There's some sort of giant creature that can be seen climbing up and down Death Mountain each day.
Well that's not ominous in the least.

... it almost looks like it's keeping time with the cloud rotation.

Nope.

... actually, for some skills (parallel parking or somethin', I'unno), it may be the best option available in some areas. Boonies get boonie.

Do have to say I'm now kinda' wondering if anyone's actually gone and done a comparative study of driving test rigor. Maybe crosschecked it with local accident rates, see if there's any indication of if/how much it matters. It'd be pretty terrifying if there was actually a negative correlation between test rigor and local driving safety...

Law and Order: Wizard City

COME ON! Who here would POUNCE on this show? A Law Procedural show based in a magical, yet modern, realm with forensics and everything.
... on one hand, that last sentence could be pretty interesting. On the other hand, I'm also pretty sure being a Law and Order spinoff is about the fastest way that exists to strangle a concept in the cradle, so that particular incarceration would probably be some variation of terrible.

But maybe it would give some competent screenwriter/TV developer the inspiration/excuse to make something nice? So I guess that's as good a reason for another Law and Order series to be made as you'll get.

Wait, wait. Which first debate? I mean, I'm guessing this cycle but that coulda' been the '08 one, too.

... do note, the weedeater in question is a push one. Thing's basically a lawnmower.

Think one or both of the nonfunctioning electric ones were corded, though, sure. Pretty sure they were both some years old when they stopped working, though. Decent battery tech that could handle 'em probably still wasn't around or still too expensive or somethin'.

E: In other WTF news, the game I'm playing (Magical Vacation; recently finished being translated, same art direction as Sword of Mana) just had a short arc/scene that was centered around people cursed to turn into Dodos. And that's not some strange case of a purloined word being used as the name of some mystical beast. They're friggin' dodo birds, and they go "Do♪ Do♪".* Earlier part of the game actually did the same thing with elementals trapped in Dodo bodies. Game's been kinda' out there so far, but this is... this. Yeah.

Yeeaaah, probably not. Distant Worlds (and largely by extension Universe) came out in 2010. Starsector's first release wasn't until a year later, and I'm pretty sure a lot of its current art assets weren't really there at the time. DW's also published by a fairly notable company, iirc, so there likely wasn't exactly much need to do something like that.

Plus checking distant worlds' art again it's definitely not that close to starsector's. Somewhat similar, but that's not exactly surprising. Most sprite-based sci-fi is, tbh.

... if you want some fun memories, AI War actually was running with Tyrian 2k sprites (which were released under an open license in '07) for some of its assets for a while, iirc. Pretty sure some of its stuff (research stations and similar models, mostly) is still only barely not a direct rip.

Think it was some kind of combination of that, pressing it too much, and/or not noticing what setting the throttle whatsit was supposed to be on. Maybe not pulling the cord-thingy as directed, I'unno. Possibly in such an order that by the time they actually noticed or tried proper procedure, they'd gummed up something enough it needed a few hours/days to clear out and start working properly again (so they could get it working, just with... difficulty). Gave 'em a fit and a half, though, whereas doing it step by step the first time, as mentioned, was basically a non-issue.

As for the why, because the folks that use it most often can't really work your normal one all that well at this point, so it's a push one (they're... old. Both are in their 80s, one still gardens fairly regularly), and if there were any electric options for those, they cost too much more to have been considered. Also pretty big yard, honestly, so it helps out even the ones of us that chip in that can handle your average carry-around ones.

... plus I think all the electric ones they've had over the years have managed to break. Pretty sure there's actually one or two laying around somewhere in one of the storage areas/outside places that just don't work. As you might imagine, folks that don't bother to read the ignition steps also aren't the biggest on careful storage and maintenance :V

... think I figured out why everyone had so much trouble starting the weedeater last time. Hadn't got involved myself (was basically sick as a dog that day), but watched folks trying for a while. Near as I can tell having just started it up myself, it was because they didn't read the bloody instructions stuck on the side of the machine in open and conspicuous view. Took multiple healthy adults probably two or three dozen tries and a lot of exhaustion between them to get it going last time.

This time, it started on the second pull, and took almost no effort. What took three fairly healthy adults 10-15+ minutes and a near heat stroke, took one barely healthy one <30 seconds and not even sweating.

Why. This happens so often. Something goes wrong, doesn't work, comes out poorly, whatever. You ask the person having the trouble if they read the directions (or the recipe, or whatever), and they look at you in something like incomprehension. Then continuing pseudo-incomprehension when you do and everything actually works.

RTFM is goddamn magic, apparently. Forget friendship, we got RATS.

Eeehh, t'be honest, it's mostly just a really bloody fuzzy term. Wouldn't be particularly surprised if it's being used differently in different fields and/or regions.

And yeah, it's not uncommon for economies in the same category to be very, very different. Is what happens when you try to categorize every economy in the world into three groups :P

10795
Most of my interactions with the terms being used in anything even approaching a concrete sense come from business/economics stuff, where it mostly has to do with economic and industry development, s'far as I'm aware. The BRIC, and similar economies, are second world because they are, broadly speaking, second tier/developing economies. Moving towards or in the process of developing industrial or postindustrial economies, basically.

You'd think Progressives to try and win over Bernie supporters but....I think there's a good chance many of them will vote for her rather than abstain from the election entirely and face the specter of a Trump presidency. Maybe it'd be arrogant of her to assume that all good dems will flock to her banner once she has the nomination but it'd also be pretty expected.
Nah, not exactly arrogant. Most recent polling is showing that somewhere in the 60+% range of current sanders supporters are intent on/willing to vote clinton if sanders isn't not an option, iirc.

Pretty sure a lot of folks are kinda' having trouble remembering that clinton and sanders both have pretty damn similar platforms, and that their voting records are rather in line with each other (people forget that some of hillary's history is actually left of bernie's, methinks, heh). Folks that are intent on voting for sanders will be getting most of the same promises out of clinton, and probably at least an equal likelihood (and possibly higher, since clinton is... so far usually a lot more explicit about how she intends to do what she's claiming to intend to do) of seeing said promises enacted. Voting wise, there's only so much she'd gain bringing a progressive at this point, basically. At least not for their relationship with the progressive inclined base, in any case.

Second, actually, iirc. Nowadays that's basically the BRIC, and russia's the R in there.

Yeah... so long as there's not actual/no longer acute trauma (i.e. PTSD flashbacks, etc.) going on, there's probably not much (more) in the way of landmines or whatev' (than there already was), so however you were treating them previously is probably pretty okay. Can't really recall much at the moment, and most of what I do remember was more directed at non-sexual abuse victims (More than one family member :-\) than otherwise, but yeah.

More than that, definitely contact someone(s) that is (/are) more directly involved with counseling/support/etc., along (and/or in conjunction; if they want someone to go with to a support group meeting or shrink visit or somethin', you could maybe do that, ferex, if your relationship is close enough it'd be appropriate to offer) with your friend, and probably try to let said friend direct any substantial changes they want to see in y'all's friendship. If they've made it this far (and it sounds like it's been at least a decade, maybe two or more), they're probably no longer particularly delicate on the subject or having much trouble knowing what they need to do for themselves. So... let 'em do that, unless there's signs something's going particularly bad on that front.

Cutting out their tongue eh? How medieval of you.
No, no, nothing like. They'd still be able to write and pantomime and whatnot, after all. Just... say something like a geas became an actual thing, and they got hit with one preventing communication. Most people, even some of which have pretty odious views to me, I'd be bothered by it to some degree. WBC, not so much.

And yeah Helg, being able to talk about something like that, and talking about it more, generally is a good sign and a healthy thing. Probably not always, but usually. Other than that, my best advice would... probably be to do some research? It's been years since I last time I brushed up on generally recommended best practices for interacting with abuse victims, but I'm pretty sure there's quite a lot of material available; just in general, and also specifically from abuse support groups and counseling organizations and whatnot. Which... yeah. Possibly consider asking a psychologist (particularly if there's one you know and trust), or an abuse victim support group or somethin'.* They often accept some kind of request for anonymity, particularly for things from long past or that the victim has no intent of seeking legal redress for.

In the meantime, probably don't let it effect you too terribly much, particularly if it's no longer traumatic to the victim. I am pretty aware that a lot of abuse victims (sexual or otherwise) are not exactly appreciative of people significantly changing their behavior after learning about it; regardless of what happened in the past, they're still the same person, etc., etc. Maybe a thanks for the sign of trust, offer of support or whatnot if and how they want it, that sort of thing, but otherwise just kinda' be the friend you've previously been. That'll most likely help more than just about anything you can do, really.

*Maybe even ask your friend if they've been in communication with something like that, and ask 'em if it'd be alright if you talk with who/what ever that happens to be, too. Could be a good idea regardless just to have a second person aware of whatever they're dealing with that way. Can help make sure they're not being taken advantage of or somethin'. Doesn't sound like it's likely they are if there's any being consulted, from what little you've said, but it's always a possibility.

Harassment generally requires both a pattern and a specific target, Iirc; you can't really hit someone with it over generic or group condemnation, or protests. The WBC is pretty careful about making sure they don't really do either. As noted, they've repeatedly won lawsuits over attempts to shut them up. They know what they're doing, and are very meticulous about not crossing legal lines. One way or another, what they're doing is mostly constitutionally protected speech. Disrespect and reprehensible statements (so long as they're not explicitly inciting violence or somethin', and perhaps unfortunately such comments directed to gods don't count) are not illegal.

... personally, I actually would prefer things that way, for all that I would not be exactly saddened if folks like the WBC suddenly became physically incapable of communication. The disrespect of today may not be the disrespect of tomorrow, and I'd rather not it end up where something like speaking Spanish or something (passing by the funeral of someone murdered by a Spanish speaker, perhaps) could be seen as criminal disrespect.
