DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best use for silver bars?

I am going to import stone, but in general I have better uses for it.

Namely, some slabs to appease restless ghosts -.- nothing too annoying yet, but i don't want anybody scared to death due to a murderous ghost I couldn't prevent.

Import stone? If you can defeat enough goblins to get goblinite, it's probably cheaper to import stone than to forge metal mechanisms. Just buy what boulders they bring in bulk and only use them for mechanisms.
I will, as soon as the next caravan rolls in. i only just got the hang of sieges, so I haven't been exactly the best trading partner.

...Or stone mechanisms?
All the stone I have avaliable are aquifers -.-

Been trying to dig past them, but I get easily confused.
So, what about silver mechanisms? Or lead mechanisms? If you've been getting your silver from galena then you'll have some lead anyway.
I've been getting my silver from goblins. It's kinda hard to get to mineral ore if I can't dig past early aquifers.

Mine out the frozen goblin's area, it's faster.
it's already thawed out a long ago, and I did indeed mined him out, but taking out the ramps was my priority

Recent research has pointed to silver bolts having some efficiency in hurting goblins.
if only there were slings, silver slingstones would be quite effective i imagine.

making minecarts would be good, they can be quite usefull at killing gobbos. otherwise i would just put the silver everywhere.
I don't quite have enough silver for that, though I'll be making statues anyway.

Silver spike ball seem a good idea, I guess I'll try that... when I find some more mechanisms >.< I'll just have to wait and see what my furnace operator has been smelting, perhaps some copper bars will turn out (and I'll make mechanisms out of that)

So I have a surplus of silver bars thanks to goblinite, and nothing to use it for because of my lack of experience with the game. I'm using some to make silver maces/war hammers (since it's apparently second best for those), but is there anything else worthwile to use them for?

If nothing comes, i'd be thinking to use them for mechanism, as I lack rock and so far i've been making copper ones. Would that be an ok use?

The situation resolved itself.

By which I mean winter came and the idiot got himself encased in ice.

While I was at it i did a little dam, just so that I could take all those precious metal bolts my dwarves carelessly threw in the river.

Also removed all the ramps from the dammed (and internal to my fortress) part of the river.

It's a shame it's not implemented in Dwarf mode :(

Think of how much it'd make cleaning easier!

Invaders don't normally eat, but I guess I can't totally rule out some sort of special attack. Maybe it counts as devouring if she kills a dwarf by biting off a part? I think I'll lock her up with some children and see what happens. If she somehow dies, well, death by child execution squad is a pretty solid punishment.
Wait, since the engravings say that she devoured them in a battle that happened in your fort, can you check if the body of the devoured dwarf is still around somewhere?

If not, "special attack" covers it.

Urist McPlayer cancels Edit Child Cap: Throwing Babies in Danger Room

now that's the dorfy thing to do.

And completly practical.

With training militiadorfs training in the dangerroom when uri Mcdumpsterbaby is thrown in they get hardened to atrocity and death.

If urist Mcbaby survives he gets TON of cool skills/scars.

you get rid of babez.

[/quote]exactly. Send the mothers for a quick training session and watch the babies fly. I even suggested that in the miscarriage thread, but I wasn't listened to.

(also, I believe babies just can't survive Not for a typical danger room session, at least)

P.S.: only in Dwarf Fortress you can suggest impaling babies because they're a waste of resources, and not be seen as a sociopath.

You can verify in the raws that Stosbubespo translates to Hategift. Turns out I've had a cannibal locked up in my zoo the whole time! Now, what to do with her?
Looks like !!Science!! has to be performed.

I wonder, will she eat a fresh dwarf corpse if you were to free her? This requires testing.

I say release her in a pit and throw children or peasent after her. Possibly from a height high enough to kill them, unless dwarfplosion occurs. Other options is to send the kid through a danger corridor leading to her "chambers" (possibly with a set of floodgates to prevent either from escaping the pit), since children aren't really resistant to danger room.

Or simply chuck them in the same room and hope the child/peasant doesn't get a lucky shot.

Though, now that I think of it, do invaders even need food?

Trying to get some goblinite from caged enemies, and...

fucking hell. Where did that caged goblin maceman go? Do cages sprout legs now and take strolls aroudn the map?

*grumbles*

I had that once. Goblin master lasher got out somehow. Caused goddamn chaos. Find him quick or you'll have smashed babies.

Or don't find him quick, I guess.
nah, he's still in the cage. Just couldn't find him. Now I see they've dumped him near the corpse stockpile.

Real classy, Urist. Reeal classy.

Still can't get him to drop his weapon and armor.

DF Gameplay Questions / Swimming goblins?
« on: September 15, 2012, 04:12:25 am »
I'm currently under a small siege, and my fortress is near a river. After i closed myself in I sent some markdwarves on the walls to plink away at the goblins, either kill them or drive them away i don't care.

One of the goblins, however, must've dodged in the river along with their cave crocodile. And now it's stuck there. He won't move (despite the rived having ramps), and eventually even the cave crocodile got bored and is leaving (though half of the siege is still hanging around, just not in my line of sight)

Anybody knows if I should fear swimming gobbos or I can safely leave him there?

Migrants sometimes show up as older children, but they should mature at the next season change.
if they don't, chances are they're vampires.
