I... I don't know if it's entirely thread appropriate, but I've definitely been amused by the fact that switzerland's official source of statistics doesn't provide english access to a lot of the more negative (so to speak) data they've got available (such as crime data, statistics on mortality, etc.), today. They've got a lot of other stuff, but a great deal of their material just isn't available in english (save via google translate or somethin', I guess, but the site's set up such that it confounds that a fair bit).

There's something just... I'unno, slick isn't the right word. Casually intentional? Amusingly conspicuous in its absence? It's something like low key statistics humor. Not entirely sure english has a word for it, really. But I definitely got a chuckle when it was noticed.

Also, for high gun deaths in Switzerland I cited [snip]
For what it's worth, it looks like their governmental statistics website-whatsit is here. Or rather, that's a link to their current fatality data because I can't be arsed to figure out the appropriate link for the english portal and that's the page I was currently on when I noticed one existed, heh. Raw data looks like it's primarily available in german or french, though, and it does appear a fair amount of the site's resources just aren't normally available in english.

As far as i know, the wii u is not a tiny pc in a box like the other two current-gens.
Eeehhh... I'unno about that. It's apparently got some dimension of PC compatibility going, since there's apparently already a somewhat functional -- in the sense that it's got some commercial games working in some cases; of particular note being that both twilight princess and wind waker HD seem to be playable to completion, if not with amazing fidelity or stability -- emulator flapping around (for those less familiar with emulators and the development time often involved with them, that much in four years is kinda' bloody amazing, particularly for a more modern console). The best of the xbone and ps4 attempts still look like they're a long ways off from doing anything the end user would care much about, heh. Hell, the xbox 360 and PS3 ones aren't even doing that well, last I paid attention, while dolphin is just kinda' cheerfully humming along.

Honestly, just looking at the state of emulation (terrible, terrible heuristic, and I don't care) it looks a lot like folks doing Wii/Wii-U games might actually have the least problems porting of any of the current generation of consoles. Not that they'll be doing it, of course, but still.

Eehh, should be pretty chill, I think. Worst of it looks to be sonli having trouble realizing how what he initially wrote came across.

... for future reference, using the word "necessary" when talking about invasion and murder, and phrasing reference to human groups in the same way you do wildlife is... perhaps not the best idea. Also maybe never pair the words necessary and good together in such a situation. Tool or somethin' would work better and have significantly less of a connotative burden. Maybe don't use necessary either, really. "As vital for survival", or something along those lines, would be less likely to come off as supportive of varying degrees of genocide.

Yeah, it's not an accurate assumption, unfortunately. However, a corporation is largely limited to ruining my life in a civil lawsuit, while the government gets a whole toolbox of nasty options to use.
W... what? N... no, without a government there (or at least without an armed body of individuals or somethin' willing to enforce such limitations, which amounts to the same thing), that whole toolbox gets opened to the corps (and everyone else besides), and often more beside due to the simple dint of having even less impetus to listen to the general public than most governments do. Some significant portion of the reason we even have government is specifically to keep that toolbox out of the hands of less tractable systems of organization (such as, y'know, businesses). No government, and anyone with the ability to manufacture that mustard gas gets to get rid of that inhabited building they want to build over, if they're unethical or powerful enough to not care and/or not be stopped. And there pretty much always ends up being at least one.

Really man, if there's two things american (/world) history has taught us it's that we really don't want to let businesses off the leash, and that local resistance to them is often not nearly enough to stop 'em. Advocate for anarchy or minarchy as much as y'please, but for the love of the nonexistent gods de facto corporatocracy is not the way to go. At least in a system like ours a politician has to at least ostensibly worry about being reelected. Unfettered business just has to worry about whether they can acquire people to kill or cripple everyone that tries to stop them.

Hrm. Maybe with a mod that removes the limits on amount of heroes you can field? Possibly lower the cost or upkeep on 'em, too. I'm sure most enemy lords won't be much of a problem if you walk in with twenty offensive spellcasters and delete them instantly :V

Different assessments of what counts as a democratic institution, to a large extent. If the government isn't a legitimate democratically chosen organization, then it's fairly reasonable to distribute power to non-democratic powers (i.e. individuals, and by extension companies, etc.).

Whether or not there's an accurate assessment of legitimacy going on is a different discussion, of course :V

Though that's a fairly silly assumption, strife. Will of corps/businesses/etc. have been enforced by men in badges (and blackjacks, or an equivalent) for a long, long time. Private security and its historical equivalents (kneebreakers, etc.) are a thing. Though I guess it's more of an "In an ideal situation where the corporation isn't running rampant without external checks on it" thing. Which is fair enough, I guess.

Pretty sure most of the folks existentially terrified of the ATF being something besides crippled are roughly about as enthusiastic about seeing those organizations made useless, too.

Naaaaah, it's worth mentioning. Plenty of people do just walk off or don't really pay much attention to the plot et al. Just noting you weren't stretching and that there's some agreement on the point, heh.

... well, you would certainly not get both. Not even sure why you'd consider it, heh. NX version would probably be your future proofing choice, whereas the Wii-U one would be cheaper (I.e. you could get more stuff beyond it).

Nah, near as I'm aware what you're seeing is what's fairly commonly seen, to one extent or another, by folks that watch KlK and don't immediately walk off. It'd fairly well suffice to say that Trigger was almost certainly actually being very intentional with the costume (and lack thereof) design and how it was used. Though there also was almost certainly something of a cake in both hands deal going on; it's fanservice, it's parody, and it's also sorta' played straight at the same time. One of the few instances in media I can recall that skimpily dressed high school girls (and guys, too, for what it's worth) was in fact something of a point of pretty substantial artistic/thematic merit and used with an oddly significant amount of taste and plot-appropriateness.

Would also add, as you sorta' mentioned, that there's a very definite sort of progression in regards to acceptance of the body and whatnot. Not sure how much of it's specifically in relation to existent japanese mores and how much is just kinda' generic/universal, but yeah. Self-image and whatnot does seem to be a fairly considered aspect of the writing/design/etc. involved.

Later revelations will probably change your outlook on the school system and whatnot, but... well, we'll leave that there. Don't think the bigger reveals had been hammered on too hard by ep six, iirc. It still has a fair amount of weirdness to go through, ehehe.

Maybe looking to bring up the fact that the shooter in that one resigned last month, a couple days before they were going to decide whether or not to fire 'em? I'unno.

... kay? Would probably be an example of it, though which side you consider to be acting against threats to the country's freedom probably changes based on person :V

Did realize a fairly amusing (inasmuch as it'd make a number, particular of the more right leaning folks, in the gun control discussion froth at the mouth) comparison while I was cooking some breakfast, though. There's a pretty strong parallel to make between the various subordinate powers of the commerce clause and the individual right to firearm ownership, heh. The treatment of the Interstate Commerce Commission (which had pretty close to unlimited power from the 30s to the 90s, eheh) and similar such things over the years would probably be a pretty good example of how the sort of interpretations involved can play out.

... and sonli, you didn't really call much, because that's pretty massively misrepresenting the discussion that's been going on over the last several pages. There's maybe one or two people in here advocating for a complete ban, and as stated repeatedly that's basically a fringe position so far as the stateside gun control debate goes. People can buy a pretty wide range of firearms because, well, that's what the US citizenry has pretty largely supported. Hobbies, sports shooting, and wildlife control are reasons enough for us (and note, even many countries with stronger gun control laws still allow for those to one extent or another), nevermind self-defense and whatnot. Good chunk of the pro-control folks in the states would be perfectly fine with you owning and operating a chaingun or some shite, just maybe not allowed to store it at home or somethin'.

Which is only sorta' relevant, because firearm ownership is currently being treated as an individual right in regards to legality, and has been for a few decades. That it could change does not mean it has. Just means it actually being constitutionally protected is fairly tenuous.

Which is more or less entirely irrelevant, tbh, because you don't need constitutional protection to instate a law, just a lack of conflict with the constitution. And the individual right does not particularly conflict with the constitution, any more than any of the dozens of other potentially fatal/high risk (relatively, at least) things we allow.
