green tea with honey is great though...

I mean, milk, I'unno, I've ever actually tried milk in tea, so...

If folks like it, they're free to like it, I guess? Folks' taste buds work differently, some people can enjoy stuff others can't, like that whole soap cilantro thing. Maybe there's a milk in tea equivalent out there that just hasn't been researched?

Of course it won’t, anti-abortion activists only care about kids when they’re in the womb.
that as a response to a question of if a child in the womb would count for tax deductions or child support is both remarkably appropriate and makes my head hurt

Yeah, I just don't give anyone my cell number. Like, I have one nowadays, but... I'm not going to answer it, period. So I just don't list it when people ask for a contact number.

Yeah, it'll hurt pretty bad for a while, especially with it going down like that. Just... try to make it through. Always pretty miserable to lose a pet you were close to, but the edge does wear down after a bit :-\

You're talking to someone in florida. 80 is still enough somethin' like half my family (myself very much included) sweats under a fan, especially the less healthy ones -- it being miserable and leaving a person a non-functional waste of a human being wasn't some kind of hypothetical :P

I mean, you can be environmentally conscious and also not want to be fucking miserable (e.g. leaving it at 80F -- I've been there, done that, in similar conditions to that kind of texas heat, and it can easily leave a person a non-functioning waste of a human being if they're stuck in it for an extended period)? Basically means you'd be focusing on some other part of your behavior, or making sure to have as energy/etc. efficient an aircon as you can manage, or maybe going easier on the thing during the parts of the year that aren't "fuck you long pork, boil standing up", or donating/etc. for environmentalist projects, or a pile of other things.

It'd be problematic if they claim to be that and aren't aware of the discrepancy and trying to make up for it, but without that sort of context it's not an invalidating thing in and of itself, y'know? There's not any one thing that's necessary to call yourself concerned for the environment, just a pile of sufficient ones that can vary in adherence from person to person and situation to situation.

E: Though the strained power grid in tex isn't due to the heat, it's due to the fuckwits in charge of the infrastructure in that state not preparing for the entirely predictable heat in question. Capitalist profit fetish, probably going to kill more people this year :-\

Looking at it, well. Mostly? Looks like it's normally made from milk, which you can totally use instead of water, and using a lot more butter than I've been using to make the gravy, but the general shape of things looks about the same.

I can't recall ever tasting or seeing mornay sauce (supposedly people use it to make fancy mac and cheese, but I ain't exactly the sort of person that's ate much fancy mac and cheese in their life), so I'unno if there's a difference in practice.

If it's supposed to have the consistency of the cheese stuff on M&C there's definitely a departure in end product, though. Mornay stuff is probably soupier/smoother than what I've been making.

I still haven't, like... looked up a recipe... but I think what you're actually supposed to do is, like, make basic mashed potatoes, then lightly coat them in oil and bake/fry 'em a bit, so you have a crunchy-ish outside and a delicious potato-y inside.

I...

I did not do that.

What I did was blend them, and on seeing the resultant consistency (applesauce, except potato! Which is not, uh. Not good, ngl, perhaps extra so because as usual I didn't skin the potatoes first so it was like... brown) attempt (poorly, this did not go well) to coat vaguely ball-shaped lumps of them in flour, then add a little oil and air-fry for ~20 minutes.

I, uh. Basically made edible but otherwise remarkably shitty potato cookies. They didn't taste great, the consistency was not potato-y goodness, they looked like someone failed baking a cookie (among other things there was still entirely powdered flour on the outside of some). Was fine with ketchup or cheese gravy according to the person that ate most of it, but, like. It didn't pass any muster except the technically-not-deadly one.

For what it's worth, I definitely should have done absolutely anything in terms of prep beyond "Hey, I wonder if I can blend a potato and roll it into a ball" (the answer was yes and no, respectively), I just... didn't. Fortunately I only malappropriated one potato for the experiment, the rest turned into the sorta' poutine I mentioned somewhere up thread (that, at least, was as delicious as usual. Even parboiled the potatoes this time for extra goodness.), so, like. It wasn't too much of a loss.

but seriously, don't puree a potato without a great deal more awareness of what you're doing than i had, it will not go well, potato does not appreciate being blended

tomato gravy says no

so does mushroom gravy

onion gravy

look, just all the sorts of gravies vegans make

there's a bunch, the basics of gravy is mostly just roux (or an equivalent) + something to make it liquid-y + probably something to make it tasty

E: like, I've been using butter*, but you can use vegetable oil or whatever just as well -- you can make gravy with no meat products whatsoever. Meat drippings or whatev' is definitely the most common way to make it, but it's not a requirement, it's a very versatile way of making a sauce

*the recipe's just melted butter mixed well with some flour and water, then add a couple slices (or an equivalent amount) of (swiss, this time) cheese, nuke for like 30 seconds on high to melt the cheese, then stir and add water until consistency is acceptable and season (pepper/paprika, this time) as desired. Pretty sure I've mentioned it over in the food thread before

Public service bump:

When attempting to make potato patties, do not blend the potato. It makes a mess and does not work.

Google just be like. Cheese gravy? Do you mean cheese sauce? Do you mean <insert other food with cheese on it> and gravy? Do you mean <error, this search engine has no fucking clue what cheese gravy is nor does it grasp the general concept of gravy made from cheese>

Google has failed me, I know not how others make cheese gravy.

Still probably too early to know for sure, but yeah, what I've noticed of chatter suggests the motivation was due to the ties in question, after the moonies fleeced his mother for a great deal of her personal wealth.

And, like. Shit actually kinda' hits close to home? My grandmother has been defrauded of several thousands of dollars (probably breaking 10, but the records are spotty at this point) over the years by similar exploitation of the elderly (and they're not exactly a rich household -- relatively well off for our area, but it's an amount that would have gone a long way towards making their home more livable or providing for end-of-life care that's now being struggled with), with exactly fuckall remedy provided by legal avenues. I can viscerally understand the urge to see someone connected to the fucks that have done that to a loved one put in the dirt. Not something I'd do myself, I don't think, but, like. If that's actually what pushed the guy that far, I understand it on a very personal level.

The anger and frustration involved when someone's viciously exploiting a loved one and you can't get it to stop or otherwise receive some kind of remedy for the abuse... it's an incredibly genuine one, and one I can easily see pushing a person to kill. The hardest part of it is usually actually finding a target, and, well. Abe was public, visible, and accessible.
