General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol thread

I think you're forgetting the Cold War and pre-Cold War, where the Soviet Union was aiding/controlling the Communists. Which kind of annoys me.
I'm not. Even during that period there wasn't parity between left and right extremism in the US, especially in terms of actual violence and whatnot. There weren't soviet backed mobs lethally depopulating towns in the US, as far as I'm aware. There's more than just one or two ruins from or monuments to exactly that on US soil from when our right wing extremists just mobbed up and murdered a bunch of people in earlier periods of our history.

The x has been pressed for doubt. There's not exactly much indication that would be particularly true in US history, if we ever stop murdering the left-wards parts of our political spectrum enough it could begin to happen. Corruption has been an issue, but the US right has been a disproportionately persistent and murderous problem at least as long as the US has existed at all. "As bad or worse" than the folks that have literally murdered entire towns (multiple, in several states) at one point or another in US history is a hell of a claim.

There's stuff going on with the ideologies grouped up on the sides of the US political spectrum that just don't lead to the same results even when they do go unusually bad, nevermind the blatant and persistent differences in negative outcomes at all the other points in time.

Yeah, that's, uh. Ungood, on several levels?

Good luck figuring out what happened and keeping it from happening again...

til the kitten appears to like birdsong sounds
This has actually extended into wtf territory, this is legit the most chill I think I've ever seen a cat behave in my life.

Like, most of the time this cat's been around she's been a bit of a hellion (or more precisely, a healthy young kitten without other cats to play with), but since I started running these birdsong vids when she's around, she just curls up beside the computer and conks out. I've actually never seen cat behavior like this before, there's catnap and whatnot that's normal, but... not like this. Ruddy thing's acting like she's tranq'd or somethin'.

E: For those with cats that would like to try, I've been running this on loop. Nothing fancy, anything similar would probably work if it's not something specific to this particular cat.

It... outside of space dust or whatever and asteroids I don't think we're getting more material from somewhere? Geographic features are changing for all sorts of reasons, though, even if you ignore warming and rising waters. Volcanoes erupt, sinkholes happen, so on and so forth. Some places sink under the waves, other places dry up. Mostly it's slow as hell though, without encouragement global scale geologic change doesn't generally happen in the scale of human lifetime.

Anyway, dunno if it's changed more recently, but a quick eyeball suggests at least one study back in 2016 that had found the world had gained net landmass (surface stuff above water) to the tune of about 1 lake michigan since the 80s, which on the scale of the earth is pretty peanuts (like 1/8750th or something). So maybe some, during a certain period of time? If we actually start gaining it at rates we'd have reason to care about, we'd probably notice real easy, heh.

... I remember one of the earlier versions of that, I think I managed to indefinitely stave off an invasion by just feeding it a constant stream of new civilians. Had enough immigration to balance out the steady loss of life.

Was kinda' messed up people kept coming this hellpit of death. Had really nice decorations and housing, though, and plenty of food! You just, uh. Probably wouldn't live longer than a month or two or something.

I mean, the second one is just a squad based AoS -- there were a few of those back in WC3 days, and I've seen at least one commercial attempt -- with some multi-faction stuff going on. If you go back to the old custom map stuff instead of the DotA fellating moba junk, you'd be in comfortable territory for that kind of experimentation. It'd be a step back in the right direction :-\

... wait, when was that, again? I think you're talking about afghan/iraq, but, like. Those were kinda' the wrong countries, so the point doesn't quite sit right.

til the kitten appears to like birdsong sounds

kicked on one of the ambient noise youtube things to try to deguass a little after the funeral, cat climbed up on bed and curled up next to the computer and promptly took a nap

it'd probably be a happy thread thing if i weren't so goddamn exhausted right now, ha

It's pretty common for braids, iirc, and you see it occasionally with looser tails, particularly in exactly the situation you used it for (I tend to just tuck mine into my shirt when I'm doing something like that). So yeah, folks tie tails with multiple bands, sometimes.

Republicans sponsoring human-trafficking?
Well, yes. It's both not particularly new news, nor exactly surprising the political descendants of the dixiecrats and lost causers would be less than cautious on that particular issue.

oddest thing about today, we've learned the kitten is basically terrified of people both bigger and smaller than she's used to seeing

both the tall people and the children that have come around to offer condolences and such have sent that cat running and hiding

I'll get some eventually. Probably some point after his kids actually tell him his wife's dead.

... don't disagree with them wanting to tell him in person, mind. It's just making things rough in the interim. If this stuff doesn't actually kill me, it'll hopefully work out as okay as things can. Just take some time.

Yeah, they've been at the hospital with my grandmother, dealing with everything else going on. No need for stink eye, I think... they're trying, it's just the circumstances involved have kept them away from where I'm at a lot for the last bit.

Thanks. Dunno if it helps right now, but maybe later. Think the worst part for me at the moment is the rest of the family wants to wait until they're here to tell grandfather, so i'm here with him trying not to break down in front of him and it's starting to cost me fine motor control

i hope that recovers, i was already not great on that front
