General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

Eh, I'd probably start with bumping up infrastructure and social safety net spending, maybe working out some education/workforce improvements and/or decriminalizing a fair amount the drug trade that's bloody rampant in Florida, so at least there's that much less of a reason for things to turn violent. Better mental health spending/outreach would probably help a fair bit, too. More work into actually reintroducing the criminal population into the normal workforce. Just as a non-exhaustive, off the top of the head list. Buncha' stuff we could be doing, really.

Pretty sure there's a hell of a lot they could say about the state of violence against the LGBT communities in the US, and whatnot. Discrimination and such, too. At least enough to split the airtime something a bit closer to 50/50.

But sure, they've got their agenda, and their way of handling things, and yeah, much of their viewers likely don't actually give two shits about the hate aspect or anything involved with it. Doesn't mean their way of handling things doesn't piss me off a bit.

Eh, at least those tend to be fairly blunt that they're only going to be talking about one or the other (or other, or other, or etc.) side of things. It's that attempt to... I'unno conflate or some shit, th'head's not really working right at the mo', that gets to me. Focusing on one or the other is okay, it's when you claim to be all about both and then strongly demonstrate that you're not that gets to me, I think. If you're going to say you stand in solidarity, goddamn stand in it. If you're not, express your sympathies and move on. Somethin' along those lines.

If a guy killing or wounding 102 people is not newsworthy then what is?
Issues perhaps?
What's being done to stop the other thousand that'll probably (assuming 2014 numbers hold fairly steady, which they probably will) finish being killed by the end of the year, maybe? Several tens of, with wounding included. Can't read AT's mind, but that sounds like it might be a place to start.

It's a fine sentiment, but if mass media published life story of every shooting victim, there would be no room on tv or in newspapers for anything else.
... I'm not saying win/win, but maybe that'd count as lose/win? People would maybe start to really try to cut down on causes, if only so they could watch TV again...

... yeeeeeaaaaah, walking by TV, I can tell the news is going to be thoroughly pissing me off for at least the next few days. "We stand in solidarity with the LBGT community, but this was both an act of terrorism and a hate crime, and now we're going to spend all our time talking about terrorism. We're sorry dead gay people, but we've got something else to dedicate our screen time to." Latter half implied, but the former was only just shy of being verbatim; they didn't actually say they were going to stop talking about the hate aspect, they just spent 75+% of the time talking about other things. Vulgarity does not exist to properly express the sentiment this engenders.

So wait, are you calling me a homophobe? Because I'm definitely Catholic... Funny, you should tell the guys I've made out with. I'd wager they'd be surprised :V
Nah, he's spouting bullshit because someone religious compartmentalized in a way he thinks is representative of the true nature of religion. For MSH, it's only compartmentalization and denial of the nature of the faith when the person ignores the negative aspects of the religion, instead of all the bloody rest of it. When the latter gets ignored, it's True ReligionTM.

Anyway, we're now at... 11 hours, if this started at 2 AM? +/- an hour, as I forget exactly which time zone orlando's in. Things are rollin', it seems.

Yeah, there is. Find it roughly in the same place as the ignore feature. Presumably they were talking about whatever social media venue was being discussed, though.

inb4 certain FBI officials commit suicide via 2 shots to the back of the head
Man, just saying, but if I were a FBI official intending to commit suicide, that's exactly how I'd actually do it. If you're going to go out, you might as well go out screwing with people.

10944
Claims of it, at least. The sources always seem to be anonymous. I mean, that's kinda' understandable considering if they weren't said people would be fired instantly and probably in jail, but still.

That said, if it actually happens I'll be impressed. It'd be almost admirable to actually see someone sacrificing their job and some number of years in prison for what they see as justice. E: Well, or however large the bribe ended up being. That'd be less admirable, but significantly more likely :V

10945
For magical sky unicorns of some sort, since the FBI is explicitly incapable of indicting anyone. Presumably talking about the email thing, though, and forgetting that the FBI can't actually do anything except hand off evidence with a recommendation attached.

Largest single person mass killing in american history, actually, from what I've been seeing, if the minimum-50 dead is accurate. Next down was virginia tech (iirc) at 44 via bomb, apparently. Next shootings down were in the 20s and 30s.

Have to say I'm a bit worried now that my memory started working and reminded me I know folks in that area :-\

Trump seems to have just netted himself the presidency by a stroke of luck that I suspect I brought up somewhere in this thread a long time ago.
Did he, though? The parents have apparently already made statements that this was more due to the guy being a massive homophobe than anything. Trump may be anti-muslim, but the party he's running with (and a fair chunk of the people intent on voting for him) is also substantially anti-LGBT, whereas the dems are substantially... well, not. I wouldn't be calling things in his favor, at this point, since this could be about as much a rallying point in that sense for clinton's electorate as trump's.

Above and beyond the stuff involved there, most of the folks that were against muslims enough for something like this to change their intended vote were already going to vote for 'im. And there's a good five months for it to become just another mass shooting, t'boot. Color me skeptical this is some kind of silver bullet for trump's campaign.

... definitely a tragedy, though. Won't lie, it's a little hard for me to feel much for it* when m'aware of florida's murder rate (it's indeed something notable when someone pulls off what's probably going to be in the ballpark of a 20th of the people killed this year, but...), but it's still damned unfortunate.

And nah PG, that looks roughly accurate from what I've seen so far. Considering this was, what, eight, nine hours ago? It's probably not as clear as it'll be in a day or two, but yeah.

*E: Well... bit of worry. I do actually have a few old friends that are gay or bi that are off in that general direction, last I checked. Might be time to send a couple messages, I'unno.

Got a cheapo offbrand bottle of cream soda a few days ago. Cost a buck, wasn't my money, etc., etc. Got around to tasting it, today.

It. It tastes like, y'know. Those "bubblegum" fluoride mouthwashes some schools would torment younger children with? At least when I was young. I don't know how. I don't gorram want to know why. But it does.

It is horrible. That was a taste I didn't want to encounter again. A dollar was too expensive. Free would have been too expensive. There is now an offbrand I know to never buy, ever again.

E: And yeah, initial estimates I'm seeing are up to 50 dead, at least another ~50ish wounded, though official casualty reports may not have been released yet. Was a gay nightclub, but they're apparently not entirely sure about motivation et al yet.

you can't print a moving gif.
The hell you can't. We've had flip books since the 1890s. That is how you print a moving .gif.
