Life Advice / An Explanation of Absence
« on: May 24, 2014, 11:46:31 pm »
So, i've been off the grid for a while. Even the people here on the forum who i call friends and know me through other means have heard next to nothing from me, and i left behind projects i had promised to dedicate time and effort to. I'm not actually posting this here to seek advice or reach out for help, but i think some are owed more than the radio silence i've provided.

The explanation i have is... messy, and complicated, and i probably won't even talk about the whole of it here just now, but i do want to give a vague idea of what's been going on in my life and why i havn't been around. At first it was just a deficiency of time and energy. I've been writing a novel, and it's the first time in my life i've ever been serious about getting a novel published, at times the work has poured out of me to the point where it was hard to pay heed to much else. I've also been struggling with some identity and anxiety issues that at times were compounded by what was sometimes a daily struggle to avoid slipping into depression. It got to the point where not getting any sleep in a given day became commonplace, though truth be told the extra time didn't aid the almost bipolar variation between frenzied work and inability to get anything accomplished.
Other creative and social endeavours of mine have also suffered, i normally run a group for local writers to get together, swap ideas and run creative exercises, but on that front i haven't done much of anything either. Some professional pursuits have also consumed me to the point of nigh obsession at points. I've had my brushes with freelance journalism, and one particularly involved investigation with rather horrifying subject matter forced me to convince myself that i was toying with a field that i was wrong for, that could ruin my life if i didn't stop.

Back to the topic at hand, for this whole period... i was sort of trying to post here. To contribute to the projects i'd started and the ones i simply liked. Trying to keep in contact with people, but something always seemed to get in the way. At first it was just a lack of time, energy, or leftover creative juice, but it sort of morphed into something different. As time went on and it became clear that i wasn't simply late in posting to things, that i was on hiatus it started to bug me. How often had i gone on unannounced Hiatus before? How often had i left other people hanging so that i could spend some time grappling with a mood disorder or the last tragedy or my own busy schedule? It got to the point where i was scared to post on things, to admit that i had been gone, to remind people that i'd broken a promise, even one that in the scheme of things didn't matter in anyone's life. It was a positive feedback loop of sorts, i was scared to post because i hadn't been posting.

The first thing to understanding the way things really are is to understand that everything is tangible, even the intangible. Ideas arn't just something that sit in your head, they are real, and they have power. There are things out there that want what's right there in the mind. Some arn't so bad, Gods want your worship but take care of you in turn. Fey will try to give you joy so that they may feed off of it. Spirits will gaurd you if only you keep them around by acknowledging them. However, some of the things out there arn't so fair minded. They'll make a deal with you, and at first it will seem you're getting something out of the bargain, but then they'll ruin you and feed on your suffering. These are the creatures we should really fear, and hope that they will be content with out fear.
-Excerpt from "On the Multiverse: Recollections of a traveller."

You are a demon of the first hell, the crossroad from hell that reaches into the rest of the cosmos, and the entrance of the dead. You're a vassal to the minor lord of an infernal fiefdom, with properties and servants of your own, something not one in a million demons can claim. However your ambition for power reached too far too quickly, and now your lord has called for your execution. Fortunately you had prepared for such a possibility.
You are -or were- a pact-demon of the highest rank, only a step away from negotiations to be turned into a demon of greater power and influence. You have the power to make magically binding deals with mortals, and the debt from those deals in itself is a form of power that you carry within yourself. You can transfer it and use it as currency, or use it to alter the very nature of things, not least of all the indebted. You had amassed a great collection of this power, more so than one of your stature had any right to collect, and you used every ounce of it to trade, bribe and persuade, all to the end of keeping you from utter annihilation. You secured a trial with the judicial system of hell, rather than one presided over by the very lord who would destroy you, and were found guilty.
Your guilt was not in question, but your punishment was. You narrowly avoided being sentenced to death or slavery, and were instead granted a rather unconventional punishent, your status as a citizen of hell revoked.

You are still a demon, but your memory, power and properties are all to be taken from you. You are to be sent to a mortal plane without recollection of the politics of Hell, without any of the power you have ever gained, little more than a husk of soul-stuff. You don't plan on allowing this to be the final word however. Though it defies infernal law you expend all of the debt you have collected to arrange for some of your memories to be protected, for some small tokens to be reclaimed for you, and for a little power to be provided to you once you touch down in the mortal realm.
It is time for the final arrangements to be made, your debt to be spent.

General Discussion / Time on Bay12
« on: September 19, 2013, 07:58:41 pm »
So I don't expect this to be a long lived thread, but I thought it was neat that my time logged in is 30 days. I've sort of spend thirty days of my life on here =p, though plenty of that time was simply as a tab in my browser while I did other things like real person work, or working on my writing.

If you arn't embarrassed to say, how much time have you clocked in with us? The time I do spend here has mostly been in the roleplay and games section, personally, what about you? And what do you think of the time you've spent here?

Prince is a suggestion game with a focus on medieval fantasy politics, centered around the prince Raynor Casar.

It has been on hiatus for a while, but with the encouragement of others I have decided to return to it, and i'm muchly glad for it. I've archived a textblock here on this thread that contains all of the story posts, but by no means do you need to read through it all, as a returning reader or a new arrival to the game.

Raynor Casar, Royal Prince of Analysse, popular claimant on the future crown.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Dark Entity, a multiplayer fantasy-horror game
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:15:05 pm »
For the better part of a week i've been working on a game that i would like to give a try here. Content is currently limited but i will add more after the first playthrough. The game features two different factions working to amass power and destroy one another. One player begins play as the dark entity, the evil that the heroes seek to defeat. Gameplay features tile based gameplay, with the majority of the board being empty until tiles are explored.

People May sign up at their whim, and i can concievably adjust play to fit any volume of players, but will at minimum require four to have a balanced game, if enough players are interested i may split factions and create more than one dark entity (each fighting eachother in addition to heroes). I would appreciate it if those who sign up can be reasonable sure that they can post at least once a day, but i will simply play your turn for you if something should come up and you don't post a day.

This is the very first playtest ever, so i don't have bucketloads of content yet, but that should change if by the end of this game folks want to play again.

Life Advice / Considering anxiety medication
« on: July 12, 2013, 12:30:29 am »
So i've been having some kinda crappy depression and anxiety issues for a while now, and until very recently things had taken a turn for the better. Mostly because I began to take some initiative in my life and try to change it for the better.
However, a string of events and circumstances of the past two weeks have brought on distressing panic attacks and an inability to cope with things that should otherwise be on the "suck it up" section of the social distress meter. It's brought to light that I can't really cope with my issues as I have been with any degree of consistency, and is bringing up all sorts of issues that I quite simply cannot afford to deal with right now.

Anyway, I was hoping that anyone with experience with taking anxiety meds could help give me some first hand knowledge of any experiences they've had with them, good or bad.

Life Advice / A bad place.
« on: March 29, 2013, 02:47:54 am »
My head is in a really bad place right now and it's hard to shake out of. I'm not looking for pity or even necessarily emotional support from this little slice of the internet, but i'm wondering.
I'm sure many of you have before reached a point in your life where it's hard not to feel like you are broken. How do you cope? What is your own way of making things seem just a little bit better for yourself, how do you deal with life while it's kicking you?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Prince: A Royal Suggestion Game
« on: March 11, 2013, 06:19:47 am »
You are a prince, born to a royal family that has ruled the coastal country of Analysse for three generations. Your father, Lorin the Lionhaired inherited the throne from his elder brother who died with no heir, while Lorin has many children. You've long been told that your father is a strong leader and an experienced general, and that he has worked hard to secure Analysse from it's enemies. Your mother is known as a quiet and unassuming woman who spends much of her time in study and contemplation, at this point in your life neither of your parents have paid much attention to you, far too busy with the affairs of state and with the raising of the other children.

You are the thirdborn of five royal children and are currently eight years old. Your eldest sibling and only brother William is eight years your senior, you see him rarely, and it seems that servants are reluctant to tell you much of him.Your eldest sister Ritalia is five years your senior, and dotes on you and the younger girls. Catherine is two years younger than you, and Mary is only a year old. You are told that you have two half brothers, whatever that may mean.

What is your name? The name of your royal family?

You've spent much of your early life carefree, able to do as you will, perhaps subject to an occassional lesson on etiquette or history, but not enough to be obtrusive. But where did you spend most of this part of your life?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This shall be a simple suggestion game with only loose rules governed in part by the fickle master that is the RNG god. Character creation will occur in multiple stages, each governing a portion of the princes early life rather than it's entirety.

What`s up with lordship being locked? Was it a mistake? If it was and it can`t be unlocked i will give this thread over to Maldevious, change the name, and link to the original thread here : http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=121161.750. Unless he would prefer to make his own of course.
If it wasn`t a mistake i must wonder why.

General Discussion / Arms and Armor discussion
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:48:24 pm »
So i've been looking into and researching quite a bit in the way of pre-gunpowder warfare as of late, and i find that i'm quite consistently surprised by the misconceptions i have that fall apart. Thought i would open up a thread on the topic and see what folks have to say about it.
As an example, i was surprised by just how mobile and light weight plate armor actually is. The stuff is pretty easy to move around in if it's a quality set that's put on properly; i've always thought of plate as being heavy and unwieldy, that chainmail would be easier to move in, while in actuality chainmail restricts movement and tires out a warrior *more* than the more advanced plate armor. On the other hand, plate armor is a lot easier to pierce and can be crumpled.
What do you guys have to say on the topic? Or related topics for that matter?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / 1002 bad GM Tips
« on: December 26, 2012, 04:27:47 pm »
Because what one shouldn't do is just as important as what should do. Put up tips on how to be a bad GM. I'll start.

1.Railroad Plot, plan out every major event in advance, if your players somehow manage to worm their way out of the delightfully contrived story you've crafted then deus ex machina them back into it, use dragons if you have to.

2.Make the characters obsolete. So your characters have gotten that super-awesome ability they've been looking forward to since the games start? Crap, you havn't thought about how to deal with it, it could ruin your beautifully crafted plot! Quick! instead of figuring out an idea to make it work rewrite the script so that your players continually get thrown into situations where that snazzy new teleportation spell is useless.

3. Have your characters overshadowed by npc's, your players arn't humble enough, it's time to show them how little they matter in the scheme of your plot. Add an awesome npc to the group, have them be far stronger than any of your characters in that characters area of specialisation. Let this npc be batman to your parties robin. Contrive events where he needs to save your players from certain doom, let him narrarate plot constantly instead of letting the players figure out what's going on for themselves, have the npc take down dragons and main villians right in front of the main characters, while they stand helpless to really do anything. After all, your npc is the major plot driving force, your players are just along for the ride right?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / In Progress: DF Cultists!
« on: December 13, 2012, 02:59:08 am »
So i'm creating rules for a Dwarf Fortress setting game, the basic plot being that of characters establishing a cult to a newly risen god. Not a nice god. A god that wants to take over all of existence. I haven't decided on what the player limit will be but will decide that after interest is gauged.
The twist is that i'm not going to have total control over the setting. I'm going through rolling up a whole bunch of Dwarf Fortress worlds to find something ideal, and while i may not use everything in the generated world a great deal of it will be drawn from the one i decide upon. ( I will be changing dumb names though, no forgotten beast, you may not be called "the lobster of suffering.")
On the table will not only be drawing power from the god mentioned above, but also such nasties as forgotten beasts and demons. Speaking of nasties, the world i'm generating is going to be high in megabeasts and night-creatures and such, but also high magic, under a system of my own devising.
I will be posting rules shortly, but would appreciate any input you have on what you would like to see. I'll probably be using a mostly d100 based system for sheer variety, but if no one would enjoy that i will scale back my numbers and use a d20 system.

Note: i suppose i should warn early on, i won't slow down play very much if someone doesn't post. I'm going to adopt the policy that if you stop posting (either temporarily or permanantly) i will npc your character until you return. While npc'd your charachter will continue to do actions you previously specified you were going to do, but once those run out they won't accomplish much. They will continue to perform basic duties and can remain at least somewhat relevant to plot, but they won't take risks or make big accomplishments or progress, they, like other npc's will become a fixture of the setting. This does not neccecarilly make them plot immune however, if something big goes down that can't really be avoided (invading army led by a dragon or something, for instance) you *can* die while npc'd, i will try to avoid it but am not going to stretch believability to make it make sense, this is going to be a dangerous setting.

There used to be a lot more stuff here, but i forgot about character limit, so lots of the worldbuilding stuff is on page three. Once i'm done recording world-gen properly i'll start a new thread for it and organize it all very neatly.
