DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 06, 2016, 11:47:51 am »
So part of my embark is a reanimating terrifying biome. A marmot corpse came wandering in and got a little too close to my fort. A nearby fisherdwarf charged in and started getting wrecked. At this exact moment, a were-camel showed up, charged them both and the marmot corpse and dwarf basically exploded. The were-camel tore up my pastured animals and charged into my fort, but just before hitting a cage trap it transformed into a human child and wandered off, which was too bad...

Meanwhile the marmots head and the dwarfs left arm reanimated. The head was caged and a passing dwarf kicked the arm into submission. I'm smelting iron to make weapons and armor to deal with the undead nuisance.

I, too, depend on this mod to play Dwarf Fortress, it's basically essential. Thank you!

Adventure mode is moving to an awesome state, but kinda sucks right now. It'll get better. Until it does, I play an older version.

Playing an older version.

My human hammerer had been tasked with taking out a bandit commander. After finding a couple pikemen eager for glory, we set out and approached their camp from the south.

The commander's henchmen were easily cut down, but the commander herself was very skilled. Every swing of my hammer met nothing but air. Then she thrust her silver pike forward, and it pierced leg muscle and nerves, and I found myself in the very unenviable position of lying under a pissed off commander.

Fortunately one of my pikemen buddies engaged her, and I was able to crawl away. I reached their camp and began digging through their bags in the hopes of finding something, anything useful. I pulled out an iron short sword and looked over at the duel, dismayed to see the commander in good health while my friend was getting overwhelmed from blow after blow. I crawled over to try and help, but I was too slow. The commander cut down the pikeman and ended them with a pike to the head when I was about 20 feet away.

My only remaining ally finished their fight and rushed towards the commander, but they wouldn't get there in time. She had already turned her attention to me and began to confidently advance. I only had one chance. I had never thrown a sword before, but in desperation I hurled it at her as hard as I could.

All the gods must have smiled on me at that moment. An eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, leg for leg. The spinning sword struck her in the leg and carved through nerves and muscle. As she collapsed, my pikeman and I moved in together. On the ground, she was unable to hold us both at bay and I smashed her head in. After ransacking their camp, we made our way back to the castle.

The men were saddened by the loss of their comrade, but satisfied that justice was dealt and that the lands were a bit safer. Unfortunately the nerve damage permanently ended my ability to stand, so my adventure came to a quick end, but as far as adventures go, it was a pretty good one.

1) Goblin invasions only occur if there are goblins nearby with large enough population.  This can make things less interesting.  There are a number of threads discussing how to ensure you get the goblins to come - I think the simplest is just to use a shortish world history.

I'm experimenting with this by removing the goblin creature token that makes multiple litters rare, and added one that gives them something like 10-20 goblins per birth. I also made them grow to adults in 2 years. Worldgen has seen all civs spread much faster, and I think it's because a lot of goblins are joining other races. My fortress is still new, but I'm hopeful that they should be able to quickly form large armies to throw at me.

My weaponsmith got a fey mood! Oh, he grabbed adamantine! This is gonna be great! He's grabbing rock blocks, bone and leather... He's finished! It's a... Oh. Of course. An artifact adamantine war hammer. Just another reason to let the clowns out and forsake this world.

My fortress is running at 23fps, and not much is going on. I think I'm going to start training many more military dwarves and challenge the clowns before trying a modded world. One tweaked for a bit more fun.

Can't you just use Goblinite for your iron and request flux (DOLOMITE!!!) from your outpost liaison to get some more? That would be very dwarfy and effective.

I tried this in my previous fort. The whole caravan brought maybe 7 units of flux stone. The disappointment was great.

WanderedFences survived a 79 goblin/troll siege with one marksdwarf casualty. Things have mostly been quiet ever since. We have mined enough adamantine to give a select 5 dwarf melee squad adamantine helms and mail shirts. The rest is all steel. Cave crocs have laid eggs, but none have hatched yet. Our stores overflow with masterpiece roasts and a torrent of drink. The vast living areas are being smoothed. A drowning chamber has been constructed and holds the last of our unwanted trolls. (We have enough for the zoo.) We are just waiting for the river to thaw, and look forward to using it on the goblins.

I'm not too sure what to do now. I have prepared a simple arena for the clowns. My military would stand no chance against them head-on, but if I can isolate them in groups, we might be able to take them on.

I got the no outpost liaison problem once, in a fort where my civ was definitely not extinct. It took 4 years before a new one came.

Yup, same here. Current fort took about 4 years to get a liaison.

Why are humans banned from steel making when the Romans made steel over 1000 years before the game's 1400 technology cutoff?

Why, because this isn't earth, of course!

And they aren't banned from making it, they simply don't know how.

How do we assign war animals to dwarves now? V, prf screen, from what I understand the option should be there. All I can choose is slaughter, or geld for males.

I had just defeated a sieging force of 79 goblins and trolls, and was mass-hauling items when a were-koala arrived. Before I could kill it, it slaughtered my legendary armorer :(

I supposed I'll just dig a pit and throw them in there. They can limp around with whatever injuries that gives them forever. Maybe I'll make it next to the mayor's office and put windows in. That'll do until I get something fun like a minotaur, and can make it a labyrinth to drop goblins into.

So um, my dwarves killed a FB made of "filth". I got to wondering, what is "filth"? Is it something like rotten meat, bones and mud? Or is it poo? Or is there poo in there too? Is there any official definition of filth? Did my dwarves kill a poo man? This is important.
