrows are the same thing as regular, I wonder if this isn't what you are seeing.

Once I establish a dining hall, I only seldomly see dwarves houtside.  What kind of meeting area are you establishing?

I think what andrea is hinting at here is that you must actually assign dwarves to the burrow.  The alert system allows you to put all dwarves in a specific burrow to which they do or do not belong.  The burrow system requires one to specifically add the dwarves to the burrow before they respect it.

Who is  to say we weren't all already brainwashed by Peter Molyneux?
Is dwarf fortress not simply an artifact level dungeon keeper, in which dungeon keeper is but of the most basic level?

DF General Discussion / Re: Question about training weapons.
« on: September 14, 2012, 03:30:40 am »
Once you train to level three or so, steel axes just do wonders against nude goblins.

I put training axes on them and a couple goblins can take a quartet of recruits quite a while to beat to death with training equipment.

Quite fruitful.  Just put those recruits in full kit-  they have. Lost teeth to these sessions, which made me unhappy.

I think the trade depot is a great spot to consider.  I finally devised a method of air locking the depot, and wanted to set up essentially a customs office.  Trade goods go into piles from the depot, then out to the stockpile level.  Won't work, but I can figure something out.

It won't show if they are wearing it at the present time, but hit m, e, and look for the green checks.  That will tell you if it is at least assigned.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help with burrow?
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:01:20 am »
You only use alerts to send dwarves to a burrow they aren't normally in.  I think that's the bit you are missing.

Note:  an easy trick is to burrow the children in the alert burrow :). They won't go running out of the city gates as soon as you activate the alert anymore!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help me start a war
« on: September 13, 2012, 11:01:33 pm »
My current fort went on for years without a peep.

It was quiet.  Too quiet.  All these preparations for what, some vultures?

Then BAM.  Four sieges in less than 2 years.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And the elves are pissed i tried to give them wood (apparently)
(thats a strange sentence)
and the human diplomat ended up in a bodybag after running headlong into a goblin siege...

edit:
yep.  War with the humans now.  Weeee!  What's this?  Copper mauls and a helmet?  WAAAAAAAGH!!!

DF Suggestions / Re: Literature, libraries, and papermakers.

I understand your affinity for books, but players in DF burn whatever they feel like.  Magma appears to be the solution to every problem, problem being real or perceived.  Goblin explosion?  Magma.  Too many cats?  Magma.  All the cats are adopted by dwarves?  Burn the dwarves in magma.  Dwarf can't find enough silk cloth and goes crazy from his mood?  Magma.  Dwarf uses all the adamantine to make an earring?  Magma.  Too many children?  Burrow them and flood the room with magma.  This is a community that has figured out how drop children into pits with rabid dogs for 10 years until they come out at the end of it legendary in every military skill, provided they don't go insane first.

If children aren't even implemented in a way that won't end up getting them burnt in magma.  I assure you, there is no way to implement books without someone deciding to use magma to make it "work" differently.   :D

And this is why I love this game!  All I want is for bibliophiles to run the school out of the library, making it (possibly) less desirable to burn the children, or the bibliophiles, in magma.  I don't see how we got off on this tangent anyway, exactly.

Standing orders, o button.

Hit r

The default seems to be ignore refuse outside.  When I told the, to pick it up, more skulls than I'd seen this side of morrowwind appeared all over my piles.

This is also where you can set it so they dump the corpses you assigned for dumping.
