WIDEmouth bass? Never heard them called that before and I've been fishing since I could hold a pole. As expected, Bill's an alcoholic. :P

Wikipedia says: "The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is a species of fish in the sunfish family. It is also known as widemouth bass..."

But then I'll be the first to admit that I'm no fisher. I have heard them called that though, and it may just be because I live in Texas.

Thus: could I claim a survivor? Preferably a social one, but the only real selection criteria would be ardent worship of Tequil.

Sturm if male, Cynn if female.

So far, the camp is shockingly atheistic. Not one of the unclaimed survivors is an ardent worshipper of anybody. The closest match I found was a faithful worshipper of Tequil, but it turned out to be Okenido's son (who also like zip guns, and prefers to consume leopard and swamp whiskey). Since he's less than a year old, I don't think he'd make a very good religious fanatic.

Once I get some new migrants, I'll check again and see if any crazy priests decided to tag along.

The Events of November 30th, 2019
It was a little past one in the afternoon. The survivors were slowly filtering out of the camp's mess hall, heading back to their work. Bill stumbled drunkenly towards the lake. He had downed nearly a gallon of vodka, his usual ration. His alcohol-soaked mind tried to form thoughts of widemouth bass, but failed. A shrill whistle suddenly cut through the air. Bill looked up, and saw Indri standing on the ramparts above him. "Whuh...that lady flying...?" was his last coherent thought before he collapsed snoring on the ground.

Indri looked down over the camp, whistle in hand. The survivors looked up at her nervously. Normally the whistle was reserved for Jenn's use only, in case of an Infected attack. Indri held out a long, thin stick which appeared to be some kind of weapon. "Listen up, you screwheads!" she shouted. "Out past that wall waits an enemy we know all too well. We've all lost family or friends to them. They will not stop coming until every last one of us is dead. It's up to people like us to take charge and make a difference. You have a choice. You can sit here and play house, or you can get up here and fight!" The crowd stared blankly at her. No one said a word. Indri sighed. "Let me spell it out for you then. This..." she said, holding out the weapon "... is my BOOMSTICK." With that, she loaded a shell into the chamber, and with one smooth motion spun around and fired a slug into the brush. An Infected who had been standing behind some bushes fell forwards, a gaping hole in its head. "Wiping out the Infected is the only hope we have left. Ya got that? Now get the hell up here, and let's kick some Infected ass!" As she spoke, the sounds of groaning filled the air. Drawn by the gunfire, Infected poured out of the bushes from every direction. Indri yanked a tarp off a heap next to her on the ground, revealing a stack of what was unmistakably homemade shotguns. The survivors cheered and clambered up onto the ramparts. Dohon rushed back and forth handing out weapons to the eager survivors, juggling three shotguns under each arm. The survivors enthusiastically blasted away at the horde milling mindlessly below. The roar of gunfire echoed through the mountains. Before long, the battlefield was covered in a huge cloud of dust, thrown up by the impacts of thousands of slugs. The survivors watched with bated breath as the wind began to blow the dust away. When the cloud had settled, they saw that the ground was covered with Infected corpses stacked three high. Not a single one moved. The survivors let out a cheer. "And that's what's waiting for the rest of those bastards too!" Indri shouted.

There was a party held later that evening in Indri's honor. The survivors nearly depleted their supply of vodka.

Votes are in! The final score:

Ein - 4
Jenn - 4

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Tower Fortress Succession Game

I'll take a turn. Do we have a map location already? Also, how long do we have to complete each turn?

51
Bob is friends with Louis, Ein, both the Earls, Jenn, Gaweir, and Bill.

Just a reminder, council elections end at midnight tonight. Send in your votes people!

DF General Discussion / Re: Show grid size when resizing?
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:42:04 am »
Maybe even an option to always show grid size somewhere on the screen? Either that, or a new menu screen that shows miscellaneous technical information, including grid size.

53
Is Uci a loner too?

Uci is friends with Deathlord, Gaweir, Okenido, Louis, Jenn, and Ein.

What's with the looong tunnel and then the tower designated that has no stairs yet?  Making a guardpost?

I'm curious about Fenner's relationships/religion, as well, now that everyone else is asking.

Also, if anyone wants it/them, I did this to the graphics set.  The most important thing by far is Infected torsos (Although I don't feel comfortable working with the original graphics style enough to make fancy torsos for that version, same with the Brutes and Bloaters).

Yep, the tunnel is a guardpost.

Fenner has no friends, and worships Batow (female, trade).

Those graphics are awesome!  :o You should definitely post them in the zombie mod thread for others to use. I'll probably put them in this story once I upgrade to 40d12.

I was thinking... We haven't seen one of the elements that tend to come up in zombie-media yet. Religious fanatics!

I'm liking this idea. ;D I will add your survivor with the next story update.

By the way, I won't get into a rant, because I do happen to agree with 'Tanks plus fucking nukes equals dead zombies before the shit hits the fan' thing, but yeah. Some how the military might of the United States Military wasn't enough for a few million rotting meat sacks with no weapons or armor what so ever.

The zombies are indeed Romero zombies in that they rise even from non-infected corpses. Whether this is for paranormal reasons or otherwise is one of the plot points that will eventually be revealed. How the US military managed to lose against brainless rotting corpses is another plot point that will become clear over time.

Here's the updated map: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-6171-ataleofzombiesstorymap

Dammit, now I have to try to make that rack mean something.

Yeah, I was pretty stumped about that too. It's made of leather, for god's sake.

Another trade caravan stopped by the camp today. This one was from a former military base west of here. As such, they had access to some high-quality weapons. We managed to trade them some clothing for a submachinegun and some armor, as well as a few wheels of cheese. Finally, something to put on the potatoes. Now if only we had salt and sour cream...

October 14th, 2019
A horde of Infected is passing through the area. We've had to seal up the base, which the military fellows aren't too happy about. A couple of them tried to make a run for it and were quickly devoured. Those who stayed inside assisted us in wiping the Infected out from the battlements. They don't seem to have much actual experience against the Infected. From what I gather, the area around their base is heavily booby-trapped, so it's rare that they actually come face to face against an Infected. Their weapons were much more effective than ours, though, and we were soon able to clear out the majority of the horde.

October 20th, 2019
We've enlisted some new recruits for the militia. Of them, one seems especially promising; a markman named Octavio. We'll have to see if he can prove himself in combat.

November 1st, 2019
Frances has created a somewhat disturbing piece of furniture for the barracks. It's a gun rack depicting brave heroes of the Survivor's Council shooting apart Infected. It seems to be helping morale though, so I'm all for it.

November 18th, 2019
We've begun expanding the underground sleeping quarters as part of the project to improve living conditions in the camp. The old barracks room was getting a little crowded with all the cots strewn everywhere. With the new extensions, everyone will finally get some privacy. We've also started thickening the walls to make sure no Infected get through.

The Events of November 25th, 2019
Indri flicked on the light in the workshop cautiously. No one had seen her slip out of the barracks and steal the materials from the storage shed. She had work to do tonight. Important work. She laid her equipment down on the workbench, pulled out a knife and a welder's torch, and began to work...

Hours later the sun was beginning to creep up through the windows. It was nearly 6 AM, but she had finally finished her masterpiece. It was a beautiful shotgun barrel, made of high-density polycarbonate and encrusted with precious gems. She had decided to name it Quemer Hethre, after the brave survivor who was one of the first to die at the camp while fighting the Infected. Once she'd found a stock to fit to the barrel, she was going to blow those Infected fu-... well... She was going to get her revenge. She quietly crept back into her room, laid the barrel behind a cabinet, and crawled back into bed beside Deathlord. He hadn't even stirred.

56
What relationships does Cranefly have?

He is utterly friendless. Also, he did get his cabinet (bauxite) and is currently waiting for it to be hauled to his room.

57
Are the cat and the kitten of differing genders?

Yes. I usually try and slaughter any uninterested kittens as soon as I notice them, to avoid catsplosions.

I'm a little curious, what relationships does Louis have?

He is friends with the original seven, as well as Bob, Expendable Earl, Pathos, Gaweir, and Bill.

I'm also curious, does pathos even HAVE any relationships beyond passing aquaintance? And what does the camp look like now?

Pathos actually has a lover, an unclaimed female refugee. Apart from that, he is friends with Okenido, Bob, Ein, Bill, Jenn, Indri, Louis, Earl (the student), and Gaweir.

I'll upload the map once I have time to write a couple journal entries regarding new features.

My character is seems to be married.

Yes, and churning out survivorbabies like there's no tomorrow.

DF Modding / Re: Restricting materials based on civ?
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:47:01 pm »
Actually, DNA sequencer was just was what I was calling it based the idea that his civ was genetic engineers. I didn't notice the "has no other technology" bit. It can really be called anything, I was just using that as an example.

Edit: I just discovered something while messing around in modding. If you remove pack animals from a civ, they will be unable to trade and won't send caravans to other races. This has obvious side-effects, but it completely removes access to the technology for other races.

DF Modding / Re: Xaque's Warhammer 40k Mod
« on: June 22, 2009, 03:23:53 pm »
Hmm... yeah... That's another problem, sometimes 40k canon contradicts itself. I think the solution of making bolters ultra heavy is my favorite so far. The IG codex does actually say that of the two-man teams, one carries the weapon and one carries the ammo, so I'm just gonna assume those big-ass weapons are made out of some kind of alloy that makes them lighter than they look.

I think catapults are hardcoded, even the name, but I'll look into it. I'm pretty sure I saw ballista ammo in the raws somewhere, so I'll try making those into something cool too.

EDIT: Although, come to think of it, this wouldn't prevent other races from buying/plundering such an item and using it in such reactions, would it? For instance, dwarves can't use pikes/whips/etc., but they can still acquire them, and could still use them in reactions if called for, couldn't they? I mean, it's still a step further in the right direction. There might not be a perfect way to pull this off.

Yes, that's true. There are a couple of solutions I've thought of. One is make it so the civ is always at war with everyone, or otherwise incapable of trading. If you give it a weird skill like [SKILL:SOAP_MAKING] then you should never see anyone wielding them in Fortress Mode, so you won't have to worry about them being brought along in sieges.

Another solution is to make the reaction consume the reagent, but make it so new ones are easy to produce (but only for that race). For example, if you made it a ranged weapon (something like [RANGED:SOAP_MAKING:BOLTS]), then you could make them in a bowyer's shop out of bone or wood. So you'd basically need one DNA sequencer or whatever for each reaction. Then, if a couple get traded to another civ, they could only make two or three bars of blubber. They wouldn't be able to mass produce it.

I guess it really depends on how they fit into your game world and how determined you are to stop other races from using them.
