It regularly is, more or less. Most of that kinda' thing I picked up from business classes. Martial power of the salaryman, y'ken? It crushes countries with the strength of the five steps of an apology. Or at least their economies, which amounts to the same thing.

11207
Humility? On the internet? Ahaha.
... no? Effective communication, or at least more effective. Humility has nothing in particular to do with it, s'about not sabotaging your own conversation.

11208
... well, RK also basically blamed maniac for RK misunderstanding what m was saying, with that last bit y'quoted. Not just an explanation.

S'one of the cases where the better word choice is to own the lack of understanding; not "it looks like you" but, "I'm reading it as" followed by "if I'm screwing that up, my bad, but could you expand on that?" Or along those lines.

11209
Gee, why is it nobody thought of that?
If it makes you feel any better, I did, but it's almost always an absolutely terrible idea to tell and/or ask people to apologize, so I didn't actually say it.

That sort of communication direction pretty much always makes things worse, especially if the one taking it isn't in a position of notable authority over the ones involved, y'know?

... for what it's worth, I do apologize if I was contributing to what you mentioned just a bit above. Definitely wasn't the intention.

Well, they're born unable to open their eyes or crap for a while, and unable to eat solid food (though you can keep them going with stuff like goat's milk and whatnot*) for a while longer, but this one was well past that point and well into the point of dismantling the small animals the other cats brought to the porch. No worries on us giving away cats that are too young unless the person taking them in knows very much what they're getting in to, aheh.

*Family's had a few cases over the years where the mother either died in birth or refused to nurse one or more kittens, so we've actually gone whole kitten-arse-wiping hog before.

11211
Had been eating solid food for... maybe two, three weeks? Probably less than a month, certainly less than two. Zero clue how old that translates into, though, I've been paying absolutely no attention to how many weeks/months they've been faffing about.

It's much better in terms of the cat's health, though. Most of the ones we don't manage to give away end up dead,* and generally the sooner they get sent off the less likely they are to come back (and end up dead).

Was just one kitten, though, and it was going to a home that has folks that have taken in young strays before, so it should be mostly a'ight.

*We're talking about cats that are basically strays, they just tend to stay near the house and eat the food the other housepeople put out, so I try to take the time to get them tame and ready to go when places are found for 'em.

Are you stealing cats, you heartless bastard?
Only from their mother and family :V

11213
Man, today was a good cat day. Have managed to offload one of the kittens on some other poor bastard! Now it's their fuzzy little longhaired problem, fleas and all.

... will say it reacted remarkably well to being plucked out of its nap, sat on a couch for a few hours, and then drove off and handed over. Think it had been picked up maybe two or three times before today, never been inside, never in a car, etc., etc. Only meowed and hissed a little, and calmed down very quickly once given some proper attention. Have had kittens that age react a lot worse to a notable amount less, ahehehe. Bonus points to it, the selection process was "whichever one I caught first when I went outside", so it wasn't particularly more accustomed to humans than most of the rest of its litter.

Good stuff, now to do the same thing to all of its siblings :V

11214
Also confrontational, but somewhat less tersely?

11215
@poh: ... and I actually generally think maniac's fairly on point with their points, if often (more than) a tad too confrontational about it (which is really seeming to mess with some folks interpretations of their posts, tbh). Critter largely seems on the general side of folks that smell something rotten, just is paying attention to other smells and more than a bit frustrated with certain sorts of rhetoric/communication styles (that I'm mostly okay with, heh).

Also incremental fixes are good, too! Sure, better is better, but some better is more than none better, perfect vs. good, yadda yadda yadda. You don't stop aiming for the bigger/future victory, but you also don't shoot yourself in the foot vis a vis victories in the now. Just 'cause I don't think we're in a good spot regarding the environment doesn't mean I don't recognize that Obama's actually done some pretty damn important things on that front, and so on, and so forth.

... is that green monstrosity what spoilers look like in the eyehate theme?

Eeeehhh... you don't really have to trust them to do it right, exactly. Just more right than what it is now. Entirely can come later, if necessary. But any right is better than ain't right, and m'pretty sure most folks are of the opinion it ain't right at th'mo :P

Plus if they are using an algorithmic base, the algorithm can just be made public. That'd make it real easy to tell if someone's wiggling the lines any.

Anyway, wiki has a bunch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering#Changes_to_achieve_competitive_elections
No, nnooo, not arguments to change it. I'm faintly aware of tons of marvelous ones of those, because the current state of things is generally considered bugnuts by basically everyone I've heard talking about it on both sides of the political divide, so you hear lots of things that make a good deal of sense basically regardless of what sense is to you. I'm wondering who out there is defending the current state of things.

Crux mentioned something, at least, which is nice even if somewhat insubstantial, so thanks crux :V

11219
Sure, sure, euphemisms and whatnot. I'm sure there's some out there, but would you happen to know of any that's actually approaching decent?

11220
... y'know, I just realized I don't think I've ever actually seen an argument defending the state of gerrymandering as is. Any of you happen to know of something approaching a reasoned one?
