Creative Projects / Player Character Theme Song Request!
« on: December 09, 2015, 09:02:33 pm »
Suppose that you'd like to create a character for a tabletop roleplaying game. Suppose that you want to give that character a theme song of some kind. Suppose you have no idea what song would be appropriate.

This thread is to solve that problem. Post requests and suggestions!

I'll start us out.

He's a German psychologist. He has darkness/shadow related powers. He is actually a nice guy, really. It's a little surprising. Oh, and he's seen shit. He's seen the sort of thing that makes you question your sanity. He is, it is true, starkly sane, but he knows full well that the most demented madmen think that they too are sane. Any ideas?

EDIT: Picked it: "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.

Why, oh why, do unarmed civilians flee screaming from raccoons and yet gleefully swarm a forgotten beast?

DF Gameplay Questions / Difference between Worship and Worship?
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:24:29 am »
Some dwarves will worship with the Worship. Other dwarves get Worship!. What's the difference?

One Vampire I sealed in the wall seems to be especially unhappy and he's been Worship!ing for a few months now.

Other Games / Happy 10th Birthday, Stumpy Wumples!
« on: November 24, 2015, 11:46:51 pm »
Stumpy-wumples

November, 2005: A gaming titan is unleashed upon the world.

Neopets: The Darkest Faerie

Additionally, No More Stumpy-Wumples became available. Although it is a sub-game, it is definitely not about submarines. Some time this month, No More Stumpy-Wumples turns ten years old, proving once and for all that you are an unmitigated fossil. The young people play their music too loud, and in your day, there were only (x) Pokemon. Alternatively, I was stumping wumples when you were hardly a gleam in your daddy's eye.

Share your decade of Stumpy-Wumples experience here!

Age of Wonders 3 has dwarves. Dwarf Fortress has wonders. The parallels need no further explanation.

Let's put together a PBEM game! Who's interested?

Game type:
Whatever works well with lots of players? Alliances and betrayals?

Restrictions:
Ah, Dwarf Fortress Esque civs only? Perhaps. All Dwarves? On the other hand, a pretty standard game works just fine for me.

Big Pharma is a business and logistics sim which teaches you that the important thing about the pharmaceuticals industry is that it isn't about pharmaceuticals.

It plays fast and loose with actual medicine, but that's OK, because what it's really about is the logistics of the factory floor, balancing the spending on research with your income, and deciding when you can afford to make powerful, side-effect-free cures, and when you can get away with selling blood thinner that also causes nightmares, anxiety, and skin rashes.

If you're looking for a good free-form puzzler/logistics/business game, this is your best option. If you'd like a complimentary game for your 18-year-old Theme Hospital save, you can't do much better. If you're looking for a detailed simulation of the actual operations of a pharmaceutical company... this is not exactly what you want. Nonetheless I think there is a lot of overlap between the fortress-building DF player and the production-line-tweaking Big Pharma CEO. Check it out!

Either that or basically anything by Client Liaison.

I mean, it's so obvious I expect it's already been done, but if not, I think I'll have to do it myself.

Cities: Skylines is the twitter-obsessed successor to Sim City. Let's use our practiced oversight to operate our municipal transit systems almost as efficiently as our goblin macerators!

Each player gets two years, then puts the save up on Steam. No rules as to what you do to the city, although if you intentionally destroy it we might roll back. Or maybe not.

As for the configuration:
-No user mods (later games might have them).
-Hard mode.
-No save scumming. You get one attempt at your two-year election cycle. Good or bad, you're stuck with it.
-Recreational chemicals recommended, but not mandatory.
-End-of-turn summaries recommended, but not mandatory.

Sound good? Who's playing?

Creative Projects / What do some RPG Nazis want?
« on: March 06, 2015, 10:18:19 pm »
So I'm GMing a mini-campaign with a misfit platoon of MI-5 B5(b) infiltrators stopping Nazi Ahnenerbe Goons from achieving some dastardly goal of... something.

I want to put them in some forgotten underground city in eastern Turkey, in the coastal mountains along the Black Sea. Part of the campaign in forest, part along the river, and partly on bare rock and narrow goat-trails should give us a nice wasteland feeling. The fact that they're in a neutral nation means neither side can call down artillery strikes; they've got to do this the old-fashioned way.

The PC platoon is three squads and only the lightest support; maybe 30, 35 men. (And women. About 10 of the "men" are women who joined up in some other division and were too good at killing people to drum out. A lot of this campaign is like that...) The PCs are seven oddballs including the Lieutenant in charge of the platoon and squad A and the two PCs in charge of the B and C squads. Everyone else is an NPC.

They'll encounter a larger force of substantially inferior nazi goons.

My question remains: What are the Nazis up to? It has to be impressive but not the Arc of the Covenant, C'thulhu, or anything else too overplayed.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Useless Software Tool: Ping the Planet.bat
« on: January 22, 2015, 03:39:13 am »
In a fit of pointless invention, I've assembled a windows batch file that pings every ip4 address on the internet.

On my computer and network connection, it will take two years to complete, but I suppose that by running a hundred simultaneous copies with specified ranges will cut it down to a long week.

I can't think of any legitimate or illegitimate use for this thing. Have fun.

Diplomacy is a classical board-game set in 1900 Europe and moving forward six months at a time. The basic rules are simple, but like chess, they build a complex web of strategy.

You can play it in person or over the internet on several websites.

Right now, I'm joining a large game on vDiplomacy. Anyone is welcome to join here, regardless of if you're an old hand or a totally new player.

For old and new, here's an illuminating introduction to the game with some discussion of the strategy thereof.

Play With Your Buddies / Kerbal SCIENCE Program (v0.22)
« on: October 17, 2013, 12:52:41 pm »
We're playing Kerbal Space Program Career Mode!

The way it works is, launch 1 mission. This can be to drive around on a rover, to land something on the Mun, or whatever you like.

Once you're done, if you have enough science points in the bank, you can buy one technology. Then, you zip the save up and put 'er on Kerbal Space Port.

Rules of thumb:
- Don't worry too much about Science- just think about how to achieve a goal with the tech you have.
- Don't damage other people's accomplishments without permission (knocking over flags or blowing up space stations).
- Use reverts and quicksaves sparingly.
- If your mission fails, go ahead and pass the save on! No landing legs? Out of fuel on the Mun? Jeb re-entered terminally? Oh well!
- If someone elses' mission didn't make it, consider helping them out!

Mission 1 Complete!

Curses / Extremely Liberal Crime Squad
« on: May 17, 2013, 11:35:14 am »
I was cleaning up my desktop and found some old notes for a LCS mod I intended to make one day. The idea was that if you got public opinion high enough, you could upgrade L+ social positions to L++ positions, which would generally have strange effects. Exactly what they might be, I don't know.

I also wanted to add Computer Rights as a social position. Hacking might scare some people into cracking down on it, but if you keep a good public face, you could eventually make it impossible to (legally) punish your hackers!

I particularly like the Death Penalty modification, because it'd be hilarious trying to "upgrade" someone from a vandalism charge to several counts of murder so that, instead of going to jail, he's set free.

I'm not going to be working on this, so go for it if you're interested.

Abortion Rights      Abortions are mandatory
Animal Rights      There are major welfare programs for wild animals
Police Regulation      The police have been outlawed, and outlaws are police
Privacy Rights      People are carefully monitored to make sure they don't infringe on the privacy of others.
Death Penalty      The death penalty- alone- has been replaced with amnesty.
Nuclear Power      Nuclear power plants are being converted to playgrounds
Pollution         Cars are banned.
Labor Laws         The minimum wage is $100/hour.
Gay Rights         Straight people are second-class citizens
Corporate Law      Corporations are outlawed
Free Speech      Every 30 minutes, someone has to yell "fire" in every crowded theater.
Flag Burning      Flags are a major source of fuel
Gun Control         All guns have been confiscated
Tax Structure      The tax rate is 100%. (Only illegal income produces money)
Women's Rights      Men are second-class citizens
Civil Rights         White slavery- alone- is legal.
Drug Law         There is LSD in the water supply
Immigration         Spanish is now the official language of the US
Election Reform      It is illegal for conservatives to run for office. Not that they don't...
Military Spending      The U.S. Military has been disbanded, causing an immediate occupation by canadian troops.
Human Rights      ???

Computer Rights
Computers are banned for civilian use.
   Computer use is tightly regulated.
crime on the internet is restricted.
   Internet free speech is protected.
There are few restrictions on computer use.
There ARE no laws on the Internet!
   Computers are citizens!
