*shrugs* People deny the validity of the razor pretty often, P.

I didn't say we know everything, not even remotely. We see that brain damage leads fundamental personality changes, which precludes some sort of fundamental personality Thing.
It doesn't, actually. Folks supporting the concept of souls have noted fairly easily that brain damage leading to personality changes just means, at most, that the brain is something like a receiver, and it's the connection between body and soul that's changing rather than the soul itself. Which still exists, of course.

And they died, T. Fatal insomnia is a thing.

After the mentioned conversation, I'd really rather not.

... pretty tangential to the current discussion, but someone help me out here. Earlier today I had a conversation with a fairly staunchly conservative relative in which they recommended something called ANP as a news source, noting that they had apparently been around since telegraphs first came in.

The, uh. Closest match I've been able to dig up googling was All News Pipeline, which apparently came into being in '14 (and its use as a new source is more questionable than Cthulhu's humanity), so that... doesn't fit the criteria.

Curious to know if any of you would happen to have a better idea what the zog they were referencing?

... y'know, I just now noticed that apparently virginia's governor re-enfranchised a, uh. Couple hundred thousand ex-cons, two weeks or so ago. And intends to continue doing so at least until his term is up.

It. It's a thing. Definitely a good thing, because continuing to deny folks that have served their time a vote is complete bullshit, but... yeah.

I'm... not entirely sure if this is the right place for it, but if any B12ers are up near fort mcmurray, alberta, I hope you're safe and not, ah. On fire. Apparently there's some pretty serious flames happening around there. Something like 90k people evacuated, areas of the city seeing 90+% loss of buildings, nasty business. Know we've got some canada folks, so... stay as safe as possible, if you're nearby.

So, uh. Kaisch dropped?

Doesn't have gratuitous fatalities they says. In TA you could literally blow chunks of machine from one end of the map to the other, and actually have the flying bits damage whatever they hit when they land. It was a thing of beauty the first time you blew up an airship a few screens away only to have the falling debris manage to nick off the last bit of health on one of your damaged buildings.

I actually can't think of another game where pieces of destroyed units are capable of flying over the hills and actually hitting things for (admittedly minor, usually) effect. I'm sure they're out there and I just haven't played them, but I can't think of any.

Though I'll totally say this hypothetical mass scale DoW having moments where a warboss's head gets knocked into the distance and lands on a commissar, killing them instantly, would be amazing. Glory to the first man to- splat

General Discussion / Re: Ultimate Poll of Bay12 Pizza Toppings!
« on: May 04, 2016, 05:25:58 pm »
I've had sliced potatoes on pizza before. Hashbrowns, too. I've put a pizza in mashed potatoes (and mac & cheese, and rice, and noodles, and a few other types of pasta...), too, but I don't I've done much actual mashed potatoes on a pizza proper. Maybe occasionally layering a bit of some on a slice or two, since I've done that to... basically everything I eat, at least a few times. Pretty alright regardless! Better than pretty alright when it's various sorts of seasoned potatoes.

Also the thin advocation's not really a weirdo camp, though it may be for your particular region. Lot of people are very insistent thin crust is the only proper way. They deny themselves vast reams of doughy goodness, but to each their own, et al. Me, I'll eat both, but I also have an unholy love for bread that's only just shy of carnal so the crust is very interesting to me regardless of the thickness (I've totally just scraped all the toppings and sauce off a pizza and ate the crust by itself before, usually when I wanted to use the rest for cooking something else). Though you can, admittedly, do more with thick crust in regards to filling and whatnot. Make a second pizza and use that as the base. Pizzaception. Still, thin is good, too.

I'm trying really really hard to like SupCom but I can't get into it. I haven't given up yet though. GiglameshDespair keeps encouraging me to play.
Maybe try some of the spring games? Mostly MP only (but still with a decent playerbase, if much of them very able to kick a new player around like a tin can), and several of them are mostly just updated total annihilations (not that there's anything even remotely wrong with that :V), but the gameplay and scope is fairly similar and it might click better with you. Considering it's free, it wouldn't hurt much to give it a shot, heh.

Also, to the other discussion, seriously, Heroes of Annihilated Empires. Game was substantially melee focused, and while the animations weren't exactly the most amazing things in the world (Again, '06, middling system reqs, still largely the sort of fantasy RTS normal for its time, unlike TW's shtick), they generally looked fine, especially considering how well the game ran performance wise. Pathfinding was as functional as just about any RTS manages. Most smaller units didn't have much in the way of abilities, but that's because they were dying by the dozens (and freaking seriously, there's nothing stopping someone from just adding extra attacks to a unit -- there's no goddamn reason an infantry squad needs to be constantly told to throw grenades). It's another spot on example of how RTS battles can be scaled up substantially without losing much, if anything, in the process. Insofar as large scale battles go, folks could be doing a hell of a lot better.

Though yeah, from what I recall HoAE was actually influenced by Cossacks somehow or another. Same region of origin or something like that?

... also +1 to umi. I never had the reaction time to be able to pull off even a half of that, but yeah, calling the TA line's combat simple is just... wrong. Badly wrong, and has been wrong since TA, which itself was one of the first RTS games to actually use ballistic trajectories, projectiles with genuine travel time, and copious use of units able to fire on the move.

The technical aspect hasn't been a substantial barrier since at least like bloody '06 -- the non-TA game I named above would easily see multiple thousands of units die per MP battle (I remember drawing vs. AI skimishes out a few times and ending with a total game killcount that was over 20k), barely had spec requirements worth mentioning, and a few hundred units on screen at any given time was basically normal, for a frankly half-assed in a lot of ways game that's a decade old. Supcom, Spring, those are other easy examples that kinda' spit on the concept that the problem is technical or hardware limitations.

The general problem is design intention (which is fair enough, it's just some of us would really like something different now!) and lazy (/otherwise focused) coders, near as I've ever been able to tell. We have the capability, we've had the capability, and we're still on a two decade starcraft unit limit fellation streak despite it. RTS games have long had the same problem stuff like LoL or DotA does -- they're still basically crawling up the ass of game design from twenty years ago, design that was made and hammered out under technical restraints that no longer exist and often were worse than the at-time current practices could manage besides. It ain't technical capability that's stopping us from having a game where the infantry takes movement penalties because the ground's turned to a bloody mush and they're having to parkour up corpse walls while sucking up artillery fire.

It almost certainly won't be this game that does it, but damn if there's few established IPs out there that would fit that kind of thing better than WH40k.

Okay, so. Blogs. Tumblr, blogspot, etc., etc., etc. Anyone know of a workable way to change their background etc. on an android device? Preferably without logging in to anything in particular, and hopefully that's compatible with Opera (though that's entirely negotiable at this point. I don't mind using a separate browser for that stuff). It. It's getting rather painful trying to read some of these things, when a disgusting amount goes with bright, apparently unchangeable, themes in what appears to be a deliberate "fuck you" to anyone reading at night. If there's a way to fix that that doesn't involve downloading the entire site and converting all the text to an epub or something, it. It'd be great.

... wasn't the you betcha' one Palin, nenj? Could have sworn there was someone a cycle or two back that had that as a common-ish verbal tic.

All I can say is that if the aesthetics and voice acting are up to par, I'm going to be forgiving a lot if there's stuff to forgive. Give me another one of these and you can do just about whatever the hell you please :P

Didn't even particularly like DoW2's gameplay (and I could barely play it besides), but shit like that made me not give a damn.

Definitely echoing the preference for something between the DoWs, though. I'm down with less basebuilding/micromanagement (auto-ability use for DoW1 was quite possibly the best goddamn mod it had :V) so long as there's still hundreds to thousands of things dying in a single match. Or minute, I'm not picky. Do realize that's probably not going to happen, since it seems some days like Heroes of Annihilated Empires or something from the Total Annihilation line were the last RTSes to realize there's a place (and a marvelous one) for thousands and thousands of corpses hitting the floor during the course of a map, but one can hope. One can hope.

Also yeah, considering the person in question is floridian, yes, the florida primaries are closed. So, y'know, may have influenced the critter, and no, she almost certainly won't lose her seat for that statement. Maybe some other reason, but there's no camel's back to break regarding the florida democratic party insofar as open primaries go, heh.
