Life Advice / Re: Going on a diet
« on: February 10, 2014, 10:23:33 pm »
1: Avoid sugary drinks, drink Tea or water instead.

2: Eat more vegetables, beans, and fruits than meat. If eating meat choose lean cuts. A slice of chicken about the size of a deck of cards usually contains as much protein as you'll need in a day.

3: Avoid foods that are empty carbs like potatoes. Also avoid most sauces and dips, Ketchup alone is filled with sugar.

4: Find a form of exercise that you enjoy. It can be something simple like walking or running (I chose Karate).

Also, I'd caution against going on diets just for the sake of loosing weight. Use the Body Mass Index scale to see what your BMI is. Remember that it doesn't account for weight from muscle, so it's possible to be considered obese despite being a wall of meat.

So my teacher told us we needed to write an persuasive essay then assigned us our topics and stances. I'm supposed to write an essay advocating the invasion of North Korea...

Any ideas?

Can you post the save so I can try it out myself?

This is all incredibly fascinating but I have one question: could one of you make a video that shows how to create the submarine? So far my attempts haven't been successful.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:17:26 pm »
Everything is dying from a forgotten beast syndrome. Quarantine is in effect to prevent spreading to clean dwarves- they're sitting in a locked off area behind a drawbridge to keep out the sick. So far my entire first military squad has succumbed to a combination of the syndrome, which causes acute numbness at first, and goblin sieges. Perhaps they sent the FB to weaken my fort? Perhaps they heard of the illness and decided to attack in my moment of weakness? Perhaps one of my sick dwarves is going to pull the lever that causes seas of magma to pour out the volcano upon which my fort rests, wiping them out to the goblin?

Perhaps in a future update goblins will be capable of such thought.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Materials and Dwarves Keep Teleporting
« on: February 01, 2014, 06:45:13 pm »
Had a longer post then had a gateway timeout.

Materials always vanish from a stockpile then reappear at random places- such as into other stockpiles, in my military tower, or on top of things being deconstructed. Just before my OP I saw a whole chunk of stone vanish from my stone stockpile and right in front of my expedition leader over fifty blocks away.

I have only found one dwarf that has vanished, this one stranded on top of my military tower. Any other vanishing dwarves I haven't noticed gone until the announcement saying they have been missing for a week. I have never found a body.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Materials and Dwarves Keep Teleporting

I believe my copy of Dwarf Fortress is haunted or something. I've seen evidence of mass transportation before, large amounts of material- typically stone and blocks- show up in areas with no explanation. Numerous of my dwarves, including two of my legendary marksmen, have gone missing for no reason- their bodies completely unaccounted before.

Is this a recorded bug with a solution, or do I need to wait for the next update?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pound for Pound, best disposable war animal

I've modded various underground beasties to be available on embark and in trade. So far the most use I've got out of the GCS was in the first year, when they took down several of those pesky vultures. I'd just rather use soldiers...

They're best used in conjunction with Marksdwarves. I once used them and about twenty legendary Marksmen to kill half a swarm of clowns.

But to answer your question; in my most successful fort I had over three-hundred at one time.

Adamantine is clearly listed on a number of in-game menus, so I don't see why the word needs to be put in spoilers. It's the associated risks that need spoiler tags.

That is true. My first trip to the circus was as enjoyable as it was angering.

As was mine. When I first started DF I had no idea such a substance existed until my miners ran into it. My three hundred wafers of candy were extracted and, being in no hurry, found several other veins to mine. I mined the first until I hit slade, then mined the second until I hit the clown car.

I scrambled my military, my modded in Giant Cave War Spiders holding the line admirably until my militia arrived. I managed to take down about half of them, then my line of spiders fell, then my military. I walled off the the first cavern from the second, vowing to return and kill them all in retaliation...

Now I want a good war. Does anyone know a few good mods that make combat more interesting? Could be adding new species or new intricacies, I'm in a mood.

the tank has never been destroyed in combat because since the proxy wars with the soviet union they never had anything better than tanks from the 70s to compete with ror

True, but being able to take a detonation of TNT without any crippling damage does say a thing or two about its design. Al-Qaeda used to suicide bomb those tanks, nowadays they don't.

I'd suggest Kim Jong-Un to liberate Korean city Vladivostok. Then it will be not so one sided as against USA but mad enough to have a right to be called a crazy dictator

It's also speculated that the South Korean military is sufficiently powerful enough that they'd wipe the floor with the North before the US gets any major assets deployed as support. South Korea spends more on their military than the North has in GDP after all.

176
Their military is equipped with obsolete cast-offs from the Soviet Era military. While North Korea is a bit odd, they know that trying to start a modern day war against South Korea or the US would end in their total destruction. They may be able to do some damage, especially if they shoot missiles at Seoul, but such a "victory" would be short lived. The United States have a type of tank that has never been destroyed in combat, carriers, drones, and jet planes out the wazoo, and a military more capable of rapid mobilization than any other force known today.  The North Koreans have a Special Forces unit that punches things, few of which are likely to be bullets or missiles(number four on the list).

Think of the situation as a staring contest between a benign psychopath and a rich government man. In any contest North Korea will lose, badly.

Personally I'd prefer to have Slade arms and armor.

Simple: do some modding and make it so GCS's reproduce and are trainable for war.

Personally I think it could have been better if the Groinsaws were Armpitsaws instead.
