DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Clothes management
« on: September 30, 2012, 06:39:53 am »
As far as I know, people simply sell tattered clothes to caravans. There's no option to highlight worn out clothes, and as you said dumping is really boring.

Just take all your clothes bins to the trade depot and sort them out in the trade.

well, if the pastures are big enough you don't have much to worry about, though murphy's law says that sooner or later your livestock will start killing each other. It's safer, though far more annoying, to have small pastures for single animals.

Or just slaughter most of them, and keep a single male and a couple of females of a single specie for quicker birthing.

Nothing heals a dwarf faster than the sense of impending, watery doom.
(in truth, it was to raise room value)

Why can't a Legendary Judge of Intent find out if a dwarf wants to drink him dry in his sleep?

Well that's odd, since all of my animals larger than a dog are outside in a group of pastures. Are there any other reasons why animals might attack one another?
they'll attack each other if they stand on the same square too long. Are you sure your pastures don't overlap, or that there's more than a single animal in them?

The dwarf will aim for the family jewels. No sense attacking a protected area with a subpar weapon.

Why do dwarves don't question the design choices of their fortress? Like, putting floodgates in the hospital, or chains in every bedroom?

Well, my simple suggestion is- never doubt the use of the "repeat task" order for workshops. Just set your bone carver to repeat making bone bolts, and you'll never worry about ammunition again. Set 1 clothier workshop to repeat make tunic, shoes, pants, and whatever else, and again, no problems there... as long as you have enough cloth. But that's a farming thing, and takes minimal effort to do.
Farming? That's a "looting elves caravan" thing, rather. They bring cloth bins by the dozen, 'specially if you don't have any. Now, if you're feeling charitable, you might even let them leave with twice the value of the items you've bought (at least). If you don't, or accidentally slip 'em some wood, well who cares? Seize it all!
It seems you have yet to experience the joy that is buying the entire caravan with nothing but Dwarf farmed xXclothXx items.
oh, I have, and it was glorious. it's just that for some reason, I always seem to slip the elves a wood item sooner or later. So I preemptively trade them lots of *rope reed fiber rope*, hoping they'll hang themselves from their precious trees on it. Except it doesn't always work either,so I have to resort to steal the stuff I need.

Latest elven caravan arrived. i was feeling charitable, since they always seem to leave in a huff for a reason or another (once, they left in the middle of a siege. Another they went to meet the latest ambush, and such and such).

'cept I accidentally slipped them some wood. And they were, as usual "wtf? no wai! u jerk!". At which point I seized all their cloth bins and seed bags and sand bags.

I just wish I could use some of that *<<rope reed rope>>* I'm gonna make to strangle the whole of them to death >.<

Whimsicle: What's left of child's dreams after said child is brought to a terrifying glacier, and then said child's dreams(and the child itself) are utterly crushed. By a blizzard man.
zombie blizzard men. Who'll tear the boy apart and have its body parts be raised to add to their growing army.

If you abandon a fortress because things are going wrong, you're doing it wrong! As long as one dwarf still lives, there is !!FUN!!

Yes, Boatmurdered was abandoned too soon!
fixed for you

Necromancer adventurers will spontaneously raise the dead, who will be friendly to them and eat the other dwarves. Sadly they suffer from no booze slowness.
Wrong; they only raise the dead when they want to.

Which is everytime they see a body part or corpse in my experience. While this can be very useful in army training, they need to be kept away from corpses, refuse piles and workshops with body parts.
Quite true, but weren't you talking about adventurer necromancers? As in, controlled by the player?
But isn't this thread about adventurers in fortress mode? Unfortunatly, dwarf mode doesn't quite allow that level of micromanaging :( which is a shame, I'd love to order Urist McUseless to light on fire those wooden walls he oh-so-casually got locked inside

"So an elf, a human, and the abominable spawn of a dark god long forgotten enter a bar..."

Why do my dwarves take the soap to the nearby river to wash themselves, when I have perfectly viable water pools indoor?

Make an arena somewhere over the cavern- filled with glass windows if possible, so your dorfs can watch the spectacle when bored.

Then cut a path from the surface and the cavern to the arena, keeping it closed until needed.

Wait for a Titan to show up, chain a child in the arena, open the pathways and then wait for the Raven and the Titan to get in and duke it out.

Watch the spectacle.

(Obviously, also lock them in after they get inside. No reason to risk anything thrash your fort not under your supervision)

Sounds like how I imagine a day goes in the Umbrella labs when they have an outbreak.

Only with more fire and magma.
oh so true...

or just build a MAXIMUM HAPPY FUN CHAMBER for kid migrants. Isn't that pretty much what everybody does these days?
