General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?
« on: September 20, 2015, 12:02:32 am »
... I wouldn't really call Jitsu Wa "as formulaic as you can get for a harem show", unless the anime does a serious number on the manga. In broad strokes, maybe, but the details and character interactions and whatnot are quite, well. Not formulaic, as harems go. Much at all.

You can get a lot more by the numbers, and involve significantly less quality in the process, heh.

Man, let's not bring bad lemons into this, okay? Keep the details on your fetishes carefully tucked away.

... I mean, I guess khorne could get up and take a swing, but what exactly would that accomplish? Nurgle doesn't give a shit*, slaanesh likes it and asks for another, tzeentch just kinda' blinks as khorne decks some random planet on the other side of the galaxy, impy just decks 'im back and it rapidly degrades into bloody panpsychic manlove. Who knows what all the other ones do, if khorne can even find them to swing at. Strength isn't everything, no matter how much mr. flakes claims it is.

*Or worse, does, and do you really think blood showers are going to wash out nurglite backwash? Ain't nobody want to deal with that.

Life Advice / Re: Preserving 139-year-old book.
« on: September 19, 2015, 06:52:59 pm »
What can I do to share this book? Is there a place where I can upload scanned pages or transcribed text? Since I found this book and bought it, I feel obligated to share it with others and make sure it stays alive.
You can actually already get it as a .pdf or .epub through, at least, google. If you want to host scans of the version you have, any of the dozens of uploading joints would work, setting up a torrent, etc., etc., etc. Just spread it around a lot and something will probably stick, heh.

They do have book enclosure type things, for what it's worth. Usually plastic or glass or whatev', to help keep environmental damage to a minimum. Beyond that it's just care... probably a good idea would be to go back to the library, and ask them if they have suggestions for preservation. In the mean time, there's things like these (three different links there, by the by). Step by step instructions/bullet point lists/etc. are very common online -- just give a search for book preservation, taking care of old books, and so on.

Life Advice / Re: Turtle Rescue
« on: September 19, 2015, 06:28:16 pm »
Guess I already responded in the sad thread, but to move things over here, in my experience short term care of a healthy softshell involves a bucket. I've seen adult ones survive in a 5 gallon with nothing much but something to eat thrown in and something to rest on (usually a fallen branch) for over a week. Injured... if you've got a large plastic box -- the kind you'd normally use to store christmas decorations or whatever in -- and a smaller one, you could probably stick the smaller one top-down in the larger one, fill up to the small one's edge with water, then put the turtle on the small box and mostly call it a day. Find out whatever it eats, make sure the area it's in doesn't get cold, and you'll probably have done about all you can do. Maybe stick in some kind of ramp material so it can easily get on/off the smaller box. That sort of construction. Would be the best guess I can offer when the last time I had a turtle was fifteen or twenty years ago, heh, and none of the softshells were kept for any particular length of time (usually they were kept as pseudo-pets for a few days and then released or eaten, depending on the size).

E: Though if it's one of the smaller ones, you might just need the small box and a rock or somethin' to rest on. Maybe two, one completely out of the water and one partially submerged. Whatever's appropriate for the size, basically. Short term care wise turtles don't need much space at all, so far as I'm aware, just food, water, and warmth.

... what about vets? It's possible one might have some kind of emergency number or whatnot, or at least be willing to give some info re: short term care. Dunno if the wildlife agencies would even do anything about it, since softshells don't seem to be endangered or particularly dangerous.

Can't really recall much for turtle care, though. Think I actually had some sorta' pet softshells (for a little while, anyway, possibly only to keep around until they were big enough to eat), but that was well over a decade ago and I wasn't the primary caretaker. Also they may have just been left in a five gallon bucket.

Make sure it's got some water to crawl around in and food, that's really about all someone untrained can do for it. Probably take care not to let things get too cold, if you've got AC, etc., running -- I've lost healthy reptile pets to idiots not keeping it warm enough, nevermind injured ones. Probably not going to be able to identify problems without training, much less do anything about it, so giving it food and decent hydration is about all you can do. It'll make it or it won't.

No, no. Shoot lower. Your bicentennial good deed has been accomplished. You may now go curl up in a hole until 2050.

Remember if you come out and see your shadow, you get a ten year extension on the next good deed deadline.

E: Related to that, Karma Groundhog would be a helluva' spirit name. Or megaman villain, I guess. Most anticlimactic (and intelligent) boss fight in the series, though, for the latter. Robot pops out of the ground, sees megaman, zero, or one of the other ones, just pops right back down in the hole and doesn't come back up.

Other Games / Re: Games you wish existed

I'd like a turn based game (other than civilization) where every player makes a move at the same time.
Age of wonders series does that, iirc, at least in part. Simultaneous turns are not terribly uncommon for TBS stuff. Then yeah, there's stuff like frozen synapse, which has more examples than just that. It's not common for multiplayer (and even less so for singleplayer) games, but we've been seeing a bit more experimentation with the concept recently-ish.

That's part of the goodies AoE brings to the table :P

But yeah, the single player experience was pretty incredibly solid, too, especially for its time, and still damned decent today.

It's probably the best thing built on the Age of Empires engine, imo, featuring fairly old-school RTS action with standard AoE units plus mythological creatures -- you know, hydras, valkyries, laser crocodiles, gods smiting things from on-high, giant titans in the expansion, that sort of thing. Fairly differentiated factions, plenty of neat stuff, all the goodies AoE brings to the table... it's just one of the better quality RTS games made, even being over a decade old. Highly recommended, heh.

Yeah. As the link notes, the expansion came out twelve years ago. It's still really bloody playable to this day, but, uh.

@Rub: Doctor? Alternately, try google. Or wait. Waiting will make it stop, one way or another.

Also wow, furt. Now the question comes: "Will it be worth a damn?"

... well, that and what the zog they're doing making an expansion on an engine twelve years old. My exploitation warning organs are pulsating in time with the biological hope engines.

... cannibal sheep would be pretty metal, though. They'd be like fuzzy chickens!

Then again, that would be strong mandate to murder them. Hrm.

@BFEL: ... and laws generally aren't -- and to a fair degree, shouldn't be -- written with the individual in mind. They're written to the average, with judge discretion, pardons, and similar other release valves in place to deal with outliers. Everyone else, the average works. It's going to cover the majority of cases, and other parts of the legal mechanism deal with the rest. That's how pretty much any functioning legal system is constructed, and when it's working properly, things turn out as it should. There's a whole host of legal history and psychological research and so on and so forth backing that up. The law cares about the average first and the individual second, and largely has to to administrate over any group larger than a single family.

... also, maybe don't piss on trailer park folks. Living around a lot of them, many -- most, from what I've seen -- would match up as well or better to a high school honor roll student, assuming they're not one (which is a poor assumption to make for areas where trailer parks are common). Poverty and poor conditions does not mean you have room to stereotype them as poor decision makers -- many of the people living in trailer parks are trying to make the best they can with a poorly dealt hand, not there due to their own mistakes. You definitely have your trailer trash, but treating the whole as if the outlier is representative is as bad as ignoring individual variance compared to the average :-\

Well, no, what I was saying is that we couldn't do anything about it anyway. Only thing really stopping y'is torquing off the other giants :P
