General Discussion / Re: Mountain Dew
« on: June 22, 2015, 12:32:02 pm »
Flat mountain dew is more or less the basic ingredient of dew-tea* (just by way of boiling instead of simple time), so I'll say it's capable of coming out pretty alright. I'd definitely call flat mountain dew one of the more palatable of flat sodas (which, to be fair, isn't saying all that much).

*The majesty that is dew-tea is simple. You make tea, only instead of water, mountain dew. Despite initial appearances, boiling soda will (probably) not explode or fizz all over the place or whatev'. It just bubbles for a while.

... dramatic, or their experiences are different from yours. I'm actually about five hours out from atlanta, in north florida, within an hour's drive of the border, and have family in Savannah. The folks I was talking to grew up in georgia, and the descriptions of such came from both sides of the race divide and with pretty much the utmost seriousness. There was no chain yanking going on, there's just parts of GA that's racist as the buggery. Same with mots of the tri-state area, really, the south in general, and... really, the US as a whole. There's a lot of places in this country that are damned nasty as such things go. Plenty of places that's not, sure, but there's still pretty serious problems (even discounting official buggerance, like we've been seeing from the police for the... well, last more or less ever.) in a lot of areas.

Though yeah, I will note that I've had atlanta described to me by folks that lived in several different parts of georgia as, roughly paraphrased, "The only thing worth a damn in this state." People tend to note its problems, but overall be pretty positive about that city in particular. The rest of the state is by and large a shithole.

... or just using one of the dozen and change other torrent sites, for that matter. Or non-torrent options, which still exist fairly prolifically. TPB itself gets banned or shut down often enough people don't really seem to care all that much -- they just chill until the next incarnation or a different portal pops up, and use that instead.

I don't know, maybe its just where I grew up (northern most suburb of Atlanta, GA. [The megacity of the south]).
It definitely, definitely was. The suburbs in general (excepting the occasional gated community, anyway) trend towards being some of the less overtly racist areas in the states, especially around some the larger cities (like Atlanta, heh), iirc. You want to see some shit, you go into the inner city or out into the sticks.

Georgia in particular... I've talked to people (and note the plural -- this has happened to more than one person, coming from different places) that's seen tiny race riots happen in the last ten, twenty years (probably less -- these were college students talking about highschool years) in parts of south georgia. Few dozen kids breaking out into a race vs race brawl in the middle of a school, stuff like that. Talked to folks that come from areas in that state where it's still damned dangerous for a person to just walk through certain parts of the places they lived, due entirely to their skin color. Parts of the state are doing alright, but a lot of it is still experiencing racial tensions and racism like goddamn.

General Discussion / Re: Where Can I read Warhammer 40k books?
« on: June 21, 2015, 11:54:48 pm »
Mm... well, I'd prooobably recommend asking over in the WH40k thread as to which book(s) to hunt for first, then. The warhammer stuff in general isn't exactly the most amazingly written stuff, and while there's a fair few that are quite decent, there's also some that's... less so. Especially from a fluff point of view... there's a particular author (though I've forgotten which one it is -- they're fairly notorious, in any case) common to the black library that's well known for more or less crapping on the lore, iirc. Once you've got some titles, do the normal cheap-book thing -- scout used book stores, thrift stores, your local library, that sort of thing. Online isn't really an option if you're staying clean about it, at least insofar as official warhammer stuff goes (though, as noted, there's plenty of fanfiction/fanworks and whatnot floating around these days).

It looks rather like the black library prices their online stuff gorram ridiculously, so your best bet from a low-investment entry into the associated novels is probably going to be physical instead of online (barring the yarhar option, anyway), unless you just happen to get lucky and check BL when they're doing something charitable. Which is both fairly unlikely and may not happen for a while... plus there's no telling what they offer up -- it could very well be one of the junkier novels, or just snippets or whathaveyou.

Though if you're just looking for a good read instead of specifically WH40k stuff, there's pleeeeenty of stuff online these days -- fanfiction, original fiction, ebooks that have been released into the wild for whatever reason (there's a fair few authors out there that have first volume of trilogies and whatnot online, free, to hook potential readers), gutenberg, etc., etc. Perhaps look around and all that rot, heh.

Near as I can tell from some cursory searching, the legal answer is more or less nowhere (the illegal answer is, of course, that it's fairly trivial to find pretty much the entire black library for yarharing with a simple google search ::)). It looks like the black library has occasionally offered something free in the past, but so far as I noticed it was all limited time offer stuff. Maybe keep an eye on it, something else might pop out of 'em in the future.

You might check the fanfic req thread for some mentions of WH40k stuff, though. Some of the ones floating around are pretty fluffy, lore wise, and there's plenty of fanwork stuff floating around the net if you don't mind it not being official.

E: Though, as the belated side note, I wouldn't call it selfish or greedy at all. There's no real harm in asking if there's openly available resources for something you're interested in. Appreciation and interest isn't greed, on its own. Libraries are a virtue, heh.

Which... incidentally, it might not hurt to check your local library system, if there is one. There may be warhammer books in their catalog, somewhere. You can end up with some odd stuff on those shelves.

You can buy it on amazon. ~140 USD (not counting shipping) for 5 gallons of syrup (which seems to be at a 5:1 water/syrup ratio, meaning that's at least 25 gallons worth of dew.*). Looks like it's readily available to order from other places, too, and may be available locally depending on where you are. Apparently some sam's clubs stock the stuff, just as an example.

*E: Which... doesn't look like that's a bad price at all. About four cent to the ounce, which is less than what the stores around here are running. Bit more extraneous cost to get whatever you need to properly mix the stuff, but still looks like a pretty solid deal if I'm not hilariously mangling the math involved.

Steam forum doesn't seem to be registering a problem. Could be something between you and it has screwed up, rather than your end or TF2's.

... so don't? Go into it being honest about being interested in and intent on maintaining an open relationship. Let your potential partner decide if they're still interested, and all that.

They were muslim, and showed their near-middle-eastern/<something-not-western>-european heritage. They counted as arab/brown for the xenophobes, I do believe (and yes, I'm pretty intensely aware former USSR or whatever the zog they came from isn't particularly arabic). More importantly in their case, so far as that sort are concerned, they were muslim. Could be fookin' pale white and irish and be brown as far as that sort counts it, if you're muslim.

Probably similar in nature to the LAM, yes. Just a wider cast of characters, and the main character having a properly english innuendo name.

But no, TD1, nothing like twilight. Torrid is fine and should be encouraged, unhealthy abuse is not and shouldn't.

E: ... huh. There's Lifts-Her-Tail cosplay. I feel like I should be surprised, but... not.

I could see a book series made from that conceit. First book title would be "Posh Johnny and the Naughty Scullery Maid", I think.

Indeed.

And discuss how best to subjugate the peasants.
... is that what kids are calling it, these days?

I guess roleplay is becoming more widely accepted...

That... sounds pretty horrible. Complete with that chalky aftertaste?

Regardless, reminds me of the extent to which mixed sodas come out tasting like children's chewable aspirin, especially if anything orange flavored is involved. It's kinda' uncanny. There's probably a 1 in 3 or better chance that throwing together any two (or more -- actually, the more you add beyond just two, the more likely it seems to become) sodas will come out tasting like chewable aspirin, from what I remember of the days I mixed sodas with regularity.

who gives a hoot when your meals are
It's actually kinda' helpful for folks that give a shit about other people. Lets folks know when/how much other folks they care about have eaten, in a fairly concise and simple format.

Except the dictionary definition of "dinner" isn't "the third meal of the day", it's "the main meal of the day".
Dictionary can get stuffed up a fried chicken's cloaca. Dinner is third meal.

More practically, the functional use of that stuff varies by region in the culture I'm ensconced in. Sometimes it is third meal, sometimes it's evening meal, sometimes it's main meal. Depends on where you're at, and how it's used colloquially. I've taken to using a first/second/third thing, and advocating others to do so as well, for reasons mentioned above. It helps communicate in a way the traditional use doesn't.
