... reeeeaaallly can't be arsed to get youtube running and subsequently investigate the importance of a random 'tube video. YT doesn't play all that well with my computer, generally. Anyone have a transcript/summation and/or confirmation of/news article about whatever point is trying to be made?

... I haven't been paying the most attention, but I'm still deeply confused as to why the US is regularly brought up in discussions regarding compromises over... whatever. I'm... pretty sure we're not heavily involved in whatever's going on over there. I mean, sure, there's been some lackluster PR stuff and some perfunctory diplomatic responses, but... that's been about it. Even the sanctions over russia invading a sovereign country have been fairly half-hearted. Why is russia trying to compromise with the US? Shouldn't it be trying to compromise with ukraine, or maybe the EU at most?

It's, just... the US is over here. Ukraine is over there. States... don't really care about ukraine. Don't really care about russia in particular, either, last I've checked -- they've had most everything they want out of russia for a long time, now, and this mess doesn't particularly seem to be changing that, insofar as I can tell. So why the odd fixation?

I get this feeling like watching someone punch someone else, and then yelling at an uninvolved passerby to give the puncher money or else. It's the weirdest sort of non-sequitur.

... you actually did, Tiru. Top of the page. You waved when blank mentioned the easterners in stripper shirts. That was definitely something construable as acknowledgement. A "Yes, I've done that" wave.

As for the role as a student. I'm not saying it's what's happening (in fact, I rather doubt it), but one of my cousins did bankroll part of their schooling as an exotic dancer. Dancing/stripping is far from an unknown part-time occupation for (college, anyway... sometimes earlier :-\) students.

Not only not a spider, but smaller than some actual banana spiders. Shameful.

You get banana spiders down here in florida. They are occasionally possessing a limb span roughly on par with a grown man's face. And like to chill between trees! Fortunately in really large, terribly obvious webs, but for those people who are moving too fast to notice there is nothing left to them but gratuitously loud vulgarity and an unconscious prayer that the reflexive cursing doesn't lead the mr. fruitachnid going into their mouth.

I witnessed that, once. Fortunately from a short distance away. Not the mouth part, but the screaming and the cursing and the flailing. It was pretty great.

E: Actually, the really interesting part is that there's, like, this specific sound adult males make when they get a face full of surprise giant bug. I'm not sure if it's cross-cultural, but it's definitely pretty close to ubiquitous in my area. Sort of a mix between a wail and a shout, I think. Along those lines.

Yeah, more institutional misuse than individual misuse -- using a thing to solve one problem (it works!) without awareness or understanding that it was causing another (it works... among other things). That's the basic problem with riding on experimental results without understanding the processes involved. Is why "it works" isn't sufficient justification. It's necessary justification, but not sufficient. The sufficient part includes things like "Isn't going to turn patient's future offspring into goo."

It's all medical (or sociological, or whatever) miracles until you or your partner gives birth to a sentient slime. Then it is also medical miracles, but of a considerably different sort.

Is it worth leaving more neutered enemy systems rather than taking them to keep air progress low?
Um, yes? Very? That... that's a fundamental part of AIP management in AI War. The only way you can manage to be indiscriminate in your system acquisition is, maybe, if you're going for a spire game. Any other situation (and probably that one, too) the AIP is just going to get entirely out of hand and you start getting hammered with 10k+ waves you can't really do anything about.

Otherwise if you're going for victory you really need to be getting as few systems as possible and neutering systems/sneaking through transports to snipe off prime objectives and whatnot. If you're just yoinking up every system you can get your hands on, you're aiming for a fun time but the chances of winning the game are very small...

... I keep forgetting sundays are happening until it's nightfall. Maybe after I notice a sale for the latest expansion...

Um, because long term or unidentified side effects (especially in regards to niche cases, like certain portions of the population with particular genetic oddities, and suchlike) are a thing? When something works, but you don't know why, it's entirely possible (and, from what I understand historically, incredibly likely) you're getting a lot more than just "what works". Which is why one should be leery of poorly understood processes, even if they're currently functioning.

Hell, wasn't misuse of aspirin killing and/or strongly increasing likelihood of death/complication for a while? It was working, but, y'know, doing other stuff. And people kicked it because of that.

Mind you, in that case, it's barely arguable that it wasn't worth it anyway, but... reason for concern, yes.

Interesting to know.

... I was more wondering about actual stuff, though. Any interesting inventions, methodology improvements, etc., etc. Is there any field in the modern age where you actually go to russia to be on the bleeding edge of things? What about the slightly bruised edge?

E: Basically, is that 24 billion actually doing anything for the joint?

Hnnn... wet coughs at least take much longer before they feel like someone is taking a serrated knife to your throat every time they come out. Both pretty nasty, but yeah, I'd give the advantage to the ones that got gunk coming with them.

They hurt less.

I agree, if Ukraine becoming pro-west didn't harm Russia, the USA wouldn't even acknowledge its existence, for the most part. But we all know that Pentagon loves to do the whole "regime change via rebels" extravaganza in order to weaken its enemies[...]
Ookkaaay. The thing you seemed to have missed is that the states mostly stopped caring about harming russia before you were born. Not too long after the USSR collapsed, most of that region stopped being of substantial interest to the US.

It's, like. No russia, I'm sorry, we've broken up. You're not the hatebro anymore. I realize this hurts your ego, but. It is what it is. It's cute you're trying to stoke the fires of ragelust once more, but... your fire is small and dim, now. Not really any tinder left, there. Come back when you're geopolitically relevant again instead of flailing ineffectually.

Something like that, anyway.

E: Though I guess that's all kinda' offtopic. What's the R&D situation like in Russia these days? Any notable gains in any industries?

Dunno about others, but t'me it would mostly be the thought that the US actually gave two blue shits about ukraine before russia shoved its dong into it.

Actually, I don't think the states really care about it after the russodonging, either, to be honest. Middle east et al stuff actually has geopolitical happenings the US thinks matters nowadays. Russia and russia related areas mostly stopped being that several decades ago.

There's something intensely recursive (?) about the thought of pushing existential metaphysics in a scenario like that.

Basically why paint in the air or have little screens when you can paint colors directly onto the subject's retina? The retina is the ultimate screen, pixel resolution doesn't get any better than that.
N...nooo, I think we can actually get better resolution than that. Eyeball is machine, we can (conceptually, if not currently) make something more fine.

It's just. It wouldn't do us much good, personally. Which I guess if you mean better by that metric sure but.

Think the sentiment goes something along the lines of, "At least you consider it important enough to fuck up." Implication being you're a terrible person for considering the subject not even worthy of notice... better to care and do ill than not care at all, et al. At least you think the issue matters. Better than both to care and do well, but *shrugs*

In relation to the geopolitical actions of one's nation, it's not an entirely unfounded sentiment. Apathy has almost certainly done more damage to the political landscape world round over the years than malignant self interest, after all...

Don't entirely agree, myself, but I see the sentiment fairly often and I don't entirely disagree, either. Not the full truth, but perhaps part of it.

“When there are potatoes, it’s a good day,” she says. “When there are no potatoes, it’s a bad day.”
Somehow, I can totally picture you saying that Frumple.
Is good saying, really. I don't entirely base my day to day happiness on potatoes, but that might change if I didn't have casual access to them. They're a... how's it go, hygiene need, something like that. Possession of potatoes does not bring happiness, but lack of them brings unhappiness.

E: Actually, possession of potatoes does bring happiness. They're just neither a necessary nor sufficient cause for a good day. Not being able to get them if desired is arguably a sufficient (if not necessary) cause for a bad day, though.
