The news media is helping Trump by airing his propaganda piece.

The guy who said that the press is "the enemy of the people."

What the fuck is even going on anymore?

despite what Internet activists on both extremes of our present ideological spectrum would have you believe.

Hey, real quick, what are those two extremes? Like, the specific policy goals?

The answer is because their power had grown to point where they decided it was time to run a test of public opinion. Their test seemed to have succeeded, which is a green light for them to push further. As we grow more and more complacent to their dominance, they'll begin to use cruder and cruder methods on more and more important figures, until we end up in a dystopian society without even realizing it.

What are you recommending? Or are you just focus-grouping a new Young Adult novel?

Speaking of focus-grouping...

Constitutional Amendment: The US may only exercise force of any kind if granted a specific 4-year mission to do so by popular vote. The proposal is given thusly: "Shall the US be allowed to deploy troops and weapons to Trinidad and Tobago, Monaco, and Liechtenstein from 2021 to 2025; and shall the US increase taxes by 0.04%?" No further context may be provided in the voting booth, although the government may make a public case leading up to the election. The US may ask to extend the mission (refreshing the 4-year duration) once per year in November, but the initial vote to establish the mission can be an emergency vote. The measure is tied to mandatory "war tax." Non-votes are considered "no" votes. The non-voting population also automatically votes "no."

The USA always has permission to operate defensively within National waters and its own territories, including within 3 miles of a US border (horizon distance), but may not change its territorial claims without declaring a mission (no deciding that Mexico is basically US territory). All animals, personnel, and devices that are equipped with weaponry, as well as all projectiles and any energy effects, are included. A national guard platoon carrying fruit baskets doesn't count; a dog with a gun in its mouth counts. A bullet, laser, or catapult projectile can strike anywhere within the specified areas, but not outside the area, by this provision. All other rules of war apply.

The war tax is an additional tax assessed after all other taxes. For every 1000 square miles of active mission area, Americans must pay 0.02% higher taxes. For example, we're current at war in around 500,000 square miles. Americans would pay 10% more in taxes. I am not a tax lawyer, so those numbers might change, but this feature exists for the specific reason of preventing the workaround of asking Americans to vote for war against "everywhere" every couple of years. (This may be modified to be based on the projected population in the combat area, so that declaring war on Antarctica is cheaper than on Hawaii, but that is for later negotiations)

Failure to comply with this amendment constitutes treason on the part of the commanding officer(s) responsible.

This way, we will never again be in a situation where we wake up involved in a new war, police action, "advisory role," etc. I think this should do it, though guys. I saved America!

Let's keep in mind, Alex Jones did venture into stochastic terrorism. He tried and arguably succeeded in inciting lone wolves to attack his political opponents.

I agree that Youtube has too much power to shape discourse. Nobody competes with Youtube because nobody CAN compete with Youtube. That said, the world is better off with Infowars gone, and would only be better if there was legal action taken against AJ to dismantle his public image.

I dunno, the assumption that wages will rise with inflation is not a safe one.

Was it a problem with the game or the players?

Honestly if Spore just made the cell stage into a full game and sold itself as that, it would have been better.

Most Americans have a huge trade deficit with their grocery store, but they don't panic about that.

But then... what's the point of it all if you're building a wall... and in front of your eyes it disappears?

Now that's a meme I haven't heard in a long time... a long time.

It'd be hilarious if Trump gets impeached loses the election and decides to take his ball and go home by releasing all secret documents.

Got to love the assholes posting screenshots from south park memed up to say "If you didn't want to have a painful extrajudicial execution, you shouldn't have allowed your parents to attempt to do a thing that I think should be illegal (although it is actually legal) in order to flee organized crime verging on open warlordism."

Though I paraphrase slightly.

It's kind of a joke at this point. It's more like, "he can't even do this right," rather than "he did something so awful."

Also look PTTG I'm sorry I don't mean to make this into some personal thing, I just feel very strongly about it. Not trying to attack you for your opinions or beliefs, and obviously your motivation is to save lives I'm not trying to make you out to be the same as Bush or whatnot.

To me I feel like the idea that pulling out WON'T create another ISIS is the fantasy.

I'm willing to put this whole topic aside. I think we agree on much more than we disagree. The only thing I would add is that while pulling out will lead to a power vacuum, and that won't be good, I feel that there never will come a point where we can leave without creating a power vacuum. I exaggerate when I say we should stick it out for a week or two if that's all that's needed... but there is no gameplan that sees the US moving out of middle east within my lifetime. That, at least, cannot go on.

Nonetheless, your arguments are persuasive. Trump's retreat is clearly the product of a deranged mind, and not the sort of measured pullout that all but the most extreme pacifist would recommend.

The reality here isn't making sure the people you like don't get hurt, it's making sure you aren't complicit in another hundred or two dead children via drone strike trying to solve a situation that we could have prevented.

The victory you're chasing will never come. There is no winning this war. Yes, Bush and Obama are responsible for the US' actions there, but the US is not the only adult in the room. We aren't responsible for the things we could have prevented with the benefit of hindsight (to think otherwise is surely absurd, or else the US is responsible for every problem in the world since 1776). By leaving we are ending our contributions to the atrocities, not creating more.

Did I not say we should invite refugees with open arms? Somehow that makes more sense to me than bombing a school bus now in order to get a head start on bombing them ten years down the line.

I agree that, if there was some compelling reason to believe that the war could be won in a week or two, we should continue, but that is simply not the case.

I am insulted by your TLDR. You know as well as I do that fighting the war now is sure to result in more casualties. Leaving might lead to more casualties at some point in the future.

Dunamisdeos, who do you know that you're willing to send to war? Is it yourself? A brother? A father or son? Because unless you have someone who you would happily sacrifice in the name of some interim government, don't talk about the American lives we need to spend to "hold ourselves accountable."

Anyway it's nice to be back to disagreeing with Trump.
