DF Gameplay Questions / 23a military question

im playing the old version 23a and after a good few hours of messing with the military screen figured out how to group and arm my dorfs but when i go to the squads screen i only see the station option, how do you issue attack orders?   
PS: Could anyone tell me what the writing above your username means eg; bay watcher; escaped lunatic?

I recently downloaded and have started playing version 23a but found it is a largely different game and was wondering if anyone new where i could find a good 23a tutorial?

Hi, im relatively new to DF and this forum but i just wanted to know what "23a" and "40d" mean exactly.And also the main difference between the 2d and 3d versions (aside from the obvious).
