General Discussion / Re: How many of you play DF

9. There is nine of us playing DF.

Edit: Just realized I might've accidentally necroed this thread. Sorry if that's the case.
... where'd you get the 9 from? A full 80 of the 87 respondents play.

I've seen discussion about it... that and the earlier thing with whosename from wherever it was -- the one they brought in to babble to congress about whatev'. The problem is the most likely thing they're violating (the Logan Act, iirc) has never actually been enforced. It's probably illegal, and arguably some degree of treason, but it's hard to make stick something that's never been attempted to get stuck.

Nope :V

All I had happen that was unusual was a (probably graphics related, as it happened during a fullscreen attempt) BSOD.

So this happened. "This" being a few dozen republican senators writing an open letter to Iran in an attempt to shit on diplomatic relations thereto. Forget if it was brought up earlier or not, but eh.

And then Iran responded. It's... kinda' beautiful, just a titch.

@ aky: I shift-delete everything I delete :P

And yeah sho, that's actually what I'm figuring has happened, but it's still something of a shock.

E: Yup, looks like some of the temp folders or whatev' have decided to walk off. Good riddance.

E2: Though can I just say that stuff like WinDirStat is just the best thing ever for hard drive space management? Having something that sorts your entire drive by space consumption is just ridiculously useful when you need to prune stuff.

No... everything actually appears to still be there. Certainly all the major size contributors I personally use are still more or less the same size I remember them being. I'm currently running windirstat to see if I can notice anything odd having happened regarding the drive's visualization, but...

E: It's faintly disturbing to have this much free space, though. I'll need to stick more stuff into the computer soon -- it's been months since I had more than 30 gigs free, and years since I had more than 50 or so. Nearly a hundred is just... it's against the natural order of frumplelian hard drives.

... between yesterday and today, sixty gigs of free space has appeared on my hard drive. I... haven't personally deleted anything during that period.

Or all of the above, so to speak. As I've been told it, 'overqualified' is generally a buzzword for either being under suspicion to jump ship as soon as it's viable (of course, if you're working with a company that's willing to avoid hiring people for being overqualified, that may be true regardless of work experience >_>), being perceived as being capable and willing to take <someone>'s job in short order (where <someone> has input in the hiring process), or, indeed, being older than they'd prefer.* Or all of those. Plus it's a good generic "screw off" -- even when a company doesn't need a reason to refuse, it's often (to them, anyway) a good idea to have one, to help cut down on negative word of mouth.

Basically, it's a likely signaler they've decided you're not a brainless schmuck, and... don't want that, for whatever reason.

*Because beyond potential medical issues, older folks are more likely to, y'know, not stand there and take it up the metaphorical (or literal, in some particularly odious cases) arse in regards to treatment and wages.

General Discussion / Re: Defining the Roguelike Genre
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:24:48 am »
I suppose I have to ask is it the character progressively getting weaker, or is it the dungeon progressively getting stronger.
Here's one where the character is specifically getting weaker as the game progresses. There's more than that one, iirc, but it's the one I remembered off the top of my head.

Quote
Still, is there any examples of Rogue-likes where the player doesn't get stronger or weaker necessarily?
Sure. Here's another one that has a lack of character advancement specifically as a feature. There's a good handful of the more puzzle-like RLs that has a static character and unchanging enemies (the difficulty coming from different arrangements rather than stronger foes), as well, and there's a fair number of ones designed to be played through quickly that don't have advancement, sometimes for neither the player or opponents.

That sort of thing is definitely a niche within the RL stuff, but it's also a definitely existent one. People like playing with character advancement (or the lack thereof), yeah.

... of course, the fun thing is there's a couple, mostly the 7drl stuff, that actually have you get progressively weaker as time goes on. There was one of the earliest RLs -- I almost want to say it was Rogue itself, but I don't quite recall -- that did something very similar to that, as well, with player progression being incapable of keeping up with monster progression and resources more or less constantly becoming more scarce. While the character was sort of progressing, it was actually constantly becoming weaker relative to the dungeon.

There's also a few (the first ADOM did this, iirc) that have a sort of curve where you get stronger to a point, and then bad things start happening and you mutate into a horrible ball of dead player or whatev'. And then there's a small few that are outright static in terms of character progression -- the tools you have to start are what you have for the whole thing.

Basically, character progression isn't always linear and isn't always forward in RLs -- most work like that, but there's definitely a few notables where that's not what's going on at all.

No, no, it's when they load you onto the hover skiff before the space wizard and charming rogue and then throw you into the slavering earlacc pit.

That is entirely dependent on how willing and capable said toddler is of taking those knives and constructing a regional eviscerator out of them :P

... more seriously, while I would generally agree with the child-rearing aspect of what you're saying, a nascent AI wouldn't really have the same sort of concerns a fleshbag spawn would. When you're dealing with something that can (and does) trivially back itself up, its current incarnation dying in a whirlyblend of serrated death is significantly less of a concern than whatever else it takes with it in the process. Mind you, the trauma it might experience in the process is of concern, but...

... there was apparently an early church belief that the entirety of the story related to jesus occurred in a non-physical portion of reality. That might not be as distanced from church tradition as you'd think, heh.
