DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Spontaneous Combustion
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:43:55 am »
Came back to Ironwrath today and as soon as I unpause the game a goblin's right foot in my refuse stockpile randomly ignites and begins to burn down my courtyard. Is this a thing, or something that should be added to the bug tracker? I attempted to put the save on DFFD but the folder is 331MB :(

Ah very well, so the dashes mean hostility towards me. Thank you.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Site Finder Clarification Needed

In the site finder when you tab to other sets of information about your site the one that lists nearby civilizations of all races, I notice that goblins usually have a series of red dashes next to them. What is this meant to indicate?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:47:10 am »
Recently came back to the game since I'm laid up with a broken leg / ankle. Lost my old regions and saves so I reinstalled a fresh copy to get back to basics until I get my 'sea-legs' back. Went through the usual first couple of years setting up industries and military when I realized it had been 3-4 years without much FUN. That didn't last long, went down to the first cavern layer and was met at the door by a Giant Cave Spider who proceeded to pwn half my military before being killed. Just as I start cleaning up the mess I get sieged, and a marsh titan!!

Ezung Slonustez Lulodasthu, Marsh Titan

An enormous hairy ribbon worm. It has a broad shell and it has an austere look about it. Beware its fire!

I was expecting the usual fire breath similar to a dragon's, this guy said fuck that and brought fireballs to the party and decimated the gobbos. The fortress was already in a fair amount of danger, I tend not to turtle up during sieges etc. So I send the remnants of my army out to rush the Titan through the wall of smoke from the brush fire. This of course set most of my military on fire pretty much damning the fortress to be destroyed. Then a hero emerged from the smoke and fire a single *Capybara Bone Bolt* striking the Marsh Titan in the body, tearing the muscle and tearing the brain! Needless to say this guy is my new general and I have plans to install him as ruler at my first opportunity. Things definitely took a turn for the best and the game brought me the FUN I forgot about. I think Ironwrath is fairly appropriate for this fortress as well, so far all I have been able to find is Zinc :(

Edit: Titan burned a hippie caravan too :)

General Discussion / Re: Thought Provoking Quote
« on: December 09, 2012, 03:44:19 pm »
I interpreted the quote not to mean would you speed up your current life, ie suicide, to change costumes but would you change the way you live. All of us have to rationalize our decisions against the consequences, if you decided you wanted to be a musician but ended up living on the streets playing for change would you still go down that path? Hence why so many get stuck in the day to day grind of work and fitting into societal norms. But if you knew that if things didn't quite pan out for you would you be more likely to take these risks because at the end of the tunnel is a reset button?

DF Modding / Re: Shizzle 16x20 ASCII - my first tileset!

Just recently came back to the game now that I'm laid up with a broken ankle. Relearning it in ASCII and this looks to be a good middle ground with things a little bit clearer and distinguishable.

General Discussion / Thought Provoking Quote

So I was scrolling thechive.com yesterday, like usual, when I came across this in one of the posts of motivational quotes. Typically these kinds of things make you think for a little bit then you go on about your day without much changing. This one has really stuck with me though, it definitely caught me off guard when I first read it. I have been giving it much thought and figured this would be an interesting place to bring it. I still can't choose an answer to it, I continue to go back and forth. Any thoughts of your own?

DF General Discussion / Re: How did YOU find Dwarf Fortress?
« on: December 06, 2012, 04:05:16 am »
I think I was watching a Terraria let's play on Youtube when the person running it had a guest on who played the game. I had never heard of it before, but the way they talked about how complex it was I just had to see what the fuss was about!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I can't seem to find the difficulty for me

So, taking the advice of 3/3 of the people who gave me advice here, it seems I need to dig deeper.
Have you dug out any adamantine spires yet? Your difficulty is soon to follow.

Automatakittay: I'll definitely move the mechanic up closer to the stone stockpile, there is more than enough room for two masons and a mechanic's shop. The housing I was trying to maximize happy thoughts because my last few fortresses testing designs ended in tantrum spirals.

Oaktree: I've been trying to avoid taking advantage of certain game mechanics hence the lack of a danger room, however quantum stockpiling definitely seems like the way to go.

Megahelmet: Are you saying to make the rooms contain beds and tables instead of being split up the way they are in the hospital currently? Does that also apply to traction benches?

Di: The marksdwarves haven't been a problem as of yet, however they aren't a huge focus of my fledgling military. I've been using them as more of a way to soften up whatever invaders make it to my bridge for the swordsdwarves, I tend not to turtle during attacks. However this fortress has yet to be sieged which may make it necessary to turtle. The one criminal I had was unfortunately beaten to death by the hammerer so I haven't had much experience with the justice system, are the stockpiles necessary to keep the dwarves from dieing? I assumed idlers would bring them food and drink to sustain them. Also what is the purpose of not having barrels in the prepared food stockpile?

There were many good ideas here, I'm trying to adapt them to the constraints of the design. It is pleasing to the eye and works well enough without being too complicated to set up, plus being able to see everything going on is a big bonus for me.

So I have been trying different fortress layouts recently and feel I have finally landed on one that is working well. This layout has been through some trial and error and will support a 80-100 population fortress comfortably. I'm looking for ways I can better increase the efficiency or problems that I may encounter that I just haven't noticed yet. The pictures are in order from highest Z level to lowest, not pictured are my noble level and mining levels.

Has anyone had difficulties downloading the file? My browser will say it is 79.5MB/79.5MB but never complete the download. This has happened for me another time as well.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarves not eating...tantrum spiral

Usually when that happens it's because of a mass remove ramps / up stairs order that wasn't taken off tiles necessary for access.
Probably from my moat, good call.

It's a method to check for pathing issues, since if a part of the map is unreachable, then some stuffs won't be able to be gotten, while the other part of map that get tried out would have different stuff. That's assuming there're stockpiles of buildable stuff on both parts, you get unable to build if there're none.
I was unaware of this, ended up with different results than I expected. Right next to the stockpile is a listing of all materials available to built a crafters workshop, however in my courtyard on the surface it only lists blocks that I have in a stockpile in the courtyard. So there are apparently pathing issues, I have never had to deal with this before, however they seem to be a little backward of what I expected to see.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, the stairwell on the first underground Z level has somehow changed from up/down to a down only. Built some up/down stairs over top of them and things seem to be returning to normal, refuse is now actually being taken outside. Hopefully that is all it was, strange the fort has run for a year and a half fine before this somehow happened.

Try building something right next to the food stockpile and flick through the list of building materials. Does it look like a list of everything in your fortress? Try building something where the dwarves are  hunting vermin. Does that look like a list of everything in your fortress?
I'm unsure of your intentions, are you wanting to know if things are forbidden? I have redesignated stockpiles and that did not help, I notice there are a few dwarves who seem to be in a normal frame of mind, ie they still perform tasks, are not melancholy, and are eating the prepared food that I have. Everyone else seems to have gone catatonic, there are vermin remains everywhere and no one is willing to do anything about it nor will they complete any tasks for which they are the only profession assigned.
