Maybe they were just trying to be charitable? I've met many people that hold that apathy is worse than malice.

General Discussion / Re: Retro Gaming - Gotta Collect 'Em All!
« on: November 17, 2014, 11:32:32 am »
Collection stuff is probably fine here in GD, so long as the focus is on that instead of the games themselves.

Me, I don't have much interest in the physical memorabilia -- I've got an old NES/SNES/PSX/etc. laying around somewhere and a fair handful of games, but these days I'd rather find an adapter for the old controllers and plug 'em into a computer than play on the actual system, heh. Emulation has spoiled me :P

Incidentally, did you know a compressed archive of the entirety of the NES lineup, all sixteen hundred or so of them, is only a bit under 200 megs? Might even be able to get smaller with better compression. It's pretty crazy.

Seconding the thrift stores, though. I've managed to pick up some fairly good stuff from those on the cheap, over the years. It's a decade or so past the point you're likely to find good console games, but you still get some odd PC games or console hardware laying about.

Dream brain did it again. Today, the most amazing of things was watching the inestimable Ogre Summoning Spell in action.

The ogre summoning spell consists of grabbing a creature smaller than you and throwing it over a building. Hope that witch had featherfall >_>

I meant the shades of brown. Like sorrel, bay and buckskin. Because those are distinctions that have to be made.
... my statement stands. When people are making up ridiculous words, the only equitable option is to return the favor. The horse is cat colored.

There are too many names for brown horses.
Call it Cat and be done with it. Or maybe Hay.

Or It. Gender non-specific pronouns are always a good animal name. One of my favorite pets was named You. Wrong species names are good ones, though, especially when it's a non-herbivore. Sometimes even then. You are what you eat, as they say.

... all I can really do, I guess, is praise zeus I never felt more than light and quickly passing urges to be part of a social circle. Nearly being killed by social-related stuff once or twice when I was a pre-teen apparently helped nip that nonsense in the bud. I don't cringe too much looking back at my old stuff. It's... mostly the same as my new stuff. Just a bit less refined, I guess.

---

As for wtf, my recent noticing that SC2's arcade stuff went free led me to see about giving it a shot, see if things run,* etc. Which has led to boggling at the first more-or-less current-gen AAA title I've downloaded in quite a few years. Because, you see. It has this thing, where you can start playing before the full download finishes. Which is neat! Except. Well.

It hit "optimal" somewhere between 2 and 3 gigs... out of a 15 gig download. And it runs pretty well at that point. So there's ~3 gigs of game and... 12 gigs of something else. What the hell is going on with this thing? I mean, I realize it's probably graphics/sound related stuff, but. Really? 1:4 ratio of game to other?

*It does! Much better than I expected it to. Which is to say at all. Solo'd to wave 25 or so in rage TD before it became unplayably chuggy! And then I played another five or six waves before giving up.

... if there's no easy way to check which is better, I'd imagine they're roughly as good. Just flip coin or something. Better functioning and simple than functioning optimally and chewing up resources with unnecessary code. Good enough is good enough, and 90+% of the time performance is more desirable than perfection.

... on one hand, oppression bad, etc., etc.

On the other hand, part of me can't help but think that a heavily christian influenced china -- especially of the sort that's apparently gaining traction there the fastest -- is among some of the worst possible outcomes we could see. We seriously don't need one of the largest and fastest growing populations in the world joining the sort that actively believes the end of the world is coming and therefore fuck the future. That would quite possibly end up a self-fulfilling prophecy :-\

Not saying China's powers that be are going about it in the right way, but...

Kinda' conflicted on the topic, I am.

We could stand more competitive sports played with golf clubs and frisbees, honestly. Also mandatory post-score back flips, otherwise it doesn't count.

No comment on whether the golf clubs are intended to hit the frisbees or not, though. Maybe a little bit of all of the above.

Actual reason given was that C's mother had doctory stuff and, being a psychotic nutcase, decided to haul C along instead of some other option.

When I've heard the name, it's pronounced like "Canoe" with a T on the end. Kah-noot.
... canadian can nutting sounds intensely painful. Let's... let's not go there.

I looked up Macbeth, which led me to the guy who he was based on, which led me to... this.

That name. That goddamn name. What the hell?
Almond joy has cnuts? Mounds... waaaiit. No, I think that's a good stopping point. Nuts to that.

...

There's not really a way to refer to that name in english that doesn't get come off as innuendo, is there?

Mumble? Yes, mumble. warrior_brawler = true added to allow_build.profile. Should be somewhere in the folder tome cooks up in your user stuff. Probably the offline folder, maybe the online, i'unno. Been a while since I paid attention.

Speaking of which, if someone wants the larger thing,
Spoiler: here (click to show/hide)
Though that's missing the ashes race. Which would appear to be either just doomelf = true or race_doomelf = true... one of the two. Probably the latter.

... to be something approaching fair, a couple of my relatives, first cousins to one another, did marry each other. Three kids. No major problems that I heard of.

So it's. Still a thing, or something. Probably more of that in the history further back, but these folks are still, y'know, alive and kicking.
