The difference is that with software it isn't tangible. There is no physical loss.
The physical loss is in money, and even if a game is pirated a million times, no doubt said game has a million, if not more, legal buyers. Companies that blame unprofitable game releases on piracy are lazy and deserve to go under.

By physical I meant inventory. It's not like you nicked a copy from the factory. Some companies don't sell "millions" of copies. Indy games are pirated alongside the games from big name companies.

I don't think I've ever played a fortress that had goblins come with beak dogs. I didn't realize they'd come mounted on them. I just assumed it was part of the game that hadn't been implemented yet. That's pretty cool! :)

By that logic counterfeiting money would be perfectly okay.

Share the wealth!

You don't give people pirated video games for other objects.

You could, and people do. It happens everyday, but I know that's not the kind of piracy being discussed here.

In the end it has the same effect. You take your "pirated" money to the store and buy something. The company ends up losing money. The difference is that with software it isn't tangible. There is no physical loss.

Are working mounts new to DF? I know the tag has been there, but I never noticed anything mounted before.

Stealing involves taking another person's possesions for yourself and thereby deprieving them of said possesions and their use. For example, if i steal your car, you have to walk to work. Where as i pirate your car, we both end up with exactly the same car and your copy of it completely intact. Sharing =/= stealing.

By that logic counterfeiting money would be perfectly okay.

'm generally against sex in games. Not because I'm a prude or anything, but because it's almost entirely pointless.

I agree, to an extent. Sex in games like Fable and Grand Theft Auto is pointless. Why bother adding it if it doesn't effect game play. However, sex in games like The Guild are a part of the way the game works (creating an heir to continue your family line.)

It would be interesting to return to the mountainhomes in adventure mode and realizing that there was a Urist McHappypants Jr.. Having the option when creating a new adventurer to play as one of your favourite character's heirs would be pretty cool.

An interesting idea, but a species that dislikes having sex is terribly implausible.

Perhaps not dislike, but I don't think it would be too far fetched to believe that dwarves derive little pleasure from it and use it only as a means of procreation.

Another humorous possibility would be if dwarves had sex drives similar to animals and only have sex when in season. I could imagine a fortress falling into pandemonium when dwarves come into season.  :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tropical
« on: October 05, 2008, 01:21:57 pm »
I've never generated a normal sized world without a tropical area. Are you genning small worlds? I haven't played around with the new world gen tools, but tropical areas are warm and wet, so whatever modifiers change those should help.

Yes, it's possible to run into skeletal and zombie elephants ;)

I personally do not believe that Spore will have a billion expansion packs. (3 tops)

Though the apperant "Next Expansion" or Spore sounds as stupid as it is lame... (And I actually love Spore... so that tells you something)

If the next expansion is totally worthless like the reports say... then I will change my mind.

I think the pricetag is a dead giveaway that you aren't going to be getting much. It's pretty much the equivalent of a sims "stuff pack" which retail for the same amount. I expect that the expansions will be around 40$

It's more than likely going to be like the Sims. I think the sims 2 has 8 or so expansion packs and almost the same amount of "stuff" packs...  ::)

You won't catch me buying an EA game any time soon.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress Guard: Yes or No?
« on: October 05, 2008, 09:11:00 am »
BTW, I don't think the guards still charge into battle when you're sieged. I had a goblin siege yesterday with a pretty full fortress and royal guard, and none of them bothered to defend the gates or attack the gobbos. Has anyone actually seen the guards charging in recent versions?

I had a few die defending the outside of my fortress last night after my military was squashed. I was glad to have them ;)

Will making it a ranged weapon stop them from sparring,  though?

The creature will use stealth and not show up on the list of creatures in fortress mode until it is found.

DF General Discussion / Re: New world - 1 REJECTS! New record?
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:55:34 am »
Seed 0 used to give 0 rejects. That changed a while ago though. I always used it for testing mods, so I didn't have to wait as long during world gen.

Sent the admins a complaint about them.

Rody we love ya but please be careful about sinking to their level. Always try to add at least one thing to the discussion in each comment.

TWENTY FOUR to 38 right now.

I've found that the admins don't really do anything.

DF General Discussion / Re: So, seriously, Toady, where did you go!
« on: October 01, 2008, 08:54:09 am »
If the unthinkable were to happen and Toady was no longer with us I bet Dwarf Fortress would stop generating random worlds and start generating random text. Later these texts would be collected and known as the Gospel of Toady..

An excerpt from Toady 2:12

A weeping child lay slumped over his keyboard. Toady one put a hand on his shoulder and asked him, "why do you cry, child?" The boy continued to weep, and said "It's the carp, they have killed all of my dwarves." Toady looked upon him compassionately and said unto him "Ah, but you must learn, my son. Losing is fun."
This lesson of wisdom served the boy well. Later in his life he lost an eye in a terrible miming accident, but he just smiled, because he was having fun
.
