DF Suggestions / Re: Elves refusing to use wooden bridges. Done yet?

Well, cloth can be useful. It helped me banning from my mind visions of my fortress inhabited by naked dwarves.
Seriously, I'd even let them eat a soap maker for this.

Don't forget adventure mod. DF is, as far as I know, the one only game that allows you to kill an entire city by beating them up with a sock.

That'd be definitely cool. Moreover, we wouldn't need to create each and every job in the fortress, leading to poor soap makers to die in misery. Let's give them a chance : if the baron likes soap, their fortune is made.

Yeah, the son of the goblin macelord you killed last siege won't probably give a speech (or he could, as when your adventurer talks to a powerful enemy) but he'd be there, leading the attack. It isn't needed for the game to explain it.

Well, I understood it as a way to give more details to sieges and to mod in specific types of sieges/attacks.

Because, currently, when goblins siege you, it's more or less "Hey, guys, it's been almost 8 months since we've last been butchered at Fortressdiamond. I guess we should go back."

I think it's part of the Fire and Lightning Lighting Arc. Such as anything related to heating things up.

Since I read a lot of what's on this forum, I'm likely to have read your posts. But honestly, I can't remember. Was it a long time ago?

I was in fact referring to this topic. I think it's more recent than any discussion about wages and rent, and it probably brought up ideas that were talked about in other threads.

Even though it's just about 2 lines of the original post.

DF Suggestions / Re: Some suggestions for titles.
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:00:48 am »
Perhaps they should have different names depending upon who is using them.
For a human leader who destroyed 17 elven forests and made 176 elves enter slavery, there could be a title used by the humans and another one used by the elves.
For humans (and humans' slaves) he'd be the Bright Conqueror ; for the rest of the free elves he'd be called the Spreading Plague.

You have a bunch of line about the size of the DF window both in windowed and fullscreen mode, and near those there are the grid size option for both modes.

In order to get a suitable result, you have to change the window resolution as well as the grid size.
For example, playing on a 1024*768 screen, I expanded the DF window so it would be almost fullscreen (to maximize the amount of tiles it'd show at the same time). Given a default (no graphic set) tile size is 8*12, the max tiles I could have was (1024/8)*(768/12) = 128*64 tiles, with the window set to 1024*768.

However, some tiles around the edges didn't display well, so I took 3 tiles away on both axes. I now play in windowed mode, 125*61 tiles, window size 1000*732. For a 1024*768 screen, it's quite enjoyable.

Yep, that's why I proposed a very little boost. But it makes some sense : if you've made lots of gobelets, you have the full understanding of the shape of a gobelet. You've a better sight of what you must do.
Even though you're not used to work with that specific material. And if you're used to blow glass, then it'll be easier to make gobelets, but it'll be much easier if you've ever done goblets before.

I'm starting to wander if it wouldn't be a way of cheating : Training a dwarf in two different, easy industries, then combining one side of each industry to make said dwarf extremely talented in a very hard to train industry.

You know, I was just reading another topic that was partly about how the economy didn't enabled free market. The thing is, dwarves currently don't have enough needs to enter consumering society. They just basically need to drink and eat.
At times, they'll go and buy something they like - but they won't even care about wearing clothes if it prevents them from buying that nice =iron gobelet=.

This suggestion would be really cool, mostly thanks to all that's needed for it to work. You could just dig out something about 3 tiny (let's say 2*1) rooms, then perhaps from a bed or a door or anything you'd designate the apartment. The dwarves who rent it then would have to buy everything, including furniture (makes me think they could also buy and stock food and drinks).
This meaning there should be furniture store. Or some Wood/Stoneworker workshops where dwarves would command their furniture to the mason/carpenter on their own.
The latter could even own the workshop, and make a living out of it. Which means there would be "official" workshops, the ones we currently have, and buyable workshops that dwarves could own.

All meaning it'd be cool because we could requisition it in the name of the fortress, with or without any counterpart.
The more we give to dwarves, the more we can take back.
Mwahahahaha.
Evil laughter.

Even though I'm not a modder, the ability to mod in new skills would be really amazing.
Yet, I think that carving wood and carving rock, although quite similar, are still far enough to be hard to do on one material even when used to work with the other one. And then, having worked with stone and knowing how hard it is should help, yes, but just a little.

I'm just saying (in case I was hard to understand - quite tired here) that the "skill synergy" (someone used it, we should as well use it too, as we're not responsible of the nerdiness of the name) influence on one dwarf's work should be small. Not a gigantic quality boost anyway.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Engraving bedroom walls
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:24:49 pm »
Tiles do not have 'sides'.  The entire tile is the wall and the entire tile is engraved.

That was the main reason of my doubts. A counter-argument would've been some coding specific to (smoothed) walls so as to make them link with each other properly. A counter-counter-argument was that a contextual code at the moment of drawing the tile would be much simpler.

Yeah, doubts.

Thank you anyway.

I've been hearing only one side of the wall is engraved quite often for a long time now. The thing is, I never witnessed it myself, but I could've been mistaken. It'd be nice to have Toady's answer on this subject, because I'm unsure about it for too long. It becomes frustrating.

Also, I must say if this is true, while logical, it's currently stupid given we can't chose which side of the wall is engraved.
