DF Gameplay Questions / no migrants

Got a decent fort up-and-running. had a dwarven caravan and an elven one come to trade at the depot. world history was short i think, or whichever one results in 125 years of history. the first year has now passed and it's just turned spring. i've yet to see any migrants but i like how this fort has gone so i'm reluctant to abandon it, if i wait it out is there a chance of migrants or should i abandon it?

DF Modding / Which raw file do I edit?

I'm aware this is probably covered elsewhere but i could only find topics about when to generate a new world. if I want to add new raws that will be in my games then do I edit the DF>raw>objects files or the DF>data>save>region>objects files. I want the added stuff to be in all of my subsequent games.

DF Gameplay Questions / adventurer mode stats

ive never really played adventure mode but i thought id give it a try seeing as it generates such epic tales, so i have a few questions:
1.what are good starting stats, i usually go demigod and max out strength, agility, toughness and recuperation while erasing all the useless ones. I would also like advice on which skills i should take:/
2. whenever im questing, i usually lose a companion to rovers and brooks, i take novice swimmer so i can cross, but my companions just follow and flounder in the water.
3. i know this game is hard but its kind of strange how every quest i get, i am insantly headshotted or some such upon arrival:L

I decided to write a short fictional story just to pass the time and develop my literary skills, its not finished or very good for that matter but i guess someone might read it. Also being fictional, there are a lot of liberties taken because i wrote it on the spot.

DF Gameplay Questions / how deep is the map? (40d)

I was playing 40d and when mining i realised that the map stopped at z-level sixteen, does the map normally end around this level? could someone plese clear this up?

i recently started playing the 23a for a change as the current version had gotten boring:/ 23a seems to be much harder and the wiki has little advice on how to play, the only tutorials that come up on a search are for the current version. Could anyone suggest a practical 23a tutorial/ guide?

DF General Discussion / The Hobbit Similarities

I just had the following idea after seeing the new `The Hobbit` movie, The movie shares various similarities to an event that not only could but probably has happened in dwarf fortress: A fortress prospers, enjoying wealth and a plethora of valuable minerals. A dragon/titan comes and lays waste to the settlement. Later, an adventurer and his companions journey to the abandoned fortress to retake the forgotten treasures. When they reclaim it, the adventurers are seiged by goblins.
I didnt quite know where and how to voice these thoughts but i just found it interesting how all of these things can happen in-game and are quite common (if not in that order) SO, anyone had the same idea or had this happen to them?
Thoughts?

DF Modding / DF in python?

I have just got interested in coding and after a few google searches i have deduced that the easiest language to start with would be python and my ability in said language is wanting to say the least, when my ability improves im hoping to be able to make at least simple rogue-likes and similar projects. but i understand toady uses C++ and was wondering would python be able to create something at all like DF?

Im trying to make a civ of creatures that basically just attack and seige everyone.they come at population 50 and wealth 25000 but arent very hard to kill. im not too experienced at modding so could anyone tell me what the outcome of these raws would be eg; have i completed my goals?

So... if im right in thinking that the raws are DF`s code, great! If im not could someone please tell me where it is ( im terrible with modding/coding :P) and if possible how many lines of code are there all together in DF?
