DF General Discussion / Bone vs. Leather
« on: November 23, 2012, 07:24:53 pm »
Which is better? I happen to be running a fortress with little in the way of metal so i'm a little strapped for metal armor. Leather and Bone are the easiest commodities for me to turn into armor, in your opinion which provides better protection?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Aginmar, a dnd based suggestion game!
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:54:57 am »
Aginmar, a last stand for civilization on the borders of the Rueronian wastes, or so some would have you believe...
Though the waste has ceased its encroachment the damage it has caused is irreversible. An empire turned to ash and a half dozen nations were destroyed as a result, either from the creatures that crept out of the wastes or from the press of refugees fleeing it. It has become a fact of life, you either avoid the waste and all that comes from it, or you are destroyed by it.
Aginmar is the exception, when the country around it fell apart the town stayed. A local warlord heeded the pleas of the towns meager forces, and he's moved in to protect and rule over the town. You are a servant of Aginmar, and as far as you're concerned he's (for the town was named after the warlord that claimed it) the only power worth mentioning. Unless you count his master Vigath, the dark god who Aginmar worships.

This suggestion game is a part of a larger project i have been working on. The suggestion game portion will have three parts, each fleshing out the setting just a bit more for everyone involved. You can think of this as a warmup, i encourage you to find out as much as you can about what's going on, i assure you there is a lot, and i highly doubt you will manage to uncover all of the secrets in this portion of the project. Firstly, vote for which part/class we will be working with first. The order doesn't matter so much, but the class you pick will steer the game in different directions in some obvious ways, and a few more subtle ones.

Part One: A War-Party to battle
-Footsoldier: 1st Level Fighter
-Warmage: 1st level Warmage
-Battle-Healer: 2nd level Adept
-Guide: 1st level Scout
All characters outfitted and trained for war. A War-Party has been dispatched to deal with a local goblin menace that has been harrying locals for the past few days, you are a member of that party, and have been picked as the acting field officer.

Part Two: A Struggling Apprentice
-1st level Wizard, can be generalized or any specialization. Specialization will mean the replacement of familiar for another ability, as detailed in Unearthed Arcana 3.5. I would also appreciate if gender was picked.
You are the newest student of a local mage, he has other students, but is stingy with his teachings, and you are beginning to feel that he sees his students as assets to be exploited more than anything.

Part Three: A Cultist Undercover
-2nd level Rogue
-2nd Level Cleric
-2nd Level Warlock
Aginmar has sent you very far away to assist a small cell of cultists in a distant city, he expects you to help them spread the worship of Vigath in the city, but subtly. The inhabitants would not likely be friendly to your cult if you were exposed.

More information will be provided depending on your part and class choices. All characters human.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Tournament Unlimited: The Finals
« on: September 28, 2012, 12:21:57 am »
Alright, the basic idea of this game is that we take characters in media and throw them into a giant tournament together. These characters can be from comic books, video games, movies, television, anime, novels, plays, history or even present tense reality. The challenges these characters face however, are entirely random. They can be anything from combat, to sporting events to quizzes to household cooking, as such victory can vary wildly from expectations. As an example, if Professor Oak and the Punisher ended up in the same round together and knife fighting was rolled, bad ol' Frank Castle is unquestionably going to be the victor, if instead mentoring is rolled then the Prof. would be supreme. It won't always be so clear cut though, so sometimes debate is going to come into play, keep it clean though kids. I may write up flavour text for certain match-ups, depending on how much time i have in a round.

Rule 1: Your chosen character must be someone who's either well known, or easily google searchable, or i'm vetoing it, this is where the danger of real life folks come into play, we may not actually know a lot about their capabilities.
Rule 2: Please, no god-like charachters, they arn't fun. However, Gods themselves arn't neccecarilly thrown out the window entirely, long as they have some serious limitations. For all intents and purposes lets use Q as the template for a godlike charachter, he can pretty much do anything, while Thor from the marvel universe (or the Norse Mythology for that matter) is limited, and therefore is a fair entry.
Rule 3: just to clarify, your charachter does not need to be specific, you could say "Cacodemon from Doom", or "Elephant from Boatmurdered" just as easily as Gandalf or Wonder Woman.
Rule 4: for the moment lets say one charachter per person per tournament. I am waiving this rule for the first tournament however, so that we can fill slots.
Rule 5: I'll be judging, and therefore researching charachters if i need to (which i will, possibly a lot), and probably consulting with other people who know charachters better than i do.
Rule 6: For tournaments with fewer charachters each round will consist of 3 different competitions per matchup.

I have a list of random possible competitions from when i played this game before, please add to it!
Baseball, par course, chilling out, orc slaying, surgery, swimming, throwing a tantrum, pokemon training, space exploration, cookie selling, arm wrestling, maintaining audience interest, computer wizardry, presidential campaign, pschological health, jousting, lightsabre duel, cooking, gymnastics, beauty contest, ping pong, acquiring fangirls (and/or boys), invention, belly dancing, speed texting, IQ test, Knifefight, Singing competition, leading troops, archery, snow boarding, eating contest, civilisation building, strip poker, being scary, smashing stuff, tap dancing, detective work, being a mentor, argueing on the internet, fisticuffs, playing musical instruments, eating with chopsticks, assasination, farming, captaining a star vessel, dancing, chicken kicking, staring competition, dragon slaying, dating, child raising, spaceship combat, learning magic, bear taming, hunting, being a movie action hero (as in, an actor), politeness, composing poetry, shootout, living a monk lifestyle, velociraptor chainsaw jousting, wizards duel (for fairness, a charachter who knows no magic has a month of prep time in their own universe.), surviving damage, cheerleading, pranking, stalking, dogfighting (with planes), bartending, M.M.A combat, learning a language, mud wrestling, melodrama, chess, anthropology, disk jockeying, mario kart, Hilly Billy Fencing (two by fours instead of swords), triathalon, Knitting, memory games, horseback riding, weapon of choice combat, bowling, taking over the earth, entertaining a bored child, being a drill sergeant, popularity contest, Iajitsu duel, marathon, trash talking, lying, science fair, surfing, giving relationship advice, fashion design, being a good scientist, bull riding, building robots, soldiering, sailing, Bushido, surviving a zombie apocalypse, stand up comedy, shotput, pick up artistry, spying, sniping (with guns, not auctions), fencing, being a camp supervisor, endurance juggling, becoming more powerful, ruling a nation, living longer, recon, causing chaos, hockey, mathematics, no holds barred deathmatch, being creepy, picking presents, fighting ninjas, drinking contest, handling the stress of a crisis, legal battle, and crime scene investigation, ability to behave normally when exposed to high amounts of caffeine, asteroid field navigation, cross country vehicle racing, urban vehicle racing, protecting a city, navigating a trap filled dungeon, lasting longer against an endless onslaught of demons (dungeons and dragons demons for logistical purposes), living a balanced high school life, a game of riddles, locating ancient artifacts, mediating disputes peacefully.

General Discussion / Slender Man: Giving a Piggyback
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:59:23 am »
So, Slender Man, being the kind patron he is, decided to bring along a rather invasive browser Hijacker called chatzum, or search safer onto my computer. I can only assume that they both simply want to frazzle me. This little creature, while not exactly evil (On a scale of Innocent to Hitler i dub it douche) is rather annoying, forcing me to have to switch around my settings over and over again. Not only that, but it refuses to die. Any advice?

General Discussion / Religion and Spirituality Discussion
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:01:31 pm »
So, I've noticed that the topic of religion keeps coming up in threads that may be inappropriate. To address this i thought it prudent to throw up this thread for people to talk about religion and spirituality. That said, i realize putting this thread up is like playing with fire, and if it gets out of control i will be having it locked. Remember to be respectful, but also open-minded in discussion, someone merely having different views than you is not an attack on your character in it's own right.
