Bear in mind that we are a few weeks from the launch of MegaMusic and MegaBox. MegaMusic was supposed to be a platform of distribution for the music produced by artists registered under the label MegaBox, which was announced as giving 90% of the retail title to the artist.

And guess who started the process ? Universal. As in Universal Music. What a surprise.

Anyway, I'm not versed at all in US right, but from the 10 pages or so that I have read this all sounds very tenuous. The only bad thing these guys are supposed to have done is:
Quote
"Since at least September 2005, Megaupload.com has been usedby the defendants and other members and associates of the Mega Conspiracy to willfullyreproduce and distribute many millions of infringing copies of copyrighted works."
But that is quite easily defendable, the owner of a platform being responsible only to an extent concerning what the users do. Plus they always ensured to do enough to respect the law, e.g. remove any link that was reported as copyrighted work.

All this mess just because these guys are accused. That's what I found mindnumbing. They haven't been declared guilty of anything, and here they are, arrested halfway across the world, their whole company taken down because of an accusation. That doesn't sound like presumed innocence to me.

Moreover, what is the role of an indictment exactly ? If it's supposed to guide the trial, it sounds like said trial has already happened.
Quote
"The defendants [...] were members of the “Mega Conspiracy,” a worldwide criminal organization whosemembers engaged in criminal copyright infringement and money laundering on a massive scale."

Isn't the role of this whole action to determine whether MegaUpload is a criminal group ? Plus, "Mega Conspiracy" ? Seriously ? Does EVERYTHING have to be marketable in the US ?

If the ripost is coming, I guess the real hackers are preparing for it.
However, hacking the websites of Universal would be much easier if they weren't being DDOS'ed. Just saying.

If they want DDOS to have an impact, they have to block access to all the online commerce when profits are going to Universal. For example, if Universal has artists selling songs on iTunes, they could take down iTunes. Block their selling platform would have an impact and can be done by something as simple as DDOS.

The real problem is that many companies around here, small and big, used MegaUpload as a way to put data, big files, records... With MegaUpload taken down, some are already talking about closing their company because they lost years of work.
Now, I wish I knew more about international law, but because all of this is happening in the USA, shouldn't the US law apply ? What I mean is, shouldn't EVERY company in the world who had sensitive files uploaded on MegaUpload be able to form one MASSIVE class action for getting their data back and ask a repayment for the damages ?

Most of the people who go on this site either think sopa is moronic or, like myself, live somewhere were corporate interests have slightly less of a stranglehold on government policy.

You're not out of danger. Most servers are located in the US. Google and Paypal are forced to cease cooperation with you if SOPA says so.

Ooh, yeah, hadn't thought of material weaknesses... But still, why does it affect targetting ? I'd expect it to affect the damage resolution. Maybe the targetting AI ?

Am I the only one worried by the sentence "Targetting [has gotten slow] too, in all modes, something to do with the werewolf/necromancer checks" ?

Not sure if it's too technical to be asked, but Toady : how can a necromancer line of sight affect a non-necromancer targetting something ? Do you mean targetting as in chosing which body part to attack or the "fire crossbow"-type targetting ? And finally, what do werewolves have to do with any targetting at all ?

DF General Discussion / Re: What % finished do you reckon DF is?

It's around a third done. If I Recall Correctly, the version number was supposed to be the percentage of how done is DF. So that'd be 31% for last release and a little more for the upcoming one.
But it's a little dubious since the scope of the game gets slightly larger as time goes by. Not much of an importance when you consider how huge DF aims to be, but still.

But that's just until version 1. DF won't stop there. So I guess we should consider how much of DF is done by estimating the remaining lifespan of Toady.

Once I had a swedish friend tell me the US citizens had the choice between rightwing and stupid rightwing. I let everyone assume which one is which according to his personal opinions :)
Plus, who really cares about who Toady votes for ? He's making an awesome game, that's all that counts.

One was where the creatures in the underground caverns/catacombs beneath a city could hear the humans above talking

Even RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY ! Can you believe that ? Never had such awful neighbors... I think I'm going to go upstairs and eat one or two of them to get the message across.

Toady, if there are vampires, and there are places in the world where it freely rains blood (human, elven or dwarven), wouldn't a vampire find more sense in going to such a place and living happily ever after rather than dangerously hunting other people while they sleep ?

Hmmm, I don't know if this has been asked yet, but do vampires necessarily require fresh blood? Of a sentient being? Because merchants have barrels and barrels of various types of blood, but I don't know a single use for any of it. Maybe I could, in future, stock up on it for the sake of my potential night-dwelling population?

I believe it's the actual drinking-warm-blood-from-a-sleeping-person thing that quenches the bloodthirstiness, not just ingestion of blood per se.

Yes, alright, but that seems cheap. Very cheap. I know for the time being it will be limited to drinking from sleeping people. My real question is : Is it intended for the vampire to only feed on living, fresh, same specie creature, even in the hypothetical version 1 ? In short, what is the final plan ?

a. Given that we're able to designate fortifications on constructed walls, are we at some point going to be able to engrave constructed walls and floors as well? I'd be really pleased about being able to do this.
Still not, no. The problems are still the same as before, and to prevent this thread to be derailed by another discussion on the subject please look one such discussion up.

b. I'm noticing right now that the randomly generated night beasts (like gloom creatures, horrors of evil, etc.) tend to heap death and destruction upon dwarven civilizations, leaving none of them with any living members until an enterprising player comes along with his newly-created seven dwarves and rebuilds dwarven society from scratch with migrant waves. Is this tendency going to be toned back in future versions?
The night creatures aren't responsible for this. Toady took the generation of dwarven cities out some time ago because the current progress conflicted with it; of course they'll be back after getting as much love as human cities. Perhaps a little less.

When you get to think of it, Murphy's law combined with quantum physics is quite an horrific idea.
You don't know ow much you're screwed until you try to know it, at which point you are sooo screwed.

Actually there was a time, not so long ago, where everybody would have been able to tell you about their families, and how their aunt opened some shop on the other side of the continent in 250... But after that there came to be so much people generated that the least important people had to be abstracted away for both memory and generation time issues.

So now, most commoners pretty much suffer from memory loss. Which I personnally see as a shame. I would like at the very least other answers than "I have no family to speak of", such as "Meh, it wouldn't interest you" or "Why would you want to know that ? Are you from that spanish inquisition ?".
The best would be for it to be generated when you ask, but hey, more important people have their stories.

It's kind of an interesting insight of the typical DF society. "My boy, you were designed by the gods as uninteresting. Best thing you can hope if you want to make it into history is to have your eyes gouged out by an adventurer."

Now if only we could make really wearable armor by using the adventurer reaction system, there would be sense in a survivor challenge ! It is so much more satisfying to get to being a hero when you started as a lowly peasant, working your way up by making weapons and clothes from the bones and skin of your enemies... Now we'll have to eat their guts too ! Lovely time !
