I think if you embark in an area that you adventured before, events related to that adventures might show up in engraving or statues.

Not sure of it, though.

Build a lookout tower or two, lock the vamps in and figure out a way to bring ammo and the eventual useless child meal-to-be inside without having the vamps get out.

Then make them a militia of markdwarves, or any kind of militia who shall be let out only during sieges.

Good enough?

On a somewhat related note, would dwarves get good thoughts from drinking from that pool?

Dig around a bit. Maybe you'll find a beerquifer.
I do hope it's not the result of a hideous monster twisted into a monstrous form, made of beer.

Though, on second thought, it'd be awesome. Dwarves would probably elect it their king.

Where's the fun in atom-smashing them so nobody knows they're missing?

Kill them and keep their body somewhere undiscovered! Then, when all the relatives and friends are ecstatic, send somebody to retrieve (or dispose!) of the body!

This way, sooner or later you'll get dwarves that just don't care about their friends. "Oh, Urist McBFF was mauled by a rabid grizzly bear. How sad. Now we'll need somebody else to cut all those trees. Oh well, back to work it is now!"

-I just failed at this post, replying to a post while there was a whole page I didn't read xP-

As most people have already said, you just got to find yourself something to do. Repurpose a nearby river to act as an impromtu flood-trap to invaders, find creative ways to kill cats so that the dorf they adopted will slowly become resistant to tantrums (dwarves can gain a tag that almost nullifies happines gains/losses, therefore making death as bad as a slap on the wrist to them. It's only "trained" by witnessing lots of bad things so you'll want to have plans to keep dorfs happy) and so on.

You just need imagination. The sky upper z-layer ceiling's the limit, and I'm pretty sure somebody must be planning for ways to break it.

Finally managed to breach the aquifer, after Urist McCarpenter got his head out of his ass and remembered that no, you can't stand on a wall if you want to build it.

The ambushes. The war grizzly and the militia made quick work of it, except that now most of my farm plots are covered in gobbo blood.

Hope you like your booze iron-rich, dorfs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Damnit use the gold you like, not candy!
« on: September 25, 2012, 01:33:23 am »
Don't moody dorfs simply pick the closest, non forbidden material available?

If you're worried about your candy, simply forbid the wafer you dorf is using. As long as they aren't the only material of the mood the dorf will do something else (if no primary material, in this case metal, is available after they've taken it, the dorf will make an iron artifact. Unless you messed with the raws, in which case it's "first inorganic material on the list")

So many excellent suggestions, haha.

Part of my map is haunted, could he.. help my marksdwarves train? I was thinking I could make a room of doom, drown him and have his old mates continually fire at him from behind fortifications for a bit of practice.
depends I guess, is it haunted-reviving, or simply haunted-shitty stuff raining/misting in?

Else placing him in a room under the haunted part of the map, possibly if you can't bother making a drowning room just cage an hostile with him, then use it for training.

Dear urists mclazyasses
You neglected to remove the butterfly corpse blocking the door, letting in 15 goblins. Jeez, there was 147 of you. Hope that 2 month party and infinite break was worth it. Now that you are all dead, i hope you had a nice day.

were you playing Boatmurdered or what?

She used to haul logs and stones, but then she took a bolt to the knee, huh?

Because so far nobody quite managed to find a way to get a were-dwarf to "Transform and roll out!"

How come any drink you can produce is alcoholic? Is there no space in a fortress for, say, berry juice or ground-sunberry-blend-in-boiling-water?

dump him outside in a corpse stockpile? That's what I do in my rock-less fortress.

Not working too good lately, got 3 muderous ghosts roaming around and baby ghosts walking the ceiling. Still, nothing unmanageable yet.

Another ill effect of this is that much of your engravings will be of cheese. Without any history of glorious heroes beating elves to death with other elves the engravers kinda just draw whatever pops in their dwarfy little brains. Which is cheese. Its ALWAYS cheese.....:P
unless you deliberatedly try to get ambushed by giant badgers/goblin snatchers/kobold thieves/sieges before engraving anything.

Which isn't really any better. I don't know which is worse, images of cheese Vs dwarves curled up in fetal position as bonobos laugh at them.

Because that's the elfy way to do it! What sane dorf would ever want to shoot a harmless, inanimate, unfeeling piece of wood when they can make their own gobbo pincushion?

How can pets (and in general, dorfs) find meeting areas that are most definitely too far away from any normal traffic area?
