The (distant) secondary and growing reason is because they're fairly rough on the environment. I've off and on heard estimates that central heating -- air conditioning in general -- may be untenable pretty much anywhere within the century, just due to the pollutant aspect.
Which'd be rough. The elderly would have to abandon the equatorial areas, heh. Probably young children, too... it's the old and very young that semi-extreme temperatures/exposure take the greatest toll on, fatality wise.
