DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Engraving bedroom walls

The door is included even if not set as internal, I think. But in internal you can expand the room further.

No, I think he's quoting someone from the bug reports forum. And asking how he could expand DF grid without losing performance, as the guy he's quoting did.

So he's asking wether there is a program that would help.
I guess.

DF Suggestions / Re: Integrate Legends Mode
« on: August 08, 2008, 04:20:35 pm »
Or you could just have another instance of DF open while playing?
Legends mode doesn't eat too much resources once loaded.

No, a thing that'd be fine would be to have a filter on every part of the legends mode.

Just type in the name of a city in the category "age of heroes" and you only have events related to this city showing up. Easier for seeing the story of one place / person, and handier than the complete list in the "sites" screen.

Yep that's it... I was so sure I had already installed java I haven't checked ::)

575
Well, currently it opens the file in winrar ;D
I'm currently trying to deactivate it, but I lack the program to open DFPaint instead of winrar.

I'll probably look numb, but how do you run it on a windows?
Tried a couple things and couldn't manage to make it work.

DF Suggestions / Re: Absent pre-1400 technologies

I'm not that keen on firearms, yet canons could be fun.

About paper, vellum was used mostly on boats, because it didn't got worn by water. it's somewhat tougher than paper, but it's also thicker and thus it doesn't look very good when stacked - as in order to make a book.

Anyway, it truly does look dwarvier to have stories engraved. But I don't think economy accounts and trade agreements would come in handy if engraved on a granite wall. Especially when you tell the human ambassador to take it to his king if he wants to have a look.

DF Suggestions / Re: Reformation of an extinguished civilization
« on: August 03, 2008, 06:10:56 pm »
Could probably be linked to revolution, rebellion and all that sort of thing.
When inhabitants from a city are far outnumbered by their elven slaves, the slaves could try to rebel and, in case they succeed, either flee to the nearest retreat or make the town part of the nearest elven civ.

Although your idea of some elves meeting, keeping in touch, traveling/escaping together to find more elves and then find a place to live peacefully is quite awesome.
Especially when you can be given the quest to find and kill them.

What interests me is how they made the DF-like screen. The part with the smileys and all.
I'd really like to use the same interface for one of my coding project (and I got used to the DF one, so...)

DF General Discussion / Re: Toady is god

Yep. Toady-God wrote a game creating on its own a whole randomized universe and let irresponsible people play with the lives of tiny others.

...

That could explain quite a few things.

That's a problem I have when using ePSX. I think the process is still running in background. Right-click on your task bar, open task manager, go to the "processes" tab, look for dwarfort.exe, select it and "end process".

This did the trick for me (not with DF but still).

Not a native english speaker either. Nor mexican by the way ;)

And yep, it's probably a bad idea. Admitting Yahtzee does something with DF, he would spend 15 minutes telling how your eyes will bleed and you'll kill your entire neighbourhood in an ASCII killing spree, then 1 minute talking about how awesome the game can be, except for those 400 little bugs such as blah blah blah *8-meters-long list of bugs*.

He wouldn't understand. He's used to follow a clear, well-explained storyline. He probably wouldn't stand to play a game without scenario, less to make up his own.

DF Suggestions / Ask for informations and enhanced discussion system
« on: July 18, 2008, 02:00:59 pm »
I was wandering in adventure mode and finding myself trying to locate and free the two children of a guard, abducted by goblins - for fun.

And I thought it'd be neat to be able to ask for informations about a town, a place, someone. It would work the same way it does for filter in the legend screen : you enter a name and the guy you're talking to tells you what he knows about it.
Indicate the town on your map, giving you the last know location of someone (well, at least one of the places he's been).
It means the game would have to track acquaintances, friends and grudges. Anyway it's necessary for the Quest arc or something.

In order to get informations more easily, you could ask people not only about their "family", but after family ask more precisely about wether they have children, who are their parents, their grandparents. Not only about their profession, but get the list of the jobs they did, who they killed, where they lived and when.

It would appear the same way it does in the legend screen. You ask that guy about his children, he tells you he has 2. Then the best would be to click on one of his children's name, but typing in his name would work as well.

Then either you'd have the complete list, as in the legend screen, or you'd have a menu similar to the first, with "profession", "family", etc. The best would be to type someone's name, then enter the menu "location" and type in a year, and get where they were.
Or not to get it if the guy you're talking to doesn't know the guy you want to know more about.

Instead of getting this randomly, which is quite a pain.

DF Bug Reports / [38c]Goblins murder REALLY randomly?
« on: July 18, 2008, 01:14:11 pm »
I'm unsure about wether this is a bug or not...
Yesterday I genned a world and got interested in one special goblin empire, alone to the west, and their 600-year-old leader Osnun.
At the end of the gen she murdered some goblins after 500 years of nothing.

I wanted to know if I could find out why. So I generated the same world, using the same seeds for world, names and history after moving away this world (it seems like it won't generate 2 identical regions in the same "save" file).
I checked the world : the geography was the same, the territories were the same. This hydra died then, killed by the same guy.
The only differences I had in the parameters were that I didn't cull unimportant things and that I let it go until 1000 instead of 600.

Problems came here. Osnun murdered her husband 2 years before the latter was supposed to be killed by an hydra, in an attempt to save Osnun's life.
Also, she murdered different people, thus causing different goblins to live and die.

It means the goblins murder are independant of the seed. This way, the same seed won't always generate the same history. Goblins, by randomizing their murders, have found a way to escape the matrix.

I'm not sure wether it's a feature or a bug, but I must say I don't like it. I wanted to let the game be generated until a few centuries later and see how things were going, now those goblins ruined it.

DF General Discussion / Re: Ancient Goblins!?
« on: July 17, 2008, 03:26:25 pm »
Have a winner here.

Osnun Evilallied the Spotted Sanctum of Esteem, one of the very first goblins of the world, managed to live until year 600 !

In 1, she married Smunstu Witchhall (the leader of those goblins, a guard), settled in Lieshowers (in the malignant castle, one tower away from her demon lord) and became a fishery worker.
In 2, Niwora the titan attacked the tower and Smunstu was forced to fight yet managed to flee.

This could've been enough for the two goblins, yet it hasn't been.
Some time laters, a giant rampage ocurred on the fortress : 6 giants attacked Lieshowers ! Osnun tried to prevent the first one from stealing her home yet was unable to fight : the giant quickly smashed her right arm and let her flee. Although the giant stole their food and wealth, they kept on living and had a baby, Mato Rewardhate.

Years passed by, the 6 giants rampaged the fortress quite often, but nobody tried to stop them anymore. Smunstu fought a passing-by hydra, Gulsheb, in 5 yet managed to escape unharmed. A year later, two cyclops attacked Lieshowers : Smunstu killed one, Seba the Action of Bronze, and the other one, Tusnung, fled quickly.

In 8, Moslé Cleaneddung the Hydra attacked Lieshowers. Moslé first saw Osnun and attacked her, but her husband arrived and fought the hydra, giving Osnun the opportunity to flee - at the cost of his life. Smunstu sacrificed himself to save his wife.

Seeing their leader devoured, two goblins stood against the hydra :
Osnun vicecleaned, who had been scouting the area around Lieshowers for 6 years, and Nguslu Menacepraises the Spiteful Ferocity of Nightmares, a guard. While Osnun ripped off one of the hydra's head and fled, exhausted, Nguslu didn't give up and finally killed the hydra, thus avenging the death of Osnun's husband, Smunstu.

At the end of the year another hydra, Nīles, swore an oath of vengeance against those who killed Moslé, especially Smunstu. Nīles attacked Osnun (Smunstu's wife) in 8, but she managed to flee, in order not to let her only son orphan. Nīles came back the following year when Osnun was declared leader of the Wickedness of Circumstances. She tried to catch Osnun again, but made up her mind when seeing Osnun Vicecleaned, who had ripped off Moslé's head. Nīles killed and devoured Vicecleaned, and went away.

The 6 giants rampages followed, without any resistance. Niwora the titan, who nobody had seen since 2 when Smunstu fought her attacked the dark fortress again. Osnun had enough fleeing and fought with skill and hatred. The titan fled. For every goblin in the dark fortress she was a hero.
Niwora came back two years later, in 12, and tried to lighten her shame by killing Osnun ; however, Osnun once again defeated her and this time killed Niwora.

In the meantime, Osnun had been known as the enemy of all hydras. She had been personnally attacked by Snuko Dungssack (twice) and by Nīles (one more time). However, after Niwora's death, the hydras decided to take a break and not attack Lieshowers for a time.

This was Osnun's first time of relative peace, only bothered by the giants' rampages, which were now more like a ritual offerings for not being smashed. When 12, in 14, Mato Rewardhate got married, moved out to the nearest tower, the Fortress of Torment, and became a ranger. One year later he encoutered Tusnung Rundiamond the cyclop. Smunstu had killed Tusnung's friend Seba in 5, that's why Tusnung wanted to kill Smunstu's son : she smashed Mato's foot, but the wound didn't stop Mato from killing Tusnung and finishing his father's duty.

There's few to say about the following years. In 16, Stozu Witchpraises the Pinnacle of Crowns, a fellow ranger of Mato's, killed one of the giants during their 27th rampage. In 20 Nīles came back and was struck down by Dostnglosp Cleanedblack, a goblin who had lost an eye to a cyclop and was murdered in 21. A dragon attacked in 25, and a hydra before, although no one remembers what happened. The same year Gulsheb the hydra who had fought Smunstu 20 years before attacked Osnun who managed to flee.

In 38, Mato's son Stodost Tenderhells had left Lieshowers and settled in Liethorns with Snodub Cruelgorges, the daughter of the goblin who killed Nīles. Although she lost a leg to one of the 5 giants, she became a ranger and killed a minotaur in 37. Unfortunately, Mata the hydra found her and killed her, knowing who she was, in 38.

38 was a sad year for Osnun. She had an argument with her son, Mato. Furious about the death of his wife, Stōsost, as the leader of the Tick of Dikes ruling Liethorns, wanted to raise an army and get rid of every giant, cyclop or hydra in the region. He asked Mato for help, and Mato agreed. Osnun thought it would only lead to the death of every goblin in the mountains and that Slakga the demon lord didn't want this. Following her duty, Osnun killed her own son in order to protect the community she inheritated from her husband.

500 years passed without anything really important in the mountains. Osnun was still alive, as well as Stōsost. Mata, who had forced Osnun to kill her son, was struck down in 78 by Atu Evilroots, orphan 12-year-old fishery worker, in Lieshowers. Mata had attacked his wife 2 years before (she was 14 then). His wife, Dostngosp Boardedterror the Courteous Volcano, is still alive.
Gulsheb the hydra attacked Liethorns in 56 and stumbled across Stozu Witchpraises the Pinnacle of Crowns, who had killed one of the 6 giants. Gulsheb died there.

One after the others, each and every of the enemies of Lieshowers were slain. Now, only 3 giants remain.

Everything went smoothly until 553, when Osnun mysteriously murdered Amxu Doomedreigned... Want to know why?

One thing that struck me is that goblins only have one child and then they're extremely peaceful. These goblins are living in the moutains of the west, without any contact with any other civilisation ever since the beggining of times and there are so much of them who are older than 300. I thought they would fight with each other just for fun.
