DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Full moons?
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:46:39 pm »
You can check the moon phase either with W or in the Fast Travel screen. Consider that full moons last three full days (werebeasts feel their effect even during daytime) and always fall in the middle of the month, which is always 28 days long with the current calendar system, you can roughly estimate how many days you have to wait with D. So, between the 13th and the 17th of any given month.

Thanks! that helps alot!

We NEED more music!!! I have grown used to simply disabling nay noise once the game starts because i cant take that same song over and over again. ::)
We could really use some music variation, even if its the same type of medieval music (which i don't mind), we simply need more of it.
Try soundsense.

If im not wrong: Soundsense is an add-on feature (usually included in lazy newb pack)
Im saying by default for those that wish to download the game and only the game.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress Analysis
« on: October 21, 2012, 11:00:26 am »
So I recently bought a ton of leather from a trader. My dwarves don't want to move it from the depot, which is outside. Even after deconstructing the depot, with the goods on the floor outside, they wont move it. Even if i designate them for dumping, they WONT move the leather! Now my militia are going crazy trying to kill the kea that are stealing it and zomg its turning into a situation.

Any ideas what the problem might be? There is a stockpile thats dedicated to leather, and is currently empty.

I have no idea why it would be... but make sure its not forbidden.
And to answer the original topic: Whenever i dont know what to do i seal up defences. Go up a z level and make sure all parts of your fortress have a roof (build->Construct->floor).
If not archers on top of your fortress can shoot into your fortress slaughtering peasants.
happened to me a few (6) times.

DF Gameplay Questions / Full moons?

Adventurer mode**
So i want to become a werebeast so whenever i get a quest to kill one i go at night but the target is still in peasant form. after looking at the wiki i found out it HAS to be a full moon.

So is there a way to find out what nights will be full moons (during the day) or do you literally have to wait the night of to check weather <W>.

DF Gameplay Questions / How do you get in a dwarf fortress???
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:46:35 pm »
The title is pretty direct. When playing adventurer i can never find the entrance to a dwarven fortress, i always go to the marker (***) and there nothing there ( i assume its below me).
Any tips on finding entrance or is it just luck  :'(

You might be pleased to know that number 2 is being worked on for the next update. In fact, most of it is already programmed. Number one is also planned and being worked on,  as well as number 3, I believe.

Quote
Goblins arrive at their target village/town now and split up into several groups which will very soon be causing trouble. The mayhem has to work at each of the different resolutions (on the other side of the world, with the abstract site map loaded, and with the actual tiles loaded), though I doubt I'll work through the tile resolution problems fully now, since buildings are going to be demolished and I don't want to get bogged down. Once buildings are being destroyed and civilians are being harried, I'm going to have the enemies camp out for a while with some survivors lingering so you can figure out what's going on and have a bit of an adventure involvement with it. I think the enemy encampments will probably end up being the first places infiltrated (as in the hero role dev pages), and that we're going to move directly toward that once the camp exists, and then we'll dial back the goblin rampage a bit at times and also get back to infiltrating bandit camps.

THATS GREAT!!!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How have you been dying recently?
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:08:36 am »
Got surrounded by 6 goblins master-swordsmen near a river with no swimming skill... Realized i was a vampire and coudnt drown...
Jumped in the river and managed to flounder to the other side.

I stood at the ledge laughing at the goblins drown. I had 3 steps of victory before a carp pulled me back in the water and bit off my arms and eventually gnawing my head off. ::)

Well if you searched bronze collosus that should have worked... not sure why it didnt...
But i agree with you because there is still a crap-load of things it wont find like disguised vampires or necromancers, etc.

First, I should probably start by saying that the majority of what is said in this article goes for adventurer mode and adventurer mode only. With that:

In my opinion adventurer is going a little lifeless. Not in what you can do (especially with the upcoming patch), but what happens when you aren't doing anything. The sad truth is I cant wait to be ambushed by goblins or attacked by bogeymen, because otherwise there is no activity whatsoever in the world.

1. Civilizations on break? Why is it that everyone is at home doing absolutely nothing? Shouldn't the farmers be farming on the fields at each town? Why arent the hunters and rangers hunting? Even if the farmer doesnt really obtain crops or the hunters never kills a animal, it would add to the liveliness of the game.

2. Raids? It seems as the goblins and kobolds are always ready to jump on your back, but they never attack a town or village. When i say attack i dont mean a full-fledged siege (that would most likely destroy everything in world gen) but maybe just 3-5 goblins periodically attacking a village just to spice things up.
*Sub-suggestion: There should be a messanger. This way if a town is under attack, within a couple of hours a child will come running to you town to tell you*

3. Professions? This is sort of a add-on to my first suggestion. When I get maimed or damaged in a battle, it would be great if i could go to a surgeon/doctor.etc. and have them do something. Im not asking for them to do something out of the ordinary, in fact, its less about the injury and more about having a interactive environment. Currently there are soldiers and commoners, because the professions mean nothing without individuality.

Like i stated, i understand most of this if not all will not be used for multiple reasons like it can open up too many exploits, it would make world gen insanely difficult, and just the fact that it would down-right crush your processors, but i thought iw ould just give a little taste of my dwarf utopia.  ;)

DF Gameplay Questions / Is it a bug?
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:29:38 am »
Nom here,

So I noticed a little... trick... while playing adventure mode but im not sure if i should post it on the bug tracker because im not sure if  its a bug...

So I had a vampire in adventurer mode. I go around drinking peoples blood. One day i stumble upon a book of death and become a necromancer too!
So now im a vamp-mancer or necropire. However, necromancers never thirst. This super-seeded the vampire withdraw of needing blood, so i never thirst, yet still get the vampire attribute bonuses.

Is this considered a bug?

Yeah, go ahead and make multiple smaller pastures.

The problem is in DF things start from one corner(top left i think) and go to the other. Kinda how miners dont mine in a orderly fashion, they kinda make themselves a crappy tunnel to the first corner and THEN start to really mine.

So like i was saying... when you have a big pasture, all the animals immediately go to one corner, giving them the impression they are all smothered up when really they have more space.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Climbing...
« on: October 19, 2012, 08:48:24 am »
Well, i agree climbing can make sieges very fun, but I doubt they will be able to simple hop over your defences.

First of all, like many people have said, if you have a smooth stone wall, the goblin would have no grips to climb.

Secondly, if a goblin has a pathway, he will not need to resort to climbing. Goblins will use their siege creatures to break down doors as instinct so unless your fortress is enclosed without any doors, you're pretty safev 8)

*My second point needs verification*
