DF Gameplay Questions / Potential Issues with Upcoming Personality Traits
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:12:23 am »
Quote
A soldier failed to move when confronted with a kill-ordered adder through a series of bug fixes, and when I finally got some movement, he ran away and climbed up a tree. He has "great difficulty mastering his fear when confronted with danger", so I guess that wasn't a bug...
-A quote from the January 24, 2014 Devlog.

Obviously such a dwarf isn't fit for the military unless there is a way to train his fear out of him. This represents a potential revolution in Military Development since personality traits will have more of an influence on people. I see such issues as having the Captain of the Guard/Sheriff/Hammerer refusing to punish certain dwarves because they're friends or other such nonsense. My questions are as followed:

1: Will there be ways to train dwarves to overcome certain personality traits? Perhaps using the age old "Traumitization" model?
2: Will new traits get retroactively added to Historical Figures in old saves if we update to the new mode?
3: Will such traits influence rather safe (in comparison) military jobs, such as sniping from the battlements during a siege?
4: Will these traits make Nobles somehow more prone to unfortunate accidents?

Bronze Colossus, they don't need any fancy firebreath- they'll just beat you to death with their fists. Also, if captured, they provide an excellent training target for marksmen.

Would you read the rest? (this is a question, not request)

At the very least could you tell me if the fix has taken care of that issue? I'm a little eager for feedback.

EDIT:
*finishes chapter*

NOPE NOPE NOPE.

Uh... can you explain your reaction please?

Edit:
Never mind, just reread the thing and it came off a little... rapey.

First chapter has been altered and updated to correct that. Sorry about that.

As to recommendations:

@Gamerlord
I'm actually a small time fanfiction writer myself. Do you think you could read a little of this and give me some feedback?

If you're inclined please leave it in a review or two, this thread was made for recommendations after all.

Wild hives only appear on [soil] type floors. If you floor them all over outside you won't have any outside to worry about.

Then it appears I have another reason pave the entire map.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Organizing Your Dwarves
« on: January 18, 2014, 10:40:38 am »
I always give my Military Dwarves numbers.

For example: my Militia Commander will be called One-One, his second in command will be One-Two, then One-Three up till I hit One-Ten. The first number always designates the squad they're in while the second is their position within the squad. If a particular Military Dwarf distinguishes themselves in some way I will fix Ace on the end of their name, there can be only one Ace per squad. If one of my military dies I draft a suitable replacement and, until they hit Great with their weaponskill, they are called Recruit. If a child is born with suitable stats and disposition for the military they automatically lose their name and become a Cadet.

Being able to retire forts without them going belly up.

Climbing Giant Cave Spiders.

Sending out my militia to raze cities and towns rather than waiting for a siege or ambush to fulfill my warlike urges.

Any titan or beast made out of inorganic material can be difficult to kill. Make sure that, if you run into a titan, take a look at it and see what its made of- then plan accordingly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Unpreventable Infections?
« on: January 14, 2014, 05:18:42 pm »
I'm currently looking at a way to deal with infection, though it seems so far only to delay death. Have only tried it on one subject so far, will purposely injure dwarves for more people to work with.

Scored a 3, though I question the relevance of some of the questions.

I've recently started playing around with various tokens in the raw files, and managed to get my female Giant Cave Spider to lay eggs in a nest box. The thing is though, they're not hatching. I've had three separate clusters, and not a one has hatched.

Is there something that I might be missing?

This is also what inspired me to choose my name, and my current avatar.
