DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Dwarfing Music?
« on: February 22, 2014, 01:36:24 am »
Honestly, I have listened to the included music for more hours than I care to remember. It just fits so well with the day-to-day activities of the fort. I'm gonna click on some of these links, though.

I don't know how well it fits, but I listen to Agalloch: Marrow of the Spirit for a lot of games. This one included, at times.

Functional siege operators? You lucky devil. Best of luck capturing it!

My Baron has a naked goblin axe lord attached to a silver chain in his office. He is going to display all captured army leaders in such a manner. The civ tab shows them as having a general, war leader and law giver. I can only hope at least one shows up and gets caged.

An unremarkable dwarf just made an artifact scepter. I hoped for more useful artifacts. I have 13 now. A door, a ring, a crown, a toy axe, a figurine, a shield an earring, a millstone, a bed, two unusable picks and two scepters. The door, bed and especially shield are pretty neat, but a weapon would be really nice...

I finally got my first real goblin siege, 56 units composed of bowmen, spearmen, lashers and ogres, all led by a goblin axe lord. My military consists of one squad of 10 iron-clad dwarves, wielding iron shields, save for the captain of the guard. He wields an artifact dingo bone shield. Half have silver war hammers, half have iron spears. They are decent enough, but I had serious doubts about them being able to take on this siege by themselves. The entrance cage traps did a good job of thinning them out. I caught two ogres, 11 bowmen (one elite), 3 lashers, 13 spearmen and the axe lord.

With their numbers halved, they hesitated to continue despite almost reaching the end of my cage traps. The remaining ogres eventually got frustrated and charged, opening a path through the cage traps. That's when a dwarf began furiously pulling a lever up and down, over and over, triggering the iron spikes hidden in the floor to shoot up again and again. The ogres had their feet and legs broken, only to fall over and get perforated. Several more goblins lost their lives to the spikes, until several bowmen and lashers remained, along with a couple spearmen. I read some bad things about whips slicing through even steel armor like butter, but I figured this was as good as it was going to get. The squad readied themselves, and charged.

The battle was brutal. I was deeply concerned after one dwarf was quickly slaughtered by enemy whips, but the rest of the squad caught up and smashed the melee troops into green goo, blocking every arrow headed their way. When it was all over, two goblin bowmen and two goblin spearmen were all that remained, running in terror. The squad had lost a man, and another was injured and unconscious, but they had won. One goblin spearmen was injured, and trying to drag himself away. The squad caught up to him and, letting out all their anger over their fallen comrade, proceeded to smash and stab this goblin for 3 pages. The captain of the guard bit off his toe. They refused to simply put him down, grimly stabbing and smashing until he bled to death. Finally, their first real battle over, they returned to the fort.

The injured soldier has a broken right upper arm, right shoulder, right upper leg, left false ribs, and left upper leg. But, he just may survive. A random dwarf is also in the hospital after taking an arrow to the leg due to poor burrow layout. Very exciting stuff.

Sounds like they were in denial about it for a while. "Oh, little Urist is just off fetching a sock!" "Well, you never come around when he's here." "Oh, he'll be back any time now..."

A Draltha ripped off a hunter's right foot and left arm. She's doing okay now, and is in surprisingly good spirits. The Goblins finally launched their first small siege, they were easily defeated with cage traps and hammer/pike dwarves. The next batch of goblins to come will find a couple blind cave ogres at the bottom of their pit.

My dwarves are breeding like rabbits... Up to 263 dwarves now, 52 babies and 48 children. I have over 1.2 million wealth, and am finally starting to attract goblin kidnappers. We are at pace with the goblin civ, but hopefully that will change if I kill enough of these guys.

I love that question... Yes, she has legs.

I have told her to wear greaves. She is now wearing *only* greaves, and only when her one dwarf squad is set to "active", despite "inactive = uniformed".

EDIT: Fixed so that she wears the rest of her clothes too, but still only wears the greaves when set to active military duty.

EDIT: So the reason she isn't wearing any of the pants I'm making is because as soon as they are sewn together, a random baby snatches them up. I forgot, babies aren't going to be born with clothes... I must gather as much cloth as possible and mass produce pants! I have dozens and of naked babies and children... Oh dear. This fortress may fall due to a lack of pants.

Why did you have that as an option?

Because some things, like having a lever to open the door to certain death at the hands of unstoppable undead beasts, only looks like a bad idea in retrospect.

One of my three legendary miners has somehow lost her pants, and refuses to wear any that I have made. Apparently no pants are good enough for her delicate lowers, and she is very unhappy about this.

I pulled what I thought was the lever to open the drawbridge leading to the cavern. When I started getting spam about job interruptions, I learned that I had actually pulled the lever that released two yak thralls from their pit... Bye bye fortress.

I tend to be kind to my dwarves, especially when it comes to food/drink variety. As a home brewer, I enjoy the different brewing options. So, I try to brew as many different drinks as I can. I also try to give everyone their own bedroom, eventually. 3x2 minimum, with a bed and cabinet. The early dwarves get smoothed rooms. I also try to keep everyone safe from the evil dust that makes you break out in bloody blisters head to toe, and get temporary blindness and fever. The hunters still get caught in it from time to time though. I also bought some glass and keep different cloths on hand for moods. I lost one dwarf due to a lack of glass, and our failure to that dwarf was recorded on two artifacts(one was an image of him dead on an artifact, the other was an image of that artifact on another artifact), so that we never forget our responsibility to provide...

My fortress of well over 100+ dwarves is humming along. Most dwarves do nothing since they suck at everything.

We had a noteworthy event recently. I had a Cyclops show up. The alarm was sounded and everyone went running for the safety of the fort. I wanted to lure it inside and capture it in a cage, because who wouldn't want a pet Cyclops to throw prisoners to? Unfortunately, the Cyclops had other plans...

One of my hunters was so focused on hunting her prey, that she did not notice the danger. While she was firing on some animal, the Cyclops approaches from behind, grabs her baby, and starts grabbing limbs and snapping bones. It then punches this poor baby right in the head with enough force to send it flying off of her mother's back. Well, now momma's pissed. She wheels around and pincushions this Cyclops with a flurry of bone bolts. It is quickly overwhelmed, and succumbs to it's wounds. Unfortunately, that punch to the head tore apart the baby's upper spinal nervous tissue, and it suffocated shortly after the death of the Cyclops.

Turns out, the hunter is married to the mayor. He is currently "holding a meeting" with his wife, I imagine to console each other. Fortunately, they have 10 other children...

One of my dwarves made a cool lignite figurine called "Sadgleam". It's of a goblin killing a human in "The Searing Siege" less than 10 years ago. It's encrusted in gems and menaces with spikes of lignite and tiger bone. It has images of the first dwarf to die in the fortress, (failed mood due to lack of glass, melancholy) the founding of the fortress, and amazingly, an image of the artifact that the image is on... I get a headache just trying to imagine how he managed to do that. I also have a spiked dingo bone shield with an image of Sadgleam on it. The captain of the guard used it to kill a kobold, I imagine once the kobold saw the infinitely repeating image on the shield, he had a mental meltdown and was easy pickings. We still can't convince the captain to clean the blood off the shield... He says it gives it "character".

Everyone goes running when an evil dust cloud blows in, they don't want to break out in bleeding blisters head to toe, being temporarily blinded and running a fever, but that's about as exciting as things get around here. I was wondering why the goblins never sent an ambush or siege, or even a kidnapper... Turns out we are at peace with them. The only civs at war are the humans and goblins. The gobs haven't sent a caravan though... I'm bummed, I'l have to start some trouble with the elves, they haven't brought anything interesting other than a giant dingo anyway.

Human swordsman in a small world made of two human civs, one next to an elf civ in the north. Dunno how many goblin civs but I haven't had much trouble from them. I'm playing in the southern human lands. They have seen better days. All the fortresses are abandoned, and there are few towns after over 500 years. Still, my adventurer lives a relatively easy life. He travels with a hammer woman, killing were-men and the occasional vampire. There doesn't seem to be much else to do down here, so he may just retire.

I got ambushed by kobolds once. Two of them were running towards me. I bit the first one in the hand and shook it so hard that it ripped it off. I then grab the hand out of my mouth and threw it at his friend, striking him in the chest with so much force that it broke his ribs and shoved the broken splinters through his heart. He very quickly bled to death.
