DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: kobold diplomat for the elves
« on: June 06, 2015, 10:02:53 am »
Wait... a kobold talking intelligently ?
I was about to say just that. Kobolds don't have a language.

...But they can learn language? It is possible to civilize Kobolds?!!! Oh god... Civilized Kobolds...

Wha?  I know kobolds have a tendency to steal a couple samples from others and can be vicious, but I see them as a bit of a cute little fellow species.  The whole thought of a kobold as diplomat for the elves is actually quite neat in my eyes.  I wonder if this lovable little kobold's got an interesting history that got the position of diplomat...

Update on the fort of Earthdwellings:

The dwarves came, but not yet ready for the baron yet...  Rats!

Also, the obsidian processor is fully functional!

Lastly, got an artifact steel axe from a strange mood.  Rather happy about that one to be honest.

Well, I suppose as of now, my goals that I've completed are kinda small, but I'll spoiler it, due to one of the things not being so small.

Currently building what will be the ogre habitat. A male and female blind cave ogre stumbled into my cage traps a while ago and I've been at a loss as to what to do with them. So I'm sticking them in a big glass box (Clear glass fortifications with Clear glass windows on the outside) for my dorfs to gawk at (or run away from the sight of). Perhaps I'll throw some other amusing critters in there. Like elves...

Oh, but producing clear glass is slow... so slow.

Also, Hi! New to the forums, been playing DF since 40.19. So not very long. :D

I see you've got blind cave ogres.  Not a bad catch.  Sure as heck beats troglodytes.

I am also with ya on the clear glass production being slow as heck.

Also, welcome to the forums!

As for the fort, the obsidian processor is nearing completion.  Got the magma from the magma sea ready for pumping, the water from the second cave layer ready, and four drawbridges that retract the deluge of water upon the magma for some great obsidian.  Not sure if my obsidian processor should have windows though...  A part of me wants to do it for the awesomeness of having dwarves see obsidianization firsthand, but on the other hand, I would need pearlash for clear glass viewing.  (I doubt anyone wants to see a cool process in green color.)

According to the engravings in my fort, one crundle killed an entire tribe of olm men on its own. This is both hilarious and terrifying.

Now that is a tough lil' crundle.  Mercifully, cage traps will stop the little devils.

Well, with Earthdwellings, got a bunch of migrants (two more peasants being made into miners!), and am starting to plan out how I'm going to get the wonderfully lightweight, yet deadly metal near the magma sea.  (Let's just say my figurative "testing stick" is an engraver and leave it at that.)

Also, the elves arrived, and supplied me with some giant animals, namely a giant dingo, a breeding pair of giant flying squirrels, and a female giant sparrow.  (If only I could name stray animals...)

Mod Releases / Re: My Little Fortress - 2014 (DF 0.40.19)

Ah, Talia...  A few things of which I'd recommend:

  • Consider some additional points to surface crops.
  • For some of the workshops, you'll need the alchemy labor.  (Library studies, along with some of the workshops you can build).
  • Once a sawmill is up, use the saw mill to make wood blocks, not the carpenter's shop.  (Six blocks for a log at the saw mill, against the one block from one log from carpenter's shop.)
  • If you plan on fortress walls on the surface, consider a dome instead.
  • Earth ponies actually make good miners.

Hope those couple of pointers help out.  I do also recommend embarking somewhere with soil, that way, you can channel down one Z-level to have farm plots uninhibited by stone pebbles, boulders, and patches of stone.  A depot also could be recommended early.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Workshop Quantity Curiosity
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:49:10 am »
So, I've been a tad curious in terms of fortress design, but in terms of workshops, I am curious as to how many instances of a particular workshop you would consider.

For myself, I generally have three of a workshop except for the following:

I do wonder what you folks work with in terms of workshops.

As for the fort of mine, I can safely say the nobles' quarters (AKA the Noble Hand-Grenade) is completed, although my fortress is suffering issues with running outta fuel, and as much as I'd like to bring the magma up to my fort, I had an FPS mangling through pump stacks, and even then, can't exactly get by water too easily.  Wondering how many wood burning workshops I'll need before I can reliably produce fuel for five smelters, three forges, five glass workshops, and five kilns...  (Not that I'm using the kilns for much aside from making pearlash, but I think I'm with too little fuel power.)

Maybe a magma forge down deep isn't the worst idea I've had...

Well, I thought I'd show you a little something I've made in my current fort, and though it's only one Z-level, I still think it's artistic enough for posting's sake.

Behold, the noble hand-grenade!  (No points for what I referenced.)

Left rooms (in gold) for the baron, the Captain of the guard gets the green glass areas, the Mayor gets the wooden furniture, and for the monarch, that part on the right with all the platinum furniture (and artifact iron bed).

I dare say I made some good use of my precious metals and glass for the nobles when they do come about.

I have yet to conquer the hidden fun stuff, unfortunately.  All attempts have ended poorly either by unleashing them, or something else coming along to ruin me (I'm looking at you, deadly dust forgotten beings...)

I also have yet to conquer aquifiers that go more than two z-levels.  (Only did beat a one-layer aquifer through the almighty magma.)

Lastly, I have yet to survive at all on a tundra or evil biome.  (All attempts on evil biome have ended with death by skeletal yak.  I dare say yaks are my least favorite animal due to this game.)

As of the time being, the fort's going along fairly well, though unfortunately, my coal supply ran out, and am now relying on charcoal for a good year or so.  Preparing for the baron and king has gone underway with gold and platinum for their rooms (Gold for the baron and platinum for the monarch, if ya wonder.  Also had a little chamber before the king's throne to be fitted with glass statues and windows).

Still trying to drain the underground lakes unfortunately, and with not much success on the second cave's underground lake.  Not sure if the edges puke out water like no tomorrow...  If so, then I might have a slight altercation to my obsidian fabricator system involving 4 drawbridges, a glass screw pump and 3 z-levels.

Also baffled at the lack of siege.  At this rate, I may very well tussle with the elves to show those pointy-eared folks the true power of steel and its effects on the fair folk themselves!

To the military of earthdwellings:

I only told you to go after the giant toad that caused the indirect death of one of the miners.  Not the cave crocodile as well!  Due to your drunken dopey actions, we lost an axeman to the water as well.

The remaining miners will be ordered to dig a way to drain this pool of water immediately.  I can safely say due to your incompetence, I've been moved enough to impose a drain project on a cavern lake.

I do plan to have the other subterranean lakes of water to be drained too.

Thy stressed overseer,

Apparently this pump operator is cracking jokes while she works.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll admit, that pump operator has a good sense of humor.  Wonder if crundle are the food of choice for forgotten beasts, but that mention kinda made me smile a fair bit.

On another note, with my fort, working on an orthoclase road, as I have hit two layers of caves and the magma sea.  Also of note, is my hope of making things happen with finishing the fortress walls that are 4 z-levels tall (and made o' stone blocks to boot.  I'd like to see those goblins try to climb that).

Yes yes ohmigodyes my armourer got a strange mood my first combat artifact!!!!!

*Hyperventilates quietly*
The great thing about an armor mood is getting a legendary armorer out of it.
Provided the dwarf was not possessed that is.  (Unfortunately, that is the one exception.)

As for fortress things going on, kinda suffering a cloth shortage, and hoping to fix that with some pig tails in the autumn caravan.
