... Isn't that how you're supposed to eat a baked potato?
You'd think, but I'm the only one in this area I've actually seen doing that. Usually they just kinda' cut it open -- not in half, just... open -- and kinda' mash up part of the inside and then stick stuff on it. Which leaves most of the potato untouched. And then they spend forever making what amounts to impromptu mashed potatoes inside a potato skin and frumple just gets sad.

Heh. I heard recently that our recommended salt intake is actually just as bad for our health as overindulging in salt. The apparent recommended amount should be, like, 2.5 grams a day or so, in terms of sodium.
Last time I paid attention, undershooting too much is actually somewhat worse than overindulging. Low sodium intake is apparently also pretty damn bad for you.

Know a lot of popular dietary stuff rides aiming for low salt really hard, though. Personally, I just try not to go too wild and... ignore most of that. I might listen to a well practiced dietitian, but recommended everything has fluctuated too damn much in my lifetime to give much of it any particular credence. Maybe another decade or two and some goddamn stability in recommendation, preferably coupled with a decoupling of dietary practices from modern media and advertising, and I'd be more willing to listen.

You have to admit though, Gnorm. You aren't exactly in the majority when it comes to youth...
To be fair, the emotional abuse inherent in a lot of the fire and brimstone stuff (you are bad and should feel bad, do what I say or be punished, etc., etc.) is a pretty good way to fuck over confused young people in such a way they become dependent on the structure abusing them. It's probably not the worst way to increase attendance, insofar as means of increasing the numbers go.

It's just kinda' scummy as fuck and trends toward screwing people over pretty badly, but hey, whatever gets the donations rolling in.

It'd be nice if the whole church of christ became less hateful instead of more, over time, though. Bit nice. Maybe a little.

High salt intake is linked to a number of illnesses, including heart disease and stomach cancers. Most people eat way over the recommended intake already, so basically it's not a good idea to create food that's any higher in salt than what we have now. So yeah, we want salt-tolerant crops, but in a way that separates the salty part from the edible part.
I doubt that's an actual problem in the areas this stuff is initially intended to target. Push comes to shove, just... reduce salt intake elsewhere, not that low sodium is particularly good for us, either. I'd rather see 'em get it working before worrying about stuff that might kill people decades from now (as opposed to starvation and whatnot, which will kill them shortly).

And @Siru, good, good. You're on the right path. If you really want fixin's for finger-food style baked potatoes, chop it in half and the use a knife to cut little irrigation paths into each half, then dribble whatever you're adding into the tiny canals. Inundates the potato with flavor and still lets you forgo the fork.

... you can let them cool a little, yes. Slicing in half and then eating the halves individually also make things easier, but it's not really necessary. It doesn't actually take very long before it's in non-scalding edible territory if it's not wrapped in tinfoil or whatever.

Fork, though... no. Too much effort, and entirely too inefficient. Just eat the thing, skin and all. Nothing left. Potatoes are finger food. Except the mashed ones, I guess. And they can be too, if you cook 'em right -- there's these awesome little... things... where you sorta' bake the outside so you have the delicious mashed core surrounded by tasty browned containment. Still need to get around to figuring out how to cook 'em, but they're really good. Also impeccable finger food.

E: Though I guess using a fork to section off bits and then spear those is okay. That silly scoop out the center stuff is just... no. I've never actually seen someone manage to eat the entire potato doing that. There's always so much left ;_;

How American culture has convinced people that's the right way to eat a baked potato in the face of it being one of the worst ways to eat a baked potato I will never know. The day I first picked up a baked potato and just ate it was the day I achieved a portion of enlightenment.

I thought everyone salted their potatoes?
... no? I mean, I usually dribble a bit of soy sauce into a baked potato (but bugger plain salt with a rusty cactus -- bullion or soy or something. Not just salt.), but m'perfectly content to just eat the ruddy thing, too. Clean it, cook it, eat it. No, no forks. No spoons. Use your hands. No butter, no salt. No whatever. Don't peel the damned thing, the skin's the best part. Eat the friggin' potato.

Oh yeah, there's definitely the whole "we must become teh powerfuls" line of thought. I merely see that as wrong and mildly hypocritical - and I will condemn any Christian church whose primary motivation is political power.

...
Oh, to a certain extent it's not even that. That churches require secular power -- via adherents, and the material resources they represent -- is a simple fact. The denomination that is going to continue to exist without material support is, well. Isn't. And ad-hoc, grass root sort of stuff... doesn't really happen -- spontaneously maintaining doctrinal cohesion without administrative support, so to speak, is basically impossible. Similarly, you need people to print and distribute holy text (bibles) and whatnot, as well as support a class of individuals who are dedicated to establishing and spreading the cult's theological base -- oral tradition really isn't going to last very long, in the grand scheme of things (especially in the face of other options for cultural transmission), and most folks just really don't have the time to maintain a sustainable memetic spread.

The other option is either extinction or extreme mutation (and even with the major material resources that organized religions have had to bear, the latter has happened to a fair degree). Basically, a church is going to act largely the same regardless of their underlying goal -- the one that doesn't act like "we must become teh powerfuls" is simply going to die. Even if that's not really (well, ostensibly, anyway) the point.

Of course, you could say that if avoiding that sort of thing is going to cause them to die, then they should die, but...

So I've got a question

Would there be a whole "Isaac Assimove's" rule for the 10 commandments
By the infinite emissions of donkeys, it's Asimov.

... regardless, the commandment says "honor", not "listen to". Different things. You definitely wouldn't be honoring your parents if you assisted them in committing sin.

E: Beyond that, the general interpretation seems to be that the obedience aspect is only active when they give lawful (and/or reasonable) commands. So the commandment isn't a blank check to the parents.

I was a bit young at the time to really understand the implications, but looking back I would say that it's very silly to turn a sermon into a sodding theme park to attract more customers.

In other words, I disapprove of trying to make church more attractive or whatever.
Silly except... not? I mean, from a theological/spiritual point of view, definitely. But from an organizational point of view... mostly not?

There's a certain (fairly large, really) extent to which the only thing the church(es) actually care about is secular power -- donations, political influence, etc. For that, they need adherents -- folks to show up in church, support the church's approved political figures, donate cash money equivalents to keep building/maintaining facilities, etc., so forth, so on.

It's fairly well known and noticed through the organizational history of the various churches for them to pander, so to speak, to acquire more vespene gas secular power (because, unlike an actual divinely supported organization, they need secular power to continue to function). Continuing to do so in the face of new challenges is... par the course, methinks.

Can say I hope the salt potatoes work out. Frumple loves potatoes, and more potatoes is always a good thing.

... yeah, if you're the single income (especially a fast food worker income) for a five person home, and they're spending money on fast food and shit like DVDs (especially in the face of, y'know, internet or the goddamn library -- the latter often has various non-print media on the shelves, these days.)... you kinda' need to put your foot down and start enforcing some fiscal responsibility.

Like, at that point, it's not even a want. You need to, because you're doing neither yourself nor your fellow house members any favors by allowing that sort of gross financial irresponsibility. You'd think they'd fucking know about that sort of thing considering you seem to have implied everyone else in the building is your age or older, but I guess some people just... yeah.

I'd definitely be keeping a tab on local rent rates and utility costs and whatnot, though. Make sure you have a backup plan ready and available for if they do lose their mind and try to evict you.

Though to the latest post: If it's jointly owned, consider renegotiating with the landlord for single ownership? If you're actually the only one paying for it, it's likely you could swing that. Then if your fellow tenants kick up a fuss, you can call up the law and have them shipped out.

Something like half the time english is more exception than rule.

I... don't remember french grammar being that bad. More sensible than english, anyway. About the least coherent bit was the gendering silliness, but other than that... fairly straightforward, as grammar goes, iirc.

Nah, like most of its ilk, professional football is what America expresses its manlust towards. Sorta' like wrestling, just more clothes. It's not really a dick measuring contest so much as a ritualized posing pouch for the masses.
