don't tell me SEAL are hard to recruit. 10 Business + 12 Science + 7 Religion + 21 Psychology + 12 or so Liberals + Expensive Props does the trick

Ohh yeah totally easy... >_<
Seconded.  "Hmm.  10 Biz, yeah, my bakers have that already.  12 Science, OK, throw a lot of money at the Uni.  7 Relig, well, it's not like the brownies are *that* cheap.  I can afford two people taking classes & cross-training.  21 Psych?! OK, how many low-level Conservative lives do I have to hijack to grind up that high?  and do all 12 Liberals need those stats??"

I'd point out that interrogating Conservatives is something that I'd do only if it was done to my people first.  Even then it'd be a stretch.  Much prefer to break out the Seduction instead--becoming Liberal should feel good, IMO.

Well, IIRC the Backer List was intended to let people nonviolently eliminate the CCS...so if it didn't eliminate them, it kinda wouldn't be doing its job.

I'd imagine they could still do some damage in a year's time--even three or six months seems like a long while for me--so I'd be inclined to leave it as is.

(I thought it was in the Supercomputer...but hadn't yet gotten a hacker up to 8-10 Computers to go find out.  Training the Disguise/Stealth/Lockpicking is easy, IMO.)

Hmm.  If I was doing a combat game, I'd want points in Dodge.  Uni trains that via Gymnastics class; one can raise Persuasion reasonably well by just finding Hippies, Prostitutes, or Mutants (if in the Nightmare) and talking about the issues.  Every time your meeting goes well, that's Persuasion XP.  Probably slower than the Uni, but it's not as though one's short on time at the beginning.

High Stealth works great; once you have a point, it levels up in site actions reasonably well.  I'd still suggest training Disguise alongside it & dressing for Disguise--if the unthinkable happens and they see through your Stealth, Disguise can still blend you in and save Alarm problems.

Secrecy is a function of where you are (richer neighborhood=higher secrecy Apartment), what's there (Business Fronts and Flags are extremely worth the money) and how many people you have there (more than 4-5 and apartments start breaking down; abandoned buildings can handle 10 or so without too many problems, IIRC).

One thing I just remembered: Every November (specifically, the month change from October to November) the population directly votes on laws; simple majority passes them.  October is a great month to break things loose; after the elections, there won't be anything important until end of Jan/Feb (Supreme Court action, IIRC) of the next year, so you could even run people through the legal system afterward.

Hoping all this helps.

OK, so tagging during a site visit does do something worth the pile of Vandalism charges.  Hadn't ever gotten that far when I still tagged.  Will check that out--Liberals support legalizing marijuana, not crack.

Thanks for the advice.

Well, sleeper lawyer did give the Courthouse map when I took it (first run), so not a bad tradeoff.  Having a Romantic Interest slooowly raises Seduction so there's that going for it too.

What buildings are included in the map package?

For that matter, does the Gang Member start give control of the Crack House from the start, or start the player in one of the abandoned buildings?  If the crack house, that's a decent argument in favor of it--have a third upgradeable safehouse w/o having to kill for it in-game.  (I try to keep the violence to the CCS and safehouse-defense.  Less legal/ethical problems that way.)

I'm fond of the stealthy approach: train people for Disguise & Stealth at the Sweatshop (where Naked is Disguise-compatible) and you can find Cloth and Workers to make disguises.  The Work Clothes allow raiding the factories, Black Robe is good for the Courthouse (as well as giving a Stealth bonus, so helps training Stealth) and the Lab Coat lets you in the University labs & the nuke plant.

You'll need some Security to do any of this properly.  Fortunately, once you have someone with it (several A answers during character creation give a point of Security, or find someone who can help), one can grind it up reasonably quickly by going to apartment complexes & picking the doors.  Move to wealthier neighborhoods once you're routinely opening each door, and by the time you're beating the Downtown apartment, you should have little to no problems with doors.

Sweatshop: immigrant rights, worker rights, maybe pollution(?); Cloth enables cost-effective disguise-making and sells OK itself
Factory: worker rights, pollution; chemicals don't sell well but smashing the machinery boosts Juice reasonably well
Courthouse: Liberal Judges, some other issues too; selling loot works well
Labs: Animal testing/genemod food, respectively; freeing caged creatures gives Juice rapidly, loot sells well

Once your Disguise & Stealth are in good shape, you should be able to afford a pickup truck or New Beetle.  The pickup gives +1 to Driving so it may be worth the extra $2000.  (Four unloaded M16s will pay for the difference, and M4s are better anyway.)  Then you can grab a Black Robe and stealth through the Army base until you find army-armor; equip to disguise, and you'll not need to buy assault rifles ever again.

Curses / Re: Heat and Sieges in 4.06.3

OK, that helps.  I had a founder in the previous version who (after printing Secret Documents every November for four years and hacking the CIA supercomputer once) simply couldn't stick around in anything less than 75% secrecy.  We'd butchered the CIA raid, incidentally, and afterward they didn't come back for more.  [Pity, that.]

Now, Treason/Espionage does seem like something that should generate long-lasting heat, but agreed that "forever" is too long.  So far, heat decay seems like a good idea and reasonably implemented.  Thanks for the new version as well as the insight into it.

Question, semi-related: I've printed piles of corporate files, raided the HQ and the CEO house routinely (50 Juice for safecracking is my favorite way to level up Commandoes and higher),  and never had a mercenary raid.  Ever.  In either version.  How does the game decide who to send after a safehouse?

Raids to date: 1xCIA (surprise, fought), ~3xSWAT (all warned and evaded), 1xFireman (warned from nowhere and fought) in the old version; 1xFireman (surprise, fought) in 4.06.3.  Mercs &the CCS don't seem to want me that badly, I guess?

Well, Vandalism charges do not generate heat, IIRC. It just causes troubles at the trial. Also, tagging the Vegan Co-op and the Juice bar is a pretty fast way to get a liberal to 50 juice, where they could recruit another one.
"Join us to Liberally redecorate your Co-Op!"
"Wow, man, you really know how to use a spray can."
After some discussion, Hippie agrees to come by later tonight.

Good to know about the vandalism charges--I know there's some sort of metric for what generates heat but wasn't sure what did or did not.  Probably posted somewhere and I either didn't see or forgot about it.

How about spraying LCS tags? I haven't played LCS for a year now, but i remember it was a safe way to get juice up to a certain level.

Tagging is low-risk--granted--but one Juice for one count of Vandalism, and the only skill boosted is Art, which one can more safely train by selling art.  If I'm going to get charged with Vandalism (which could be a problem if the Death Squads are around), might as well free animals or smash machinery for 3-5 Juice and the Security & Disguise/Stealth training in the process.

Only way I know to Juice whilst maintaining a clean rap sheet is to petty-steal without witnesses.  Killing Conservatives in a place that won't report it is better, but generally isn't reliable.

Hmm.  The get-Beetle option is an A choice, so it's in the Thief line, true--but I've heard the phrase "got my hands on" to mean legitimate acquisition as well as shady acquisition.  Players who aren't paying attention to that sort of theming or who haven't read the wiki might not be pleased to find their car is stolen.

If the car is considered stolen, probably best to make that clear to the player.  Something like "A) I "borrowed" someone's old Beetle and my chop shop friends helped me fix it up.  It runs great!" seems adequate.

Hackers being charged with kidnapping has already been fixed in a previous revision. You can download and compile the source to get the fix, or wait until the next release. Thanks for the bug report, though!

Thanks, but I've had bad luck with compiling games in the past.  Will wait for the next release.  I guess I'll have to cross-train the hackers for self-defense in the legal arena too, not just the physical.

Well, maybe I can help here?

One way I found to Juice w/o gaining charges (because in my--limited--experiences, charges = Heat) is to do site raids and stick to petty theft.  Slow but relatively safe, even in Nightmare Mode.  Since petty theft doesn't generate newspaper articles, I don't think it affects the CCS startup either if that's a concern.

Go around picking locks (NOT breaking down doors), grabbing things that aren't nailed down and aren't being watched*, optionally drop pickup lines or talk about the issues, and start leaving when the Conservatives get suspicious.  Every item picked up=1 Juice for everyone in the squad, up to 200 Juice.

*If there's an encounter present, picking locks or taking things can set off the Conservative Alarm (bad), Alienate the moderate Masses (really bad), or even provoke a Liberal to cry for help (I guess xe wasn't Liberal enough?).  Taking goods in particular will add a Theft charge to the taker, generally the first person in the squad.  Stealth skills can help avoid raising the alarm, but not the Theft charge.  Best to wait for the coast to clear.

At 200 Juice, there's no way I know of to keep a character Juicing without at least racking up Theft charges, unless you have a safehouse that can be raided repeatedly (yours or Theirs).  Killing Conservatives in their safehouse (you'll know if it's a safehouse--they're clearly marked in the destination list) doesn't count for Murder charges, and killing at least the CIA or Firemen at your safehouses didn't count for Murder in the last version.

(I've read something about characters gaining Juice because someone below them Juiced enough to level up.  I've never noticed that sort of thing making a significant contribution to my people, but then I don't track my hierarchy that thoroughly.)

Apologies--reason for delurking is a bugcheck.

I had a few hackers hacking away in the 2d CCS safehouse*, and checked on them to find that they'd all gotten charged with Kidnapping.

*After we'd taken it, and the heat had decreased to 0.  In case it mattered, I talked to some people residing in the similarly-Liberalized Bar & Grill about the issues and had recruited them, but I doubt that qualifies as Kidnapping them, even if we started using it as a safehouse.

Everyone who had been hacking over the past few weeks had gotten a count of Kidnapping, but I'd not sent them out to a site, much less taken any hostages.  (Haven't taken any that entire game, in fact.)  Suspecting it's one of the new hack-results, and I've preserved the file if sending it might be helpful.

Thanks for your time and consideration--though I think I might modify the XMLs.  (Need to be able to buy Vans, and they need to come in Green.)  Apart from these minor nitpicks, much appreciated.  The new buildings are worthwhile.
