DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 23a tutorials?
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:24:17 am »
23a seems to be much harder
The main point of playing it, in my opinion. :)

the wiki has little advice on how to play, the only tutorials that come up on a search are for the current version.
There won't be any tutorials, but there should be a Quickstart Guide for 23a on the wiki; other guides are lacking mainly because they were either lost to time (there was an old 23a-specific wiki years ago, but it disappeared from archive.org) or never existed in the first place.

If there's particular information you need, some folks here may be able to provide it.

Also, if you're playing 23a, you should probably patch your copy to fix some of the more significant bugs in it.
yep, i fancied a challenge even though ive barely got the current version down :-) ive read the quickstart guide, it wasnt much help :/ guess the best way to learn would be by playing (and losing);-) is the patch really worth it? ive played this version before and never encountered/noticed any bugs.

The forum can be annoying at times but at least the members arent the brain dead ten year olds that play the majority of games these days :L i understand what you mean although i was actually trying to find something from last year

DF Gameplay Questions / 23a tutorials?
« on: February 03, 2013, 08:53:45 am »
i recently started playing the 23a for a change as the current version had gotten boring:/ 23a seems to be much harder and the wiki has little advice on how to play, the only tutorials that come up on a search are for the current version. Could anyone suggest a practical 23a tutorial/ guide?

DF General Discussion / Re: The Hobbit Similarities
« on: December 26, 2012, 06:54:21 am »
WaffleEggnog, I for one, agree with you on that point. The dwarves looked most un-dwarvenly, they had normal sized noses, looked quite young and as you have said, they had un-satisfactory beards.

Trif, Name another game that does this.

DF General Discussion / The Hobbit Similarities
« on: December 25, 2012, 04:24:54 pm »
I just had the following idea after seeing the new `The Hobbit` movie, The movie shares various similarities to an event that not only could but probably has happened in dwarf fortress: A fortress prospers, enjoying wealth and a plethora of valuable minerals. A dragon/titan comes and lays waste to the settlement. Later, an adventurer and his companions journey to the abandoned fortress to retake the forgotten treasures. When they reclaim it, the adventurers are seiged by goblins.
I didnt quite know where and how to voice these thoughts but i just found it interesting how all of these things can happen in-game and are quite common (if not in that order) SO, anyone had the same idea or had this happen to them?
Thoughts?

Hate to interrupt this terribly confusing debate but could anyone verify the usefulness of code-academy as a learning resource? :-\

haha, ill try not to. The extent of my skill is making the computer have a clunky, badly coded conversation with you.  8)

Thanks for the great answer but since other languages such as C++ are better for games ,i would like to learn them at some point in my life ,albeit after ive learned python. What i was wondering is : would learnig python make learning other languages after that easier? because the syntax would be different but i guess you would kind of already get how it works. thanks again for the help, learning to program has long been a goal of mine. :)

@Pufferfish
not exactly a spinoff, i just wanted to now if games could be created in python and as i wouldnt really make anything more advanced(or anywhere near as good) as DF.

@MadocComadrin
aah... i didnt really know where a question about coding would go. How would i go about moving this?

DF Modding / DF in python?

I have just got interested in coding and after a few google searches i have deduced that the easiest language to start with would be python and my ability in said language is wanting to say the least, when my ability improves im hoping to be able to make at least simple rogue-likes and similar projects. but i understand toady uses C++ and was wondering would python be able to create something at all like DF?
