Personally, I have those : a tower that blocks the one entrance to my valley. Walls or the 2 first level, then fortifications.

Down, a little moat filled with brook water, crossed by a bridge. The bridge allows the goblin to the bottom of the tower : the road is sided by fortifications, and there is a sort of stage that pass up the road so that my dwarves can fire from there. Before the exit of the tower, another bridge crossing a 5x5 hole.

Currently, I just make the goblins run away. Later on, I'll let them enter and trap them. And kill them.
And very later on I plan to set up something to flood the entire valley during a siege.
Not effective but pretty cool ^^

In my previous fortress, there was a sort of curse : if you entered in a mood, then you're just waiting for death. NINE dwarves ALL liking red diamonds asking for cut and uncut gems.

That was harsh.
But that's the game, it isn't that annoying to have a few dwarves dead.

The brook froze this winter, and my brand new well was destructed.
The chain, the block, and the mechanism didn't disappear though. I didn't see them on the floor just after the well was destructed, anyway now they're in my stockpiles.
I don't know if they were dropped at the well or sort of teleported to my stockpiles.

Turtles will always fascinate me.

DF Bug Reports / Game crashes for an unknown reason

Everything is in the title : I used back-ups several times and each time the game crashes, faster each time I retry.
On the first time, before any crash, I could play until mid winter. Now, the game crashes just after the dwarven caravan leaves, at mid autumn.
First I asked if it wasn't due to the caravan leaving the map, but now it hasn't the time to, and by the way my broker conducted the meeting but wouldn't trade at the depot.
So I was asking, since I hit Adamantine right before autumn, has anyone seen the end of the game yet?
Does the big upper demon make the game crash? I didn't dig a single level below the one where I found adamantine, and it's been only 3 months.

The wound is very likely to be from the fight. Yet, the items it is holding should've burnt instantly.

Also, you can't build walls diagonally BUT you can build floors this way.

Most tasks don't require experience to be done. Experienced workers do the work faster, though.

In fact, on the log screen (Q), when you zoom you can see 9 "O". The entrance of the cave is somewhere inside those "O", and not only in the middle.

I don't think it's too hard to find a cave, but it would be nice to put a few indications. Like in Morrowind "go to the est since you see a river then follow it for about 2 hours, then go to the west. The entrance is under a cliff."

Legendary miner usually get legendary by digging lots of standard-hole-in-the-wall.

Though it would be nice if legendary miners could mine directly smoothed/engraved stone  :D

A fisherdwarf of mine entered a strange mood, picked up stone, claimed a mason's workshop, made a rock statue and then... became a legendary MINER.
He wasn't even dabbling miner before !

Two bugs I count as little :
In adventure mode, I was coming back to the town when, in the very middle of the desert, I found a lungfish. On the ground. I mean, on the dry ground, there was no water miles around.

Also, at the inn, I accidentaly hit a merchant. I didn't have the text asking confirmation, I just moved toward him and broke his arm.
Seems like I was really drowsy.

Dwarves won't drink stagnant water.
If booze is available, they'll drink it before drinking water.
I don't know how they act about well.
