DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Little funfact about dead dwarves

Have you gotten duplicated dorfs before, has anyone?
It's possible in adventure mode with the quick travel duplication bug introduced in DF2014 (which may or may not be entirely fixed yet.)

"Just now, I killed me." It was inevitable.
How does that work? Multiple Unit structs referring to the same HistEnt? Or multiple HistEnts?

Well, isn't the feather tree one of the supernatural tree type

EDIT: Just reported my own post to Toady, in an attempt to get this image subsituted into the OP, so people wouldn't have to go to the last page to get the actual image

Intended as eggs, it looks; it isn't a bug:
Code: [Select]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:EGG:EGG_YOLK_TEMPLATE]
  [STATE_COLOR:ALL:GREEN]
  [DISPLAY_COLOR:4:0:1]
*** need to go w/ all egg mats when growths support it
*** template currently implies animal kill

only the main part (with an UPPERBODY attached) will remain loyal to its original faction. Syndromes can also be specified within this tag.

Also that thread where they would thrall werewolves and then bisect them.
Sounds like the main part is the head, since it has the UPPERBODY attached
No.  No it doesnt
This is why we need someone familar with debugging DF (as in with a debugger or DFHack) to make confirmations as to whatever is going on

Sounds like the main part is the head, since it has the UPPERBODY attached. And the soul is apparently linked to the head (which would handle the relations).

The Unit object, the "soul", stores different things than the Item object, the corpse/head/upper body which has been seperated from the soul. One of the things is the relations to factions; it only makes sense for the soul to store them.

I'm not familiar with reanimation to make any assertions about how it operates, but I'd think that it operates by making new Units which use the body part as the main (and only) part.

One is really dead only when all who know him have died.
That's deep, too deep... horrifying screams come from the darkness below!
At least it doesn't raaaaaaaaain down heeeeeeeeere!
Oh my. It was inevitable.

I doubt there are many differences wrt being dead now compared to .34, so someone like UristDaVinci might have some hard Science on it.

I disagree that the upper body handles factions, etc. because those are part of the soul. Maybe looking at that other thread as a guide, resurrect a body amputee and check the things the upper body is supposably responsible for.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Diagnostician refuses to work
« on: October 25, 2014, 02:07:28 am »

Edit: seems like they were just dragging their feet. Yes, it can get _quite_ annoying how long it takes. Anyway, diagnoser skill only affects the time spent, dabblers diagnose as accurately as skilled ones.

I guess Toady changed that ever since the days he had that dabbling diagnoser wind up taking a dwarf's lungs out trying to fix a finger cut? Cause he was testing the effects of skill levels on diagnosis when that happened.

Wasn't Toady who tested that:
welp I just did a bit of testing
A 0 skill medic with diagnose turned on, who barely cared for others with no empathy just diagnosed a patient with rotten lungs (for a small cut on thier arm) and then removed both lungs.  He did not survive the operation.  It seems that skill-less diagnoses can give false results.

Not sure it's as depraved as the childcare thread, or the one where people tried to get rid of dorf bodyfat, but thanks, shame there isn't an easy way to do it without dfhack, but yeah, I'm still hoping the skeleton will reanimate (I notice that the switch to ghostly miner removed the normal nish listing in the dead/missing, and switching to being alive removed the ghostly one again) so I can order her to kill herself, in a sense.

I suspect the skeleton is flagged as 'alive' after a fashion since the soul it belongs to is alive. It may not be able to come back as long as there's a living copy.
Extremely unlikely, since severed limbs can reanimate, and there is little difference between a corpse and a severed limb.

115
My understanding of this that the creature's soul is the creature, and the corpse is treated by the game basically like a severed limb: a completely separate object from the creature itself.
That would be correct, except the object has a reference to the creature, I believe only used for thoughts (of other dwarves), for checking burial, and for displaying the owner's name. Objects and creatures are completly different things in the engine, and are not interchangable.

116
Can you then use DFusion to resurrect the skeleton, and have two of the same dwarf? Could you then kill one again and clone him again, to produce infinite Urists? I need to do some research...

*Baffler looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

Given that Toady made a beeline towards fixing historical figuring duping glitches after 0.40 was released, I feel as if that could potentially destroy your save

Uhhh, didn't I just say...
What if he resurrects as a ghost and starts talking to himself?
Impossible, the ghost unit would be the same as the nonghost unit.

I believe that everything on the (u)nits screen (including dead) is counted as an individual loaded unit. The resurrection was preformed by modifying the status of the ghost so it wasn't a ghost.
...yeah, I did.

All I'm hearing is "minecart centrifuges fed with pitchblende heated by magma" and imagining how horrifyingly wrong it could all go.
Why does it have to go wrong? Doing it RIGHT would get horrifying results...
But that would be wrong

Billon is incredibly useful.

Billion and Billion of zinc.

Then mod something else that's useless, like zinc. Oh wait...
Nickel silver?

There is a different message for if no migrants decide to visit your fortress that season.
