DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

...and so, Rocksiege got besieged by a wereelk, just as migrants arrived.  Things did not pan out too well.  The wereelk has claimed two of my dwarves, smashed the wagon (no huge loss), and bashed the trade depot.  I pray I won't lose my elven caravan due to the wereelk.  Job orders for mechanisms and wooden cages are going to be set posthaste to cage this fugitive wereelk.

On brighter news, the first cave layer was hit, and setup for operation magma scoop is underway.

The Undead walk!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, i am a coward... :D

Presumin' they were appropriately armed, I don't think you'd be any less of a coward than I would be.  If only there was a chamber to drop the undead in and cremate them for good measure...

Also started a new fort with goblin and elven neighbors (Never could find a site with all the races without meeting an accursed aquifer), and looking at the industries available, I may be glassworking like crazy in the near future, especially if I can ready a reliable means to minecart magma up to my fort for magma forges.

I haven't technically breached the caves yet; and I only just hit 50 Dorfs in the last migrant wave. And then I get an Univited Guest; who; with nothing better to do; goes after the local Trogodites...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, provided this thing dosen't make it; I'll proboly open up the caves and reap the meats. I got my bridges and traps in place, and my military is... coming.

Also; I found Hematite. Considering my large reserves of Chalk this means one thing: For the first time ever; I can make Steel.

Well, I commend you on being able to develop steel!  Normally, I find myself having problems with the flux stone, and not the iron ore.  (I usually get good iron supply, but not flux stone.)

As for the fortress of Spikebodice, finally getting to dumping the goblin corpses for cremation!  Also, the test troglodyte tested out the platinum 9-fall trap, and to say the least, some individual goblins were naturally with a split mind on this.  (Long story short:  Troggy went splat.)  Time to empty the cages of unwanted stuff!  (Still gonna keep a goblin, troll, and troglodyte for the zoo room.)

I was thinking, as far as you have breedable animals and plump helmets you can live underground forever.

Can't forget about the source of cloth!

In any case, my fortress also had a run-in with a forgotten beast made of ash.  Also luckily, it had nothing going for it.  (Cue one stab in center mass, and the beast becoming a pile of ash.)

Well, perhaps, a tame recipe'll do?  Ingredients include a nautilus, some apples, and a little onion.  (Why am I imagining the nautilus with its minced head wearing the minced apple as a makeshift beard?)

The first siege of the fort of Spikebodice has been had by the goblins who roughly sent ten of them.  They were met with the dwarves, and succinctly, the goblins were crushed and captured.  Unfortunately, with one of my military dwarves suffering their neck getting smashed to an unrecognizable state, I suspect the battle won't be without cost, given how the dwarf is unable to breathe.  (Writing this siege fight off as Dwarves 10, and goblins 2.  Wished it'd be goblins 0, but I was in copper armor, and the goblins were savvy enough to not just march right into the cage traps with everyone and be conveniently caught like that.)

But seriously, how do you draw different kinds of minced meat and expect the others to recognize them?

In addition, could also try to give the meat a different "texture" if that makes sense.  I know fish looks quite rather different compared to steak.  Also as mentioned by Minty, color is another good way to go about it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: June 20, 2015, 04:08:31 pm »
Kinda had a near-idiot moment what with my ocean desalination for dwarven drinking project with one of my screw pumps being suspended from development.  Got that sorted in time, fortunately.  I then realized my other water reservoir (for the prisoners, doubling as "Oh crap, I'm outta hospital water somehow!" water) would not get water due to not channeling to let the screw pump collect the water.

I know this is a thread for face palms, but that was one moment I had considered a candidate for face palming.

Well, to say the least, another artifact, and this time, a fey mood!  In the end, I had a kaolinite mechanism which nods to the making of Spikebodice, the fort I'm playing.  Kinda wished it wasn't kaolinite used to make the mechanism though.

Nonetheless, getting the military set up, as I suspect the goblins will attack soon enough, and it'd also be nice to have a means to fight back the goblin menace, as well as any cave critters.  (Kinda don't want more permanent retirees).

At Spikebodice, I had two possessions occur, and both ended with an artifact (A chalk weapon rack with kaolinite, and a chalk figurine of dwarves founding the fort).  So far, the common theme, aside from primary chalk use is their mention of a slab in imagery.  Also, the elves arrived, and they pulled a severe disappointment.  I bought out what little they had to offer (namely apples and fruit), and gave them two crowns.  Elves, if ye don't improve your wares, I might consider going to combat with you, especially if no goblins attack.

Well, I can definitely see this was one of the more interesting worlds I've seen.  Not often do I see worlds generate into some fine shape like this.

HFS automatically knows any valid path to your dining hall, I believe.  That's part of why they murder FPS (or at least, did in previous versions) if you try to wall them off, as they are constantly flood-filling HFS to try to find a path to your dining hall.

Huh...  I thought the demons pathed for the surface.  Guess that shows what I know...  though, thinking on it, if the demons don't have a dining hall to path to, what would they do in that case?  Just mill about?

I have prepared to go to a new fort on a new world, where I'll be meeting with all civilizations (Which are elves, humans, dwarves, and of course, the goblins).

The surroundings are temperate, yet heavily forested, with some very deep soil, and only one aquifer tile in the lower left corner of the entire map (The ocean).

Not sure if I should stick with the typical surface castle design I usually did with my forts, or if it's high time to do a new fort design.

DF General Discussion / Re: Shameful admissions..
« on: June 13, 2015, 12:00:19 am »
I... I've... I've.... *Cries uncontrollably* I'VE NEVER PIERCED AN AQUIFER!!!

Ye got my sympathies here, Stagnant.  I've only pierced an aquifer once, and it was due to magma helping on that case.

Aside from the magma piercing, I've not succeeded in beatin' the vile aquifer.

As for personal shameful admissions, I am a mite ashamed that I didn't get to combat elves, but the one thing I lately can't live down?  Managing an archer squad.  Every time I try to make them shoot, they merely ignore the fact and treat the crossbows as bludgeons.

Also of note is my extreme incompetence in adventurer mode (in general).

For my fort's going-ons, I am currently at work on making the fort prepared to take on some heavy denizens of the deep, as well as getting the ceramics industry going.
