I just started a new fortress on a Taiga. My dwarves were clearing trees to build (aboveground fortress) when suddenly about a hundred black dots swarmed the screen. I thought it was some sort of Dwarven apocalypse or something, but when I looked closer I realised they were just bats. Lots of bats. Bats everywhere.


My dwarves don't seem to mind though... Oh well. One of the stranger things I've seen in DF, if you're looking at the small pile of 'non-violent' peculiarities.


Edit:  SO MANY BATS! They came down just after I dismantled the wagon and moved the food to the stockpile. Maybe that's what's drawing them? They're only swooping around the area I cleared and began to build on. There's so many bats I think it's actually slowing down the game D:


Can I turn them into bat stew somehow?

Damn, Toady really ramped up the attacks in this version... in the first year I got four ambushes from kobold thieves, at the beginning of the second year, two ambushes of about 10 goblins each. I have no military. I'm going to diieeeeee. Edit: omg, my whole fortress was annihilated in 30 seconds

Takes only 4 rocks to dispose of excess waste.<P>Turn 3 of the rocks into mechanisms. <BR>Use the final one to make a 2-tile bridge that raises to one side.<BR>Connect a lever to the bridge next to it.<BR>Restrict the two tiles of the bridge to avoid dwarf-crushing.<BR>Make the tile of the bridge that raises a dump area.<BR>Dump your waste.<BR>Pull the lever.<P>

I think it'd be a nice addition if DF had more than about 8 base colours. All the ones in descriptor_color_standard.txt actually being coloured into the game would be great. It would be easier to tell the materials of items. Just now orthoclase and gold is the same colour, and there is no difference between brown stone and wood. The colours are already in the init files...

The Fortress' prime purpose is the export of fine exotic specialty meats and meals to the surrounding dwarven and human empires. I'll post more screenshots as the game unfolds..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Do you farm?

I find farming in DF makes the game far too easy. One dwarf can feed 15 through farming, cooking and brewing indefinitely. Where's the danger of trying to kill giant cave spiders for meat or tackle giant pike in the river?

Just looking for opinions   :)

On a map without an aquifer, with the only water source being dried up mud... How can I find water for my Dwarves to drink? Or will they have to live on alcohol?  :(

Running around. On the grass. They already slaughtered a carpenter and 5 war dogs.

I know that ponds won't refill, dwarves won't get a bad thought from rain, magma is less dangerous. Though what does turning these things off negatively effect? Wondering if the FPS gain is worth it.

Mason cancels Construct Building: Creature Occupying Site.


There's two spots where I'm trying to build walls on, and I repeatedly get this error though there's nothing on the tile. I tried re-designating multiple times, but it just gets to "almost completed" then it's suspended. If I un-suspend it, dwarves just mill around it forever.


The two tiles are at the entrance of the fort, the only empty spaces in the fortifications and wall. I uploaded a save..
