DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

Loyalty cascades also have the side effect of, if you succeed in guiding the rebels to victory and exterminating all loyalists, causing the cascade to resume every time you get new migrants, as I'm pretty sure they come as loyalists by default since the new faction doesn't actually have establishments in existence yet.

So yes. Make this a new Feature.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to blind dwarfs
« on: April 22, 2013, 08:18:26 pm »
Without modding, it's all up to luck. I don't know if any non-random creature that has a blindness syndrome, and the only other option is having both eyes gouged out and surviving. Good luck with that happening in fort mode!

With modding, you can mod out the eyes altogether (which, as mentioned, hits across the board and makes job performance horrid, among other things), or you can create a new crop that has an ingestion syndrome that causes blindness. You could even make it temporary in that case, since you presumably have a renewable source of said crop.

Of course, you could just eschew ballistae altogether. Without a modding fix anyways, they're pretty abysmal, I've found. I've seen these things barely bruise targets, even when made of metal.

DF Modding / Re: [MODDING] 0.34. QUESTIONS THREAD

Feathers don't currently exist, but that doesn't mean you can't make them. I'm fairly certain that, if nothing else, you can just use it as an EBO. I don't know if you can just slap that into a body detail plan or not, though.

aaaaargh

so I've got a material emission interaction. Two of them, as a matter of fact. They use the same material, come from the same creature. One of them is of the type UNDIRECTED_VAPOR and the other is of type TRAILING_VAPOR_FLOW. However, whenever I use the second one, it causes the target to start melting, which is nice, but not the intended effect. I've played around with melting/boiling points, fixed temps, and no matter what I do, the trailing vapor flow causes melting--but not the undirected vapor. What gives? D:

But what if we WANT them to fight to the death?

Hey, it's good training for Horrorfailed :P

though I may or may not even get a turn, given that Andreus is up next. Hoooooo boy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Does a vampire need teeth to drain people?
« on: April 22, 2013, 04:39:34 pm »
I'm pretty sure that he can still suck blood, because he's only missing a few teeth, not all of them. There are six individual body parts that count as teeth--upper front, upper left, upper right, lower front, lower left, and lower right. If you remove all of them, he can't bite at all. My initial thought was that didn't necessarily need "teeth" per se, as long as you had an attack with SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BLOOD, but a quick look at the vampire interaction in \data\interaction examples didn't actually give me any hints--perhaps the generated raws that I can't actually see without some wizardry have this in them, but I'm not sure.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: April 22, 2013, 02:12:41 am »
Been genning a few worlds to get some data on my own modded race. One of their features is a third caste that is a one in a million birth chance, and the only caste eligible to rise to the throne. I made them super powerful, so they shouldn't be dying, but I've been seeing some of them die off in worldgen lately.

However, that's not the best part. The best part is that I saw one of them listed with the BEST DEITY EVER.

Quote
Four was a deity that occurs in the myths of The Praised Domination. Four was most often depicted as a female Spawn of Violet and was associated with suicide and death.

It's funny because, well, in several Asian languages (notably japanese) the word for 4 is pronounced (nearly) identically to the word for death.

EDIT: I genned their language using Talvieno's DFLangCreate. A little digging shows that the word "four" in their language translates to "grave" in common. BEST FUCKING DEITY EVER.

759
Good lord. This is glorious.

I might have to hang around the lower boards a bit more often if such gems as this are the norm. (Or at least slightly more frequent than, say, epic flying shitstorms >.<)

Definitely PTW. I am most pleased to know of the existence of the UPR, and will subsequently undergo great awesome at its behest.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Post flooding quantum items

Coupled with the inability to hit the broadside of a barn at point blank

Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot that ballistae in this version are like squeaky rubber hammers. Derp.

I wonder if there's a way to mod ballista parts to actually not suck? They should be in the raws as an item file somewhere....

761
Y'know, what the hell. Stick me on the end of the turn list. Just in case we get a masterwork quality string of overseers vanishing due to RL obligations and the like, or in the event people actually take turns, I'll have a proper fortress to get my evil, evil little hands all over and ruin horribly in another hilarious cataclysm manage.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress' UI: I kinda like it?
« on: April 21, 2013, 04:43:38 pm »
The only thing I personally have issues with is the labor designation. Table-based input needs, absolutely needs, to be implemented in vanilla DF, and I mean outside of Dwarf The Rapist or DFhack.

763
Eh. I don't exactly approve of making a side jab at "videogame purists" (whatever the fuck that means), but I do have to agree, the in-game labor manager is nineteen different levels of premium grade shit. Just the simple fact that in-game you have no way to know how many guys are assigned a particular labor is bad enough--and before anyone mentions the [z] stocks screen, no, that doesn't count, since it categorizes dwarves by their highest skill, and not what labors they have enabled. A legendary Fish Dissector with no labors enabled other than mining would be listed as a fish dissector, which is clearly not his de facto profession.

Though I do agree that narcissists other than me should be punched in the face.

764
Or just play in ascii. >.>

Honestly, excepting the first week or so when I was adjusting to the switch from graphics to ascii, I had an easier time reading the game in ascii than in tilesets. At the bare minimum, it prevents the text from being garbled garbage.

765
It'd have to be added to a body part, not the dwarf itself.

Lol, I definitely meant, add it to the teeth. Herp, derp.

But yeah. You might get some weirdness, but it's either, deal with the weirdness, deal with not being able to grasp, or jump in magma and pass the save along.
