DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / <SOLVED> How do I utilize training weapons?!
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:40:46 pm »
Hi everyone.

So I set up an area for my military (which consists of 1 person atm) to train. My soldier has a copper battleaxe, which I assigned to him. I want him to train with a training weapon. How do I go about alternating? Right now he has both, a copper axe and copper training axe. He is dual wielding them. I want him to ONLY use one at a time, so if nothing is happening he has the training axe equipped to, well, train. And if an emergency takes place he switches to his real axe. The only way I see this possible is to unassigned the copper battle axe and then reassign it when needed. This can work now, but what happens when I have 20+ soldiers?!? That would take a lot of time to keep changing Equipment of each individual soldier.

I feel like I'm missing a key feature that makes this situation simple.

PLEASE ask any questions because I can already tell the way I wrote this is going to cause confusion...

Thanks!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / I threw my keyboard...
« on: August 09, 2013, 03:41:11 pm »
So I start up a Adventure mode with a human archer demigod, and build him to be the perfect archer with attributes. When the game starts i immediately go practice on some groundhogs and wrestle with some huge birds for some other stats. Finaly, after spending some time trying to get my skills ready, I coincidentally come across this camp.

I sneak my way over there, and find 6 vomitting ravens.....
I guess that should have been a warning but, yolo right?
So i take a shot at a raven and immediately a kobold archer see's me.

Its just me and him... staring at each other... with the exception of 5 vommiting ravens running away

So in my mind "Perfect! What better way to start my archery journey then with an unarmored kobold grunt!"

So I take a shot, my first shot, my only shot to a hostile creature, and it goes like this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I hit his nail... he hits my face and penetrates to my brain.

Creative Projects / SOLVED: Coding Question: IT SEEMS SO SIMPLE! (Python)
« on: October 26, 2012, 03:24:22 pm »
Nom here,

I am trying to make a simple Black Jack game, but i am having trouble with if functions relating to generated numbers.
Being Python isnt really important because this simple feature is on most programming languages.

So what did i do wrong?

Ideally after receiving a 2 as the random number it should print 2 again.
The strange part is the elif function for 3 works... i think it has to do with me having OR in the argument.

DF Suggestions / We all know its true...

We NEED more music!!! I have grown used to simply disabling nay noise once the game starts because i cant take that same song over and over again. ::)
We could really use some music variation, even if its the same type of medieval music (which i don't mind), we simply need more of it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Full moons?
« on: October 21, 2012, 10:54:50 am »
Adventurer mode**
So i want to become a werebeast so whenever i get a quest to kill one i go at night but the target is still in peasant form. after looking at the wiki i found out it HAS to be a full moon.

So is there a way to find out what nights will be full moons (during the day) or do you literally have to wait the night of to check weather <W>.

« on: October 20, 2012, 08:46:35 pm »

DF Suggestions / Systematic Coexistence! -- Making DF more realistic
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:56:59 am »

First, I should probably start by saying that the majority of what is said in this article goes for adventurer mode and adventurer mode only. With that:

In my opinion adventurer is going a little lifeless. Not in what you can do (especially with the upcoming patch), but what happens when you aren't doing anything. The sad truth is I cant wait to be ambushed by goblins or attacked by bogeymen, because otherwise there is no activity whatsoever in the world.

1. Civilizations on break? Why is it that everyone is at home doing absolutely nothing? Shouldn't the farmers be farming on the fields at each town? Why arent the hunters and rangers hunting? Even if the farmer doesnt really obtain crops or the hunters never kills a animal, it would add to the liveliness of the game.

2. Raids? It seems as the goblins and kobolds are always ready to jump on your back, but they never attack a town or village. When i say attack i dont mean a full-fledged siege (that would most likely destroy everything in world gen) but maybe just 3-5 goblins periodically attacking a village just to spice things up.
*Sub-suggestion: There should be a messanger. This way if a town is under attack, within a couple of hours a child will come running to you town to tell you*

3. Professions? This is sort of a add-on to my first suggestion. When I get maimed or damaged in a battle, it would be great if i could go to a surgeon/doctor.etc. and have them do something. Im not asking for them to do something out of the ordinary, in fact, its less about the injury and more about having a interactive environment. Currently there are soldiers and commoners, because the professions mean nothing without individuality.

Like i stated, i understand most of this if not all will not be used for multiple reasons like it can open up too many exploits, it would make world gen insanely difficult, and just the fact that it would down-right crush your processors, but i thought iw ould just give a little taste of my dwarf utopia.  ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Is it a bug?
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:29:38 am »
Nom here,

So I noticed a little... trick... while playing adventure mode but im not sure if i should post it on the bug tracker because im not sure if  its a bug...

So I had a vampire in adventurer mode. I go around drinking peoples blood. One day i stumble upon a book of death and become a necromancer too!
So now im a vamp-mancer or necropire. However, necromancers never thirst. This super-seeded the vampire withdraw of needing blood, so i never thirst, yet still get the vampire attribute bonuses.

Is this considered a bug?

DF Gameplay Questions / Cant find people on sewer quest
« on: October 18, 2012, 08:53:33 pm »
Hey Nom again.

So i always get quest saying to kill something in the sewer but i always encounter dead ends.

So i get the quest, and go into the sewers. From this points my TSK is **** saying im on point. So i search the sewers but keep finding dead ends. What usually happens is:

You know how the sewers are three tiles wide. the outer are block floor and the inner is Deep water. The block floor sidewalk ends by a sandy wall or something and only the water continues. However, if you try to use the water path since the sandy block wall is above you, you end up drowning.  :-\

Am i doing something wrong or does this have anything to with with swimming skill?
Thanks in advance

DF Gameplay Questions / How realistic is this games mechanics?
« on: October 17, 2012, 03:59:33 pm »
Nom again. ;D

So by realistic i mean how much is the game actually processing events or are the random situations. To clarify:

Lets say you get attacked by goblins. When this happens the golbins are obviously at your doorstep ready to kill you. Did those goblins randomly appear, or somewhere at the golbin camp did they really rally and send those troop swith equipment that they literally had.

Im just trying to get an idea of how realistic the game gets and hope this question was too qonfusing.

Hi, im a new member of DF, you can call me nom.

Straight to the point: I hear about all these amazing things you can do such as retrieving stolen babies from goblins or seiging camps etc. But I don't understand how you get there. To my knowledge, your camera is restricted to your fortress only, so how would you go about visiting a goblin encampment?

To conclude, is there away to interact with civilizations outside your little camera view screen?

Thanks and hope the answer isnt something simple, i have a habit of being simple sometimes. ::)
