Other Games / Front Mission 3
« on: December 20, 2020, 07:54:26 am »
Anyone remember Front Mission 3 from the old PS1? Customise mechs, blow up other mechs, use missiles. Two campaigns that you unknowingly get locked into from the first seemingly unimportant decision. Fun story. Punch tanks with your giant axe, etc.

I was replaying it lately and got to a mission I'd never seen before. FM3 is a relatively serious game (you are trying to find a superweapon to prevent further international wars ofc) ...until now.

You end up at a farm, when this crazy old guy (who demands everyone to call him 'master') and his family, including kids, uncles, and grandma that all try to kill you using homemade trucks on metal chicken legs called 'methane wanzers' while sheeps are running around. You guessed it, the wanzers are powered by sheep shit. There's a pink knight mech and a butler mech (which can actually fight). The homemade mechs die in one hit and explode violently. You punch grandma with an axe, grandma doesn't even know what button makes the mech go. Bye grandma. It's... wtf.

Not sure how I got to this point. I was semi-convinced I'd broken the same like how you can turn to 'what if mode' on the original Spiderman. But... I found it was because I apparently didn't blow up half of the convoy in previous mission, which branched the game to another choice (and as a side effect you don't get a certain character for another 30 missions or so, wtf?) So I'm guessing the whole thing is basically a 'haha, fuck you' to anyone who partially fails the previous mission. It's weird.

Also, grandma survives btw. I was so worried about this but after the battle in the next cutscene everyone is alive again. ;_; which again, is weird for such a dark game that is full of war, character death, supernukes, torture etc.

If anyone can tell me how to get more than a silver star each mission it would be appreciate. Or any way to reduce pilot ejection chance 'cause that is happening way too much.

Creative Projects / National Novel Writing Month 2020 (NaNoWriMo)
« on: November 06, 2020, 11:13:18 am »
No nanowrimo thread on bay12? For shame guys.

I am doing ok so far this year but the inevitable week 2 slump is on the horizon. Writing fantasy/dieselpunk with splotches of sci-fi.

They revamped www.nanowrimo.org to a new form which is a bit confusing at first, but allows the ability to create projects year-round and to record their progress. Very useful!

Anyone else doing the month of writing madness?

Infos for the confused:

What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo is an informal challenge to anyone who wants to write.  The idea is simple: you simply have to write 50,000 words of a story during the month of November.  You don't necessarily have to finish the story, so long as you write that many words, and it doesn't matter what the story is.  This isn't going to be published anywhere without you doing it, so it can be fanfiction for all that the challenge cares.

The point is to just get words down.  A lot of writers agree that this is the hard part, and you can easily get stuck trying to edit or world build.  From experience, I can say that it's very true, and anyone who wants to give this a shot is strongly encouraged to not fret about the quality of your work and just focus on getting a first draft down.  I did last year and hate how it turned out, but I'm still glad I did it since it puts me in a better place to try it this year.

Is this a competition?
Not really.  You're only challenging yourself.  You can certainly compare your progress to others, but it's informal and you won't get anything but a warm, fuzzy feeling for beating someone else.

Is my writing safe?
Sure.  You don't have to publish anything you write, and nanowrimo.org just has a tool for inputting word counts.  They have a word count utility as well, which supposedly scrambles the text so that nobody could possibly steal it, but in seriousness there's no reason to be afraid of whatever you're writing getting out in the wild without you doing it.

Can I win anything?
Only personal satisfaction, which is a surprisingly good thing in my experience.  Supposedly you can get some discounts on software or other sponsored goodies if you "win" by hitting 50K words, but I don't actually know how this works.  I "won" last year, but didn't investigate that part.

Can't I just cheat and enter whatever I want in the word count tool then?
Sure, but you're only cheating yourself in the end.  The whole point is to make something of your own and prove to yourself that you can do it.

Advice:

The writer's natural tendency is to eat their (written) child moments after its birth is complete. Unfortunately, that child must be raised (editted) and not eaten.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Turning off ghosts/hauntings
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:28:14 pm »
Is this doable yet? Imo it's just a pain to have to build a bunch of coffins and designate them etc, building slabs when your dwarves 'go missing', having your furniture battered by poltergeists etc.

How do?

Shudder in terror, for the National Novel Writing Month approaches.

I made this thread in advance 'cause it's usually good to get some preparation done.

Old threads: 2014 2013 2012

Getting a wee bit too close to November for comfort now - can't really put off planning any longer. I don't know if you guys prefer pantsing, but I get completely lost without at least an outline for this thing.

So... What're you guys doing for this year? Are you doing it this year? I remember we had an IRC room, but I forget the details of it. Word wars helped so much last year imo.

I'm gonna write a thing about feuding thieves and knights cause apparently there isn't anything but that kind of sludge in my head. Woo~

Masterwork DF / Surviving Masterwork?
« on: October 24, 2013, 08:00:09 am »
How?! I do fine for the first year. Making food from farms is a little harder, sure, but it generally goes well. Opening the first cavern almost ensures death. Invaders quickly come and ensure death. My rag-tag militia can't stand up to three squads of goblin aim-for-ya-throats. Or worse - everything seems fine. I'm finally getting tree farms going, and bedrooms hollowed and smoothed. Then "Your fortress has crumbled to it's end" by some creature that killed everyone within about half a minute of me failing to notice.

Masterwork is just ridiculously hard compared to Vanilla DF, to me. Are there any options that make it easier - or better still, some "must do" strategies for surviving? i.e getting a metal industry up and running immediately, and putting half of your dwarves into the military? I don't want to go to the extreme of walling off my fortress with bridges and wall grates, because it feels a little cheaty. Though lately it seems like this is the only way to survive as dwarves fall like wheat before a scythe and the resultant tantrum spirals destroy what's left of the fortress.

Halp.

Other Games / The Cat Lady
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:57:26 pm »

Not sure if there has been a thread here yet, but I just discovered this amazing game.

The Cat Lady (TRAILER) is a horror/adventure game about a woman that lives alone, with her cats (funnily enough), unemployed, alone, no reason to live. In the opening scene of the game she commits suicide. She wakes up in a strange world where an old woman (The Queen of Maggots) sends her back to exact vengeance on "Parasites", various serial killers that are running around the city. The game is heavy on the story but has the puzzle elements of a point-and-click game (though all on the keyboard). Great voice acting, soundtrack and amazingly creepy atmosphere. Kinda like Silent Hill crossed with The Crimson Room. Don't play the game in the dark... just don't.

It's only for windows though I've heard it works on mac. There's a few Let's Play walkthroughs of it on youtube too if that's your thing. The game is mostly story so you don't miss out on much but the puzzles and alternate choices.

Quote from: Official Game Description
The Cat Lady is a new, critically acclaimed horror adventure game by designer R. Michalski (Author of Downfall, 2009). A gripping story, pumping soundtrack, high-resolution artwork and voice acting will engross you on your journey through the strange and often terrifying world of The Cat Lady.

Susan Ashworth, known in her neighbourhood as the crazy Cat Lady, is a lonely 40-year old on the verge of suicide. She has no family, no friends and no hope for a better future.

One day she discovers that five strangers will come along and change everything... But those five, "The Parasites", are also the most ruthless, deranged and cold-blooded bunch of psychopaths the city has ever known. They will stop at nothing to hurt Susan. Unless, she hurts them first...

Creative Projects / NaNoWriMo 2012
« on: October 08, 2012, 06:02:54 am »
Who's mad enough to try another stab at NaNoWrimo this year? I remember several from Bay12 doing it last year, didn't we have an irc channel for wordwars and general rambling? I didn't get anywhere near finished last time, but maybe 2012 is the year to go gold.

In case this is new and confusing to anyone:

NaNoWrimo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and is this increasingly huge community-driven contest/challenge to write 50,000 words, a novel, in the month of November. There's great resources and tools on the actual site, and real-life gatherings in most major cities where you can go and write, talk about writing, and imbibe ludicrous quantities of coffee and tea.

But hang on... November is 3+ weeks away! Why am I jumping the gun with this post?

Planning. I'm sure loads have started Nano on the day, or even day two or three and still finished. But if you have time to think about what you're writing and properly plan it out, it's a lot less headache inducing than getting to page 54 and trying to find the PERFECT name for the supersecret hidden castle of doom that houses the main antagonist. After 73 hours of sleep deprivation and a 3-quart mug of java.
