General Discussion / Re: Christian beliefs and homosexuality

So far as I can see, that's not something that's actually happened.
Yeah, unless things really do go sideways. 20th century actually had dead on the same number of lunar eclipses the 21st has/will have. S'not really anything unusual going on in regards to frequency.

As for them occurring on the days of the feasts, as noted, it's happened like that a full eight times since 1st century AD. Nothing came of it, insofar as we can tell. Arguably worse for this particular apocalypse scare, three out of the four eclipses in the coming tetrad won't be visible from Israel.

Haven't we had many blood moons already, though?
Ho yez. There's actually been 62 of the sort apparently supposed to be a sign (four within two years) since 1st century AD, eight of which fell in the appropriate time frame.

It's... I realize it's a sort of sideways swipe at you, Cryx, so do take it as no offense, but there's parts of the christian faith that have believed the end of times is rapidly approaching -- with all the appropriate prophetory bells and whistles -- since the religion began. It's an estachological religion *shrugs vaguely*

General Discussion / Re: ♪ The Great Music Thread ♫

I actually think I've mentioned it before, but since there's been an actual OST release, well... Magicmaker's OST has gone up for purchase. S'actually the first piece of raw music I've bought in years.

A representative example of Nick Paavo's work. You can actually get earlier versions of most of it by downloading the alpha (/demo) and nabbing the .oggs from the sound assets, but, well...

S'also a promo code going (until the 22nd) on the website, if anyone's interested in getting the OST itself instead of just checking the nice music online, heh. Though a teench repetitive. Still...

E: I have no idea what the hell this is, but I like it.

Jeez, near year necro. Well, that's okay. Don't... really feel like making and moderating a new thread, but there's news to be had!

Namely the game hits steam on the 22nd.

I'd also like to point out the OST is available for purchase, if you don't feel like nabbing the .oggs out of the alpha version. I really can't recommend it enough, actually -- their composer is kinda' incredible.

I don't believe God is omnibenevolent. In Romans 9 IIRC, he basically says he doesn't love everyone.
Yeah, that's a tract you can take. Seriously undermines any justification for following the religion, though, t'me. Why place absolute faith in something that is not absolutely good?

Conceptually, but it would also be possible for such a god to explain it in a way that we can understand why the act should be avoided. And said critter would kinda' be necessitated to do so, if it's omnibenevolent.

Unless, of course, you consider god's morality to be different from man's, which is a hell of a can of worms that, t'me, completely strips man of any reason to give any weight to the morality of god. So better for the good of god to be the good of man, and vice versa.

So they're like God's arbitrary pet hates?

I don't understand what you mean, can you re word that please? Or explain it a bit
Sorry
Leaf's playing the old "Is it good because god wills it or does god will it because it's good" spiel (which goes back at least as far as Plato, yes). If there's no reason beyond god's preference, then it's an arbitrary restriction -- there's no reason for it beyond the divine's preference. Calling it a pet hate is as fair a labeling as any, at least when it's a restriction on action (such as "No mixed cloths" or whathaveyou).

Of course, if there is reason beyond the divine's preference...

Well, the outside asks, rightly, why God's preferences matter -- if there is a fundamental principle the divine uses as axioms for their decrees, why not just cut out the proverbial intermediary?

It's the aside, but I've always seen it sorta' as God's ultimate trick question. The only reason to do good in the name of God instead of just doing good, at least insofar as I'm aware, is salvation. And therein lies the trap, because if you seek to do good for selfish reasons (the salvation of your soul), then you taint that good. Quite possibly to the point of denying you salvation, heh -- bible has a number of warnings about practicing faith for the better of the self (There's a bit of matthews on the subject -- 6:1-34, iirc -- as an example). Of course, you could say that you seek to do good in the name of God in order to save the souls of others, but then you're implicitly saying that God is such a being that it will punish mankind for good acts... which is definitely a good bit of blasphemy re: the whole omnibenevolence bit, imo.

Also, Fumple: Understanding what constitutes a sin is an important part of trying not to do it.
I'll note again, though: Insofar as I'm aware, the point of christianity is not to avoid sin, but to act as Christ acted -- to walk with Jesus. The avoidance of sin is not a goal, but a consequence. One that can arguably not be achieved if your goal is divergent from pursuing the path of christhood. You cannot avoid sin by trying to avoid sin, only by doing as Christ would. The avoidance of sin comes naturally from that.

Of course, just because someone has committed a sin doesn't mean they don't deserve respect.
The concept of sin in general is honestly so ridiculously vague it's almost not worth consideration as a concept, imo. I'm pretty sure it would be accurate to call the evaluation of an act as a sin, itself, a sin. Deigning to step in the place of god and judge the actions of others for merit only truly recognizable by the divine would definitely be stepping away from faith in the creator, quiaff? Place of man is not to judge but to walk as christ walked, et al.

Naaah. Self-cloning and mind-networking. That way you can sleep, work, and play PbP D&D at the same time. On different sides of the planet. While participating in a county wide orgy, running for president, and exploring the stars. And whatever else it is you want to do -- there'll be plenty of you to go around!

Throw in some digitalized selves into the mix as well, of course. Nothing says a happy day like being your own personal AI assistant and Shodan.

Yeah, but again, not really heard of a MAN who's had one. Women, yes, with alarming frequency, but not men.

Should have expected it eventually, but I just... didn't. Especially not from something so trivial.
Yeaaah... it's been part of the Standard Stream of Shit Talk since like the mid nineties at the latest. Earlier, really, depending on how you look at it -- that sort of thing has been part of demoralization efforts since freaking pre-history, nevermind the internet era.

Completely drawing a blank on why Oracle was/is important. Know I know the name, but blazes if I can recall why. And the wikipedia article was oddly unhelpful.

I love that one of the news headlines regarding the switch is "Oracle CEO Ellison Steps Aside; Earnings, Revenues Wander Away Too," though.

Silly RK, this is scotland, not new zealand. If anyone's going to immolate someone's loved one, it's going to be a brit set on fire, not their sheep.

... actually, it would be rather nice if no one and nothing animate got set on fire. Also no corpses. Maybe some flags, a bonfire or two, stuff like that. No people, pets, or once-living remains thereof. Or at least go burn down the english parliament or whathaveyou.

Don't think I have access to a 32bit system to check, but everything I'm seeing in the program seems to suggest it'll run on a 32bit machine. I'm running on an apparently 64x vista machine, for what that's worth.

E: Satan, huh. Quartet of troll faces in a box propelled around by a swastika formation of engines. Okay, then.

... it's actually pretty brutal in its own weight class. Loses on point count, but tends to blow its opponents to bits before they can chew through the troll face outer layer to the delicious dakkabits on the inside.

E2: Actually, I'm noticing "huge mass of blocks surrounding a center of offense" is almost farcically effective. Ends up being effectively impossible to combat kill. Gets silly when they run into something they can't catch (it's amusing to watch a ship lose a match in perfect condition, but several thousand points down), but woe and behold anything that they can.
