DF Gameplay Questions / Aquifer Depth?

How many layers does an aquifer go on for? I read somewhere that the worst case scenario is 3 layers and so I attempted the cave in method with three concentric circles and even after blocking off and draining three levels of aquifer the fourth layer held more water.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hospital steals cloth from Elves!?

I have an early hospital set up with 2 chests that were full of cloth (5000/5000 or whatever the 'full' value is). Then the Elves came to trade at my Depot. I told my dwarves to bring the crates of crafts and woolen socks they had been preparing and then something really strange happened...

My dwarves came streaming out of the fortress and swarmed the caravan, grabbed cloth, and then pranced giddily down to the hospital and crammed all of the fiber cloth into the chest so that it held 117000/5000 cloth [I don't remember the exact number but it was a ridiculous amount over the max].

I was afraid this behavior would anger the Elves but they didn't seem to notice when I traded with them.

After they left I tried to get the cloth out of the chest and into my stockpile. I undesignated the hospital but that didn't work. I removed the chest and cloth exploded all over the floor, but the dwarves wouldn't touch it. I set it to forbidden and then reclaimed it. Still nothing. Finally I told them to dump the cloth, which they did, and then removed the dump designation and they finally moved it to the stockpile.

So I'm not sure what on earth happened there or how to reproduce it, but I did get a lot of free cloth somehow. Anyone have any idea how this happened?

DF Gameplay Questions / Capturing and Executing Enemies

What is the best (or most fun) way of capturing and executing your foes? In my last fortress I kept a long one tile underground path full of cage traps open so that all the goblins would get captured after the main entrances were closed up. I would then drop them one by one into the arena where my militia stood waiting. Not all that creative, I know. I am considering a deep hole with raised spear traps at the bottom and then flicking the spears on and off if the initial drop doesn't kill whatever gets tossed in.

What creative ways have you come up with?

DF Gameplay Questions / Tower Guard?

I want to build a tower that overlooks the entrance to my fortress so that all those annoying thieves and snatchers get shot to pieces as they flee my fortress. Unfortunately I have run into a problem. I am not sure how to get my crossbow dwarfs to stay in the tower. So here are a few questions I have.

1. When building towers is it preferable to put the guards on "station" orders or make the tower its own burrow and assign the guards to it?
2. Are dwarfs who are on "station" orders smart enough to go eat / drink / sleep on their own?
3. Are dwarfs smart enough to go right up to a fortification to shoot enemies or do I need to do something special to make sure they will stand in the right spot?

DF Gameplay Questions / Inactive Wall Constructions

I often have problems when I try to build any sort of dwarfy constructions involving walls. There always seems to be one or two sections that simply refuse to build. They stay inactive and nothing I can do will convince the masons to build them. What is going on and how do I fix it?

If I build a barracks and set two melee type squads to train in the same building do they interact with each other? As in, would dwarf from squad A benefit from a demonstration or sparring lesson hosted by a dwarf in squad B?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Therapist stops at 100 dwarves?

I have 107 dwarves in my fortress but Dwarf Therapist only shows 100 of them. How do I make it show the other 7?

DF Gameplay Questions / Safe Fishing?

So my fisher dwarfs are super dumb, they like to wander around outside where it is not safe at all. Is there a way to make fishing safe?

I attempted to divert the river underground to run past the fortress, but they couldn't catch any fish.

If I bar off the water will fish still be able to go through?

DF Gameplay Questions / Digging Upwards?

I am trying to have my dwarves dig up into the next level but am at a loss for how to do this...

Designating Down Stairs or Up/Down Stairs makes the level below available to dig into, but Up Stairs and Up / Down Stairs don't do the same for the level above.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bins locked in Trade Depot?

I have been using bins to trade with the caravans, but when they leave the graphic appears to have a number of empty bins sitting in the Depot (presumably the ones I used to bring my trade items in) but I can't seem to pick them up. Help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Interface Error?

The text in my game doesn't seem to tab correctly when I view dwarf inventory and it's even worse when I try trading with anyone. The tabs seem to be all off.

I am running DF 0.34.11
The texture pack is Ironhand 0.73
OS is Windows 7

I have tried other texture packs all of which have the same problem, except for the original ASCII pack which corrected itself after a while (but I would much rather play with tiles than ASCII characters). I have tried scrolling the mouse button to make more words fit on the screen and tabbing through display options, and it kinda works for viewing inventories but doesn't work at all for trade. I have pictures below, unfortunately time was short and I couldn't get a trade picture in. Basically the trade screen has each item cut off after about 8 characters and doesn't show any prices for any items.

Any suggestions?

I just started Dwarf Fortress a couple days ago. I visit the wiki, search the forums, and have done everything I can think of to learn how to play this game but I still have some questions.

1. How do I see how much an item is worth? I used to be able to see this in the item description but now it seems to cut off, even while trading!

2. Is there a way to have an 'auto maintain this amount of stuff' option for things like drink or wood?

3. Is there a faster way to select what you want to sell to a merchant besides clicking every single item?

4. Is there a faster way to move my crafts to the trade depot?

5. What sort of things should I trade for early on in the game? I'm still new so I don't even know what I need :p

6. How do I view what a Dwarf has in his inventory / what he is looking for to make him happy?

I just started playing DF and I made a mineshaft that I don't like, but I don't see how to fill it in. Can it be done?
