DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:36:16 pm »
I'm looking thru legends at a virgin world I made, 1050 years of history.

In 215, a dwarf civ attacked a goblin civ. The attackers had 2,283 dwarves, 200 humans, 5 elk birds and 5 cave crocodiles. The defenders had 12 goblins and 2 trolls. Dwarven casualties? 2,192. Goblin casualties? 12...

"Defender was victorious."

...HOW??

Edit: The first THREE battles were all like this. Thousands of troops in the dwarf/human army, killed and defeated by about a dozen goblins and a troll or two, with a couple survivors, and the defenders win and inflict massive casualties. It wasn't until the fourth battle that over 2,500 attackers killed all 19 defenders, while taking almost 2,300 casualties. There were no defenders after this, and the dwarves installed a new government.

Edit 2: I've never looked this deeply into legends before, so maybe all battles go like this? Nope, another war against the same goblin civ hundreds of years later shows thousands of attackers defeating a handful of defenders with no, or very few, losses. Man, those dwarves SUCKED!

Did the goblins have a demon?

The only defending goblin forces were small numbers of goblins and ogres.

Right, the volcano/river embark just wasn't working out. embark area was too big, resulting in a slow FPS. Plus, I want a river that freezes in winter and shallow metals, close to a goblin tower. Time to gen a new world.

I made a new world and started a fort at the base of a volcano, with a river nearby. Currently trying to figure out how to harness the river's water. I dug a channel and have water available down in my fort, but it drains. so. *slowly*. It will take forever to get water from this thing.

Sounds like a hard fought battle. How did you avoid a fatal tantrum spiral after losing ~30 dwarves at once?

I got bored of having very few sieges, no river to play with, and almost no surface animals, so I took my military force of about 18, recruited 20 more and gave them random weapons, and sent them deep into the earth, positioned in a smallish room. Then, the adamantine was breached.

Many creatures made of salt, snow, steam, ash and fire poured forth. A beast made of steam was quickly dispatched, when one made of ash easily destroyed an inexperienced recruit's brain. The more experienced dwarves were able to put it down, when they were swarmed. Hammers swung, axes slashed, spears stabbed. one by one the unnatural abominations fell, over a dozen, when the king was bested by a towering blob of salt. it broke his spine and sent him flying.

15 abominations ended, 2 dwarves dead.

One of my spearmen is injured and falls unconscious. The fell beasts deliver many blows to the head, but her adamantine helm is keeping her alive for now. Or, it was until she bled out. The king suffocates, more death occurs.

24 abominations ended, 6 dwarves dead.

The room is full of fire, smoke, steam, blood and vomit. Many dwarves lose their resolve and try to flee. Many more are struck down.

27 abominations ended, lost count of dead dwarves.

The taint released from the pits quickly affects the fortress. A child in the dining room goes berserk and is quickly torn apart by animals. Another abomination is ended, but the troops have lost hope and ran. More dwarves succumb to madness as child after child begins tearing into everyone in reach. The abominations burst into the fortress proper, and the slaughter is immense. Dwarves fall by the dozens, though they surprisingly manage to kill a few more of the elemental monsters. Finally, two dwarves remain. The newly elected mayor, who decided this crisis would be a good time to seize the position, and an animal caretaker who decided a nap was in order. Both are behind closed doors, but it is only a matter of time... Ah, yes, the caretaker was just kicked to death. That just leaves the mayor, who refuses to leave the office. Oh, good, she left and bumped into an enormous winged scaly earthworm with deadly blood. A swarm of monsters join in to pummel her into sweet, sweet release. About 37 monsters saw their end, after all was said and done. Of course, the rest now have the world as their playground...

The End

Can they be trapped as peasants? I'd put that fella on a chain if possible. He deserves to be on display, it'll make good full-moon amusement for the dwarves to watch. Or at least it will for the more disturbed individuals.

A goblin baby? Huh. Too bad you couldn't capture it.

I have a little labyrinth for our resident minotaur. He gets fed goblins every now and then. One such goblin was a thief that I forgot to strip of their possessions. The minotaur killed her, picked up one of her socks, and now wields it in combat against other goblins thrown to him. He chases them down, pummels them until they pass out from pain, and then the combat report is filled with pages and pages of the minotaur repeatedly whacking the goblin in the head with the sock until they eventually die.

Setting the chained occupant to "nothing" does result in a dwarf carrying a cage and placing the creature in it. Just another strange little quirk to remember, I suppose. Thank ya Loci.

Tedious, but it works. I released a goblin, and once he was caged, he was back on the list of creatures that could be chained again. When I moved him to his new chain, he disappeared from the list once more. Sounds buggy.

I currently have a chained goblin and minotaur in my Baron's office. They are making the liaison very uncomfortable, and I wanted to move them elsewhere, but they aren't showing up on the list of creatures to assign to a cage. What do I need to do to move these guys?

My baron has a chained minotaur in their office, and my melee squad is equipped with adamantine helms. I got a good feeling about things. It'd be nice to get another goblin siege.

Better be careful when hosting diplomats. I had a satyr chained in my duchess' quarters, until he got himself a name, by scoring enough goring attacks on a grabbed outpost liaison that the liaison passed out from pain. I don't know what diplomats' attitude is towards minotaurs, but i wouldn't bet a (willow puzzlebox) on a dwarf diplomat who decided to wrestle one of those. (O.k., maybe i would, because seriously, why would i want to keep a (willow puzzlebox)?)

That's awesome.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Dwarfing Music?

Honestly, I have listened to the included music for more hours than I care to remember. It just fits so well with the day-to-day activities of the fort. I'm gonna click on some of these links, though.

I don't know how well it fits, but I listen to Agalloch: Marrow of the Spirit for a lot of games. This one included, at times.

I like The Mantle most, but yes, Agalloch are pretty rad

The Mantle was the first album of theirs that I heard. It's fantastic, but all of their stuff is. I listen to it when doing everything from playing Dwarf fortress and Kerbal Space Program, to sorting boxes of coins. They go with everything.
