DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack

I figured it out. Apparently renaming the starter pack to 'Dwarf Fortress' confused it to start itself. Naming it back to 'Starter Pack' fixed the problem.

I'm having some trouble with the starter pack. Every time I click on 'play dwarf fortress' it just re-opens the starter pack instead of launching the game.

DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifer Depth?
« on: April 01, 2014, 09:25:14 am »
How many layers does an aquifer go on for? I read somewhere that the worst case scenario is 3 layers and so I attempted the cave in method with three concentric circles and even after blocking off and draining three levels of aquifer the fourth layer held more water.

Cool, thanks for the info!

The Wiki and the Forums are pretty useful and always up to date.

I accidentally turned into a wear panda. Don't laugh, panda's can bite your arm off! Then I trolled all the villagers by doing stuff like this...

DF Gameplay Questions / Hospital steals cloth from Elves!?
« on: October 18, 2013, 03:39:41 pm »
I have an early hospital set up with 2 chests that were full of cloth (5000/5000 or whatever the 'full' value is). Then the Elves came to trade at my Depot. I told my dwarves to bring the crates of crafts and woolen socks they had been preparing and then something really strange happened...

My dwarves came streaming out of the fortress and swarmed the caravan, grabbed cloth, and then pranced giddily down to the hospital and crammed all of the fiber cloth into the chest so that it held 117000/5000 cloth [I don't remember the exact number but it was a ridiculous amount over the max].

I was afraid this behavior would anger the Elves but they didn't seem to notice when I traded with them.

After they left I tried to get the cloth out of the chest and into my stockpile. I undesignated the hospital but that didn't work. I removed the chest and cloth exploded all over the floor, but the dwarves wouldn't touch it. I set it to forbidden and then reclaimed it. Still nothing. Finally I told them to dump the cloth, which they did, and then removed the dump designation and they finally moved it to the stockpile.

So I'm not sure what on earth happened there or how to reproduce it, but I did get a lot of free cloth somehow. Anyone have any idea how this happened?

How do you disarm prisoners?

well, I got them shooting the range, two of them at least. The first problem you have is that you have a total of 4 crossbows, 2 of which are claimed by hunters, so only 2 of your militia have a weapon

I changed their schedule back to training when active, set the squad to a bit of active, then inactive and the two with crossbows ran outside to shoot

I also remember someone finding a workaround other than leaving them inactive for the practise

So, it works pretty fine within the limits of a sometimes very annoying game, but make some more crossbows

Thanks, I'll build some more crossbows and see what happens.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tower Guard?
« on: October 16, 2013, 10:03:08 am »
I tried the 'Guard Burrow' order but my dorfs didn't go into the tower. As far as I can tell that order only means 'attack enemies that enter the burrow' which doesn't necessarily mean 'stay in the tower'.

maybe upload it somewhere (like the DFFD), I'd like to take a look

I was unable to make a DFFD account (wouldn't send confirmation email) but I was able to host the save folder as a .rar on mediafire. If you have time, please take a look so that I can learn why half the squad refuses to pick up quivers or shoot the target.

I simply CAN NOT get them to train. I have read and tried everything listed so far.

My squad has 4 dwarfs in it, 1 militia leader, 1 recruit, 1 marksdwarf, 1 speardwarf. I have no idea why he insists on being a speardwarf, the uniform for the squad is is Archer. Only the militia leader bothers to train with the crossbow, which he does off and on, the others refuse to. They also refuse to pick up the quivers I made for them. Any idea what is going on?

I am having the same problem. I set them to train and one out of the ten shoots five bolts and then goes away and hasn't come back. I set them to unactive and they just sit around doing nothing. Help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help! Animals died in the dining room!
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:43:00 am »
Heck, in my first fortress one of my dwarfs died in the meeting hall and it was only after his ghost started causing problems that I noticed all my dwarves were quite upset by the fully skelified corpse that had been sitting at the dining table for months. *chuckle* that was pretty bad.

Not all of us study the forums thoroughly before we begin playing Dwarf Fortress  :P
