General Discussion / Re: Christian beliefs and discussion

And I feel a wave of persecution is about to hit the US
This is hilariously unlikely. I realize that a lot of the rhetoric coming out of some sources say it's coming, but there is a noted supermajority of christian adherents in the US -- and they're overrepresented in political positions. The chances of actual persecution, especially anything systemic or wide spread, is so close to zero it might as well be nonexistent. It'll take at least two or three more generations before something like that becomes even the faintest of possibilities.

That doesn't necessarily mean that state-side churches might not be reigned in a bit, but they've been kinda' rampant for a while and could probably stand it. Treatment coming more in line with everyone else definitely isn't persecution.

That's... probably a pricklier topic than it should be, grak. A fair number of the religious institutions in the US have a very different interpretation of "persecution" than... well, what's probably sane. I wish there was a nicer way of putting that, but I can't really think of one :-\

And the public dialectic such groups put out regarding the subject is kinda' toxic. We're talking cries of persecution for stuff like having to pay equitable taxes or follow constitutional law, iirc.

And unsurprised works just fine, I think.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That... is a terrible lie. Most of the books I've read have had punctuation. And stuff like page numbers. Sometimes even accents. Definitely more than just 26 symbols, is what I'm saying.

E: Though I guess it's fitting none of the respondents in that picture actually used punctuation.

To be fair, it's mostly a name/claimed acestory thing. Christians generally worship a sort of "The YWHW Formerly Known as YWHW" (which, y'know, isn't really YWHW YWHW, because there's this weird triple-threat thing going on), Jews worship YWHW who isn't "The YWHW/Allah Formerly Known as YWHW", and Islam's doing its own "Allah Formerly Known as YWHW" thing (Or, I guess, more of an "Allah, the Actual Name of YWHW" thing. I've forgotten the particulars, there). The statement that they're the same god is more of a PR/proselytizing/attempt-to-theologically-1up move than anything that's substantially true.

Japanese canoodledoodles have taught me all kinds of things.

Usually the writing in anything is terrible. Wozzname's observation is in effect, yes.

@ Dutch, yeah, it is. It's... well, it's probably skirting the ToS a bit, but there's roughly three sorts. The animated stuff, single image things, and doujin-type thingjiggers. Short-stories (and not-so-short stories, too) and whatnot. To be fair, you do watch the first, and look at the second, but the third is firmly in the realm of raunchy (illustrated) literature. Given that kevak noted the material was read, it was some variation of the third. Or a mis-categorized lemon.

... what? No. You read hentai. You read manga. You read comic books. There is text. Usually. These are things that are read.

Both works, yeah. It's... a pretty amazing thing, actually, if you're into quiet. There's some synergy involved. It's pretty great.

We could always celebrate a holiday for everyone. For atheists, we can make up a holiday. There are no problems with this, right?
More or less. No one really has a problem with a period for solstice shindigs of whatever sort. That's actually kinda' the point with attempts to rebrand the solstice celebrations to something simple, like "Winter Holidays". Anyone can celebrate whatever during the winter holidays -- it's an inclusive term. When you actually have a specific, religion (or even cultural, really) based term for it, you're implicitly separating (and making abnormal) people who celebrate something else. Linguistic entrenchment of outgroup identification, or something along those lines. When... we could stand not to do that, y'know?

Actually, I could definitely see a situation where guardians from a separate species would get vaguely confused about human mating patterns and try to hook up their dependent prince with the wrong gender (depending on said prince's preference, of course). And if there were divergent psychological patterns as well... it'd be kinda' like an ent not really "getting" hobbit reproductive patterns and trying to get samwise and frodo to produce offspring. It could take, like. A couple centuries for the parent-critter to figure out something was off.

Ear Muffs or Ear Protection is what I generally hear, they're interchangeable as far as I'm concerned (although if you have two types (like, say, in-ear foam blockers as well) and just say "Get me some ear protection" then there could be confusion there, it's kind of a higher-level term)
Ah, the actual goes-into-ear stuff does have a different name. At least around here. Ear plugs. Since that's what they do. You actually have reusable ones, as well as ones for swimming instead of sound blocking.

Love is an Open door at least makes sense from a character perspective.

A bit of a Fixer Upper though? What do ALL the trolls want to see him get hitched?
Caveat: I haven't actually seen Frozen. Probably won't. I have no idea what the words you said in that quote mean. I mean... I know what the words are. And they're strung together in a vaguely coherent mass. But the context and collective meaning is completely opaque to me.

E: Though, uh. When you say trolls, do you mean internet trolls or, like. Bridge toll collectors? Were there trolls in frozen? Did they have homosexual shipping inclinations?

Someone proposed to me that if Frozen was about two princes it would be a much more original movie...

and I am trying to think of a single movie where the characters were saved through the power of brotherly love and where none of the male characters solved their problems through violence.
I'm... not sure they were talking about brotherly love? Unless they were also talking about incest? I'm... I'm sure there's some anime or another that did something like that. Probably.

Earmuff is indeed a word. I don't think it's actually the word used for gun-range level hearing protection (I've got a set myself, for similar circumstances, and they're among the most blissful monetary investments I've ever made), but it's a word. It usually is used to describe those... ear warmer things. Basically the same construction, but more for heat retention and wind protection than sound muffling. They tend to be fuzzy and colorful.
